Despite how late I have been staying in office the past couple of days, the work pile never seemed to end.
Of course I was to be blamed for it as I was looking at financial records to wrap up the year and prepare for the next quarter. Those were never a simple sign and mail out file, these were pages upon pages of reports from each division from the various capital I owned.
The only thing getting me through my days was my texts to Celeste. I am not much of a texting guy but it became a great outlet for me to connect with her. I liked showing my daily life kind of like a journal but someone was responding.
It also made us dating feel all the more real and more normal. I did not have to worry about whether someone will catch us in public or something, I could just text her and then work until she replied back.
"Sir here are the next set of files." My secretary came in and took the completed file stack I made so he could make a copy and file away the originals. It was like clockwork, he came every couple of hours to give and take.
"Am I even close to the quota we scheduled?" I planned out a rough estimate on how many to complete per day to ensure I made the deadlines. He glanced over at his desk and slumped in relief. "That is the last stack for today at least."
Thank God. Hearing that reinvigorated me to get through the last leg of the race. So within no time we managed to finish on time. "I'm off. Feel free to head out once the files have been copied and stored away. We can start fresh tomorrow."
My secretary waved me off as I left for my haircut. However no sooner than when I finished the cut did I get a call from work. "Damn. And just when I was set to head home." As much as I wanted to ignore the call I knew my secretary probably had no other option.
I had a strict rule that off hours meant off hours. I never checked an email, text, phone call, hell even a fax. Nothing work related was to be told to me when I was not being paid for it. During my heavier party years this was crucial as I was in no state to be working when I was playing.
"Sir sorry to call you but when I was storing the documents I saw that one of the files which was sealed was open. When I investigated further every file related to that one was open. As per protocol we need to escalate this as we could have tampered documents."
As a rule of thumb any documents I personally sign especially for records involving huge financial movements, were to be sealed and then stored away. To the rest of the staff as well as to related governing bodies, the records were kept in house on paper. However, they were also stored digitally but only myself and my secretary know that. It was a safety net for instances like this so I have a reference especially for older documents.
"Ugh this blows. Fine heading back now. Pull all the tampered files and check for any new ones as well. Order some dinner using the company card and grab my laptop from my desk in the false drawer and load up the server. This is gonna take a while."
I hung up and drove back. The next protocol would be us going through each file and comparing it to the digital copy. If it checks out we reseal it and move on. It is tedious but doing so helps us see what changed or is missing.
While I worked on the comparisons I had him look at the security footage to see if anything cropped up. It is hard to tell exactly when this occurred but based on the file I had him focus on early March as this was an acquisition from that time.
What should have been an early day ended with a late evening. It was not until the moon had risen that we checked all the files and determined what had happened. One of the accountants had messed up on a payments stub and opened the files to reference the numbers from before to check his work. Not a big deal but they should have asked so we could have opened them for him and then sealed it again after.
I was too tried and bleary eyed to want to punish him so I just revoked his access to the file room. Because of the whole debacle I could not even text Celeste until I got home. However it worked out as she was eating dinner with friends so she was unreachable until now.
"Princess your timing is impeccable, I just got home from work."
She looked cozy in her pajamas and based on the clothes surrounding her it seemed she was in her closet. I placed my phone on the nightstand to also get ready for sleep as I was exhausted and had an early day the next day. "I saw the cut, it looks good. Is that why you finished work so late?"
Ah work. To not get visibly annoyed I decided to not mention the incident. After all it was a rookie mistake and my time is better spent telling her pleasant things. "Yeah while we are not near the end of the year yet because of the sheer volume of capital we have I like to start early on getting all the final end of the year bonuses and financial reports done. Besides, with the exhibition also closing soon I have to work on getting all the pieces returned either to the artist or to their new owner as some expressed interest in selling."
Wearing suits and business wear was uncomfortable. I don't see how my dad can stand doing that everyday. I always felt constricted despite the suits being tailored to my size. So I stretched and removed my shirt tossing it off to the side.
I also unbuttoned my pants and tossed those to the side as well. My pajamas were in the dresser by the nightstand so when I grabbed my phone I realized that I was on camera. I subtly glanced at Celeste to see her cheeks tinged that beautiful shade of pink I adore. Her lips formed a small 'o' as she openly admired my tattoos.
Her reaction gave me vivid flashbacks to the wedding night which of course made another part of me start to stand at attention.
