" Street race?" I asked, looking at miles and wondering whether he was pulling my leg. I had asked Austin what er were doing there after we got off the car, and although some pretty off-putting presumptuous had raced to the front of my mind, that hadn't been anywhere among them.
" You heard me! And our boy over here is the king of the streets!" Miles added before wrapping an arm around Austin and pulling him closer. Pride in both his and Will's faces when he did so. I looked at Austin, speechless and openly displeased. Then I just stood there and watched as the trio took Austin's bike out of the truck carefully and settled it down. Will volunteered to push it for him, saying he didn't want him tired before the race began. That he was going to place his bet on him and there was no way he was gonna risk losing.
" Come on, it's this way, " he then said before walking ahead of us and leading the way, pushing the bike along. It was evident he was the only one who knew exactly where to go. We were walking down that same dark alley, but a while later we ended up on a well lit street. Miles had wanted to walk side by side with Austin at first, but I had held his arm and pulled him back to where I was, he needed to do some heavy explaining because I was starting to suspect he was actually out if his mind, because otherwise why would he be doing such things?
" Street racing, seriously?"
" Don't start. It's cool, I assure you. "
" If by cool you mean unsafe and possibly illegal then yes Austin, it's VERY cool!"
My tone was low, but that didn't mean I couldn't make him realize just how mad I was. It was so late at night, and of my guess was correct, he did things like that even on school nights. No wonder he always looked so worn out during classes.
" You remember the route?" Miles asked, glancing back at us.
" Sure he does,we came by a couple days ago and I took him through it. Even showed him a few blindspots he could use to his advantage. You remember them right?"
" Of course I do. "
" Did he practice?" Miles asked them and Austin nodded once more. I felt as if I was fourth wheeling on their weird suicidal date or something.
" Managed to complete the course in about fourteen minutes, but it was noon and I wasn't competing against anyone so there's no knowing how it'll turn out tonight. "
" You said the same thing last time but still ended up beating the hell outta those punks! So I'm sure you've got this. "
" Yeah, especially with that improvements we made on this baby!"Will tapped the bike,a broad and hopeful smile on his face. I looked up, saw a crowd which was the main source of all that noise. And I felt two times worse. They all looked like guys who had, at a certain point in their lives, spent some time locked up at a juvenile facility. No offense, but that's just the vines they gave off. I heard some music playing from somewhere, not even my type of music, and I could smell both alcohol and weed in the air around us. We got to the crowd and I noticed that it was larger than I had first thought, there were quite a number of people there, and further down the street, they dispersed to clear out the space on the tarmac. Occupying only the sides of the wide path. A few strangers spotted and hurried over to us,but I soon realized they were only strangers to me because the others, including Austin, seemed to be very familiar with them. It was two girls and a guy. Only one girl seemed our age, the other two were clearly older.
" I can't believe you lied to me! You said you wouldn't be coming today!" the younger girl complained as she playfully hit Miles' chest. He laughed and wrapped his arms around her from behind, resting his chin on the top of her head and shifting so that they faced the other two.
" I don't even know why I'm here anymore, I should just give up and go back home," the guy that had some over said, his eyes on Austin. My eyes fell to his hand,he was holding keys, and he also had knee pads on. So I automatically registered that he was a racer as well.
" Oh don't feel bad Trick, second place isn't too shabby either. "
It was Austin that told him that, and everyone else laughed...apart from me. What I needed was to try and understand how I hadn't known about any of that until that exact moment. I looked around, at all the people,I could see a number of sports bikes scattered around the area. I tucked my hands into my pockets and concentrated on not looking too out of place.
" This is nothing like all the other races though!I mean, even Jay came out to play, " The girl getting all cozy in Miles'arms said. It was practically freezing cold, but she was dressed in nothing other than a pair of extremely short denim shorts and....I wanna call it a top but I doubt it deserves that title. It was more of a glamorous bra in my opinion, black with all these shiny decorations on it.
" Not only Jay, even his best friend's here. You know him?" Trick asked and both Will and Miles turned to face each other, then Will chuckled and nodded before saying...
" About this tall? Radiates high levels of 'show-off energy? walks like he owns the fucking place?...oh we know him alright. "
" You guys talking about Dave? he's not that bad! " The cold resistant girl said.
" Tell that to my ribs!" Will muttered and the girl laughed.
" Oh right! I heard about your fight. What was that about anyways?... Rumours have it--" she stopped when her eyes landed on me.
I had been standing there with them for close to ten minutes but she just seems to notice my presence.
" Oh! Guys! How rude of you! You haven't even introduced your friend to us!" She whined, pulling Will's ear in a manner that proved they were really close. And suddenly all the attention was on me.
" I was about to say the same thing, " the other girl said as she brought her hair over her shoulder. She had dyed it black with blue on the tips. Literally. But it suit her somehow.
I felt Austin as he pressed himself against me, then his hand on my back, underneath the jacket. But I didn't look at him because the whole idea of putting himself in danger like that was still not sitting well with me.
" My apologies, " Miles stated, lowering his hands to the girl's waist instead.
" Guys, this is Kyle, he's..." He stopped and turned to both Austin on me, not sure of what to say. I would have been okay if he just said we were classmates, or friends. There was no need to draw attention to anything, but I understood he was just being careful because he didn't want to say anything that would make us uncomfortable.
" He's my boyfriend," Austin coolly finished off. We were officially dating, everyone knew that by then, but that was the first time he'd used that particular word in public and when I had assumed it would make me feel uncomfortable, it ended up doing the opposite. I looked at him, holding back the smile but knowing he could see it in my eyes because his own lips curved up slightly.
" Whoa seriously! " The blue haired girl stated, sounding shocked, then she let out a shirt laugh and sighed.
" Wait till Maggie finds out about this, she was planning on asking you out, " she then said, delivering the statement to Austin who simply shrugged it off like it was no big deal. I didn't like that bit of info at all!
" I warned her! Girl wouldn't listen," Miles added.
" Hey, I'm Patrick but everyone calls me Trick, " the other racer guy introduced himself, giving me a tiny wave before placing his arm back down. I said hi. The girl with the blue tips was Rachel, and she was apparently Trick's girlfriend, and the one clinging onto Miles was June. After the introductions, they went back to their stories. Someone asked me if I raced as well and I tried my best not to look at them like they were out of their mind.
" He doesn't, " Austin replied ony behalf, then his hand began slowly rubbing up and down my back.
" Have you already placed your bets?" Trick asked and Miles said they were just about to do that.
" The race starts in about fifteen minutes so you'd better hurry. Don't forget to lay it on your champ! " Trick advised, pointing to himself. But I wasn't able to listen to the rest of the interaction because Austin excused himself and led both of us away. We didn't go that far from them, I could still see them all clearly from our new position, but I couldn't hear what they were saying. Shifting to stand Infront of me, he studied me intently.
" I was gonna tell you eventually, " he explained before I said anything. And God did I have a lot to say.
