Capítulo 10: Chapter 9

I started with all sorts of old amulets, witch's pouches, various rare ingredients for spells and rituals. I pulled everything I could get my hands on.

But now I was holding one of the items for which all this was started, and that was the Word of God, the Leviathan Tablet. I dragged it between hunts for a month in Iran.

There are two left, so it's not necessary for me, I would demon tablet get, what to do to close forever Hell Gate, I remember, but maybe there is a difference. Plus there's a spell to say after each test, but I don't know it. And I can't find it out, no prophet at hand, and I don't want to open it, let the keeper of the word live in peace, for now.

A couple of days after I went hunting, Bobby called me and told me that Ash had found a new God.

It turned out to be an interesting case, if only because the hunt was on me.

Found the heathen in an abandoned warehouse of a long-dormant factory.

- You made it, God-killer. - There are a lot of empty buildings in America, I thought, maybe it's a feature of the world? So there's room for monsters to do their darkest things. - You killed a lot of our brothers. - Fifteen Gods from different pantheons isn't much, my thoughts turned sideways again. - I am the fertility god of the Aztec panthe...

- I don't give a shit. - I interrupted his pompous tirade. - I'll swat you like a cockroach and go on my way.

- You think you can get away with it. - He said in an arrogant voice. - Don't get your hopes up, we've been expecting you. - And he clapped his hands together. Immediately, monsters came out of the woodwork. Hmm, that's new. I couldn't feel them till last, they were hiding somehow, and what's worse, I didn't know how.

- So, what have we here? - I asked aloud, blinking my Nephilim gaze for a second. - Four gods, two dozen vampires, one and a half werewolves, nine weak demons, and even a couple of kitsune. - I've seen the last of them for the first time, not a big deal.

- You're strong, but what do you say now? Not even you can handle them all. - If you knew my real strength, you'd crawl up the ass of the world and not show your face.

- You really are like cockroaches. Are we gonna start figuring out who's got the longer blade or what? - where's my most bloodthirsty grin.

I trained in front of a mirror for a reason, I thought, when a couple of pale vampires turned even more pale.

And here we go.

***

Half an hour before... Roadhouse Bar.

- Looking for gods for Adam? - Ellen asked.

- Yeah. - Ash agreed without taking his eyes off his laptop. - I think we have a problem. - He got very serious.

- What is it? - Bobby got up.

- Two days ago I tracked down a god for Adam, you know. Yesterday a couple of hunter parties got together to go after the big packs in Chicago, and they report the monsters huddled up and took off in an unknown direction. Maybe they smelled something, whatever, I didn't pay attention. It's happened more than once, they'll pop up somewhere. - Ash was distracted for a second. - But on the outskirts of Chicago, where Adam hunts, there were signs of a few more Gods, I don't know exactly how many, and a large group of demons. I think they're setting a trap for him.

- We need to warn him. - Ellen ran to the phone. - Damn it, I can't get ahold of the caller.

- He's not a weak guy, so I don't think he'd be in any real danger, he'd run away at most. - Bobby tried to reassure everyone and himself included.

- Bobby! - Ellen snarled.

- There's supposed to be Johnson's boys and Glenn and his party over there, they can help," the ex-hunter changed his mind as he dialed the number to make the call. That's what a life-giving kick from the wife does.

- What's up? - Ash asked after five minutes.

- A dozen hunters are on their way. - There was a edge of tension in his voice.

- Not nearly enough to get them caught, there's at least fifty monsters out there. - Ash said without taking his eyes off the computer.

- Now we just have to wait. - Ellen said wistfully, remembering that once she had to wait for her late husband in the same way. She wouldn't admit it to anyone, of course, but even though Adam wasn't human, he was almost like a son to her. He'd also helped her and Bobby have some family happiness.

Forty minutes later, on the outskirts of Chicago.

Several cars pulled up to the old warehouse. Men armed to the teeth jumped out of them. Wasting no time in talking, they moved at once toward the building from which strange noises were coming.

And while some of the shouting, growling, and shrieking was understandable, the occasional peal of thunder and crackling sound like lightning was something new.

The hunters glanced at each other and quickened their pace. What they saw when they entered the building made them feel inferior as hunters.

It was all about the guy they almost all knew personally and who they were rushing to help.

On the floor already lay a dozen or three corpses of different creatures, most of them headless but some in scorch marks as from electrocution. Why how? Another shout from Adam in an unfamiliar language, followed by a flash of lightning, a faint peal of thunder, and the next body falling to the floor. The monsters had almost surrounded the young hunter, but there was another shout, and it sent a wave that scattered the enemies like skittles.

- Hey people, stop standing on the sidelines, don't be shy, there's enough for everyone. - he shouted, taking them out of their stupor. - Dibs on the heathens!" And he dashed off toward the four gods standing alone.

The hunters didn't wait any longer, so they covered each other's backs as they set off toward the monsters. Shots rang out, words of an exorcism spell were heard. And the evil creatures swarmed on the new enemy. Just half a minute and all the demons were sent back to hell.

The rest of the werewolves took a silver bullet to the heart, or more accurately, not just the heart.

There was a joke to be made about their inner world being richer, silver after all.

And the vampires were stripped of their heads and everything else they could think of as superfluous to the hunters. Enemies were gone. And while the older hunters kept their guard up, one young lad made a mistake that almost cost him his life. He moved a few meters away from the others. One of the vampires, lying on the floor, nearly hacked in two by Adam's sword, jumped up and attacked the boy. None of the hunters had time to react.

- Dis. - A quiet voice, and the vampire who was already reaching for the boy's neck is swept aside. - Careful, new guy? - The frightened, pale boy nodded, unconscious. - Weak! - Adam gave his verdict. He had already dealt with one of the Gods, and the others were gone. The vampire hissed again.

- Finish that poor man off, and don't forget the vampire. - He joked.

A couple of hunters dashed off to finish the bloodsucker off, while the rest began to make sense of the mess they'd made.

The soul of the murdered goddess could not be absorbed, and it was a pity, he was relatively strong. But I liked the hunt, first of all, because it gave me an opportunity to practice my magic. Of course I could crush everyone with my bare power, but there would come a time when it might not be enough. And I don't want to be helpless. You always have to have options. I've sustained several wounds in this battle. No harm other than ruined clothes, but it makes you think.

Without going into too much detail, Bobby sent some hunters to help me because Ash had figured out the trap. These guys rushed to my rescue, for which I am very grateful. I was. Till they told me when I woke up I'd be charged for saving the carcass.

Bastards, they screwed me over and they want to drink at my expense. And I got an idea, and I think Ellen can help me.

- Adam, I'm glad you're okay. Bobby and I were worried sick. - She said when I got to her bar.

- Hey Ash, tell me friend, how did this happen? Where did so many lifeguards come from? - I already know all that, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

- I figured they set a trap for you. You got the pagans pretty bad. Bobby called some people he knew, and that's how it happened. - You're a goddamn pussy.

- I owe you one, but where's Mr. Bitchy himself, by the way? - and we both know who I'm talking about.

- The Winchesters were in a car accident a couple days ago. John died in the hospital yesterday. Dean barely made it. Bobby's in his room with the boys. Tell you a secret, there's a hell of a thing going on around them, and it's connected to a powerful demon I never heard of.

Well, I've heard, so it's started. And I missed the big moment.

- Ellen, come here, please," I called out to her.

- What do you want, little man? Hurry up, I got a bunch of customers, and they don't like to wait.

- I got it. - So here's a couple of simple spells to pass out to the hunters, let them learn if they want to, of course. You've all seen what they can do.

- What are these? - She pointed to the jars.

- Holy oil, the weakness of angels, and yes, they do exist. - I didn't let her get a word in edgewise. - If you hold the glasses over the holy fire, you can see the hellhounds, the guys will come in handy. - I mean, they got penny eyes, I like that reaction.

- Holy shit. - Well, finally, even Ash got a kick out of it.

- Oh, and lastly," he snapped his fingers again, "here's a hundred knives to kill everything from demons to angels. Hand them out to the most reliable guys, and I'm out of here.

And I'm out of here.
