Capítulo 3: LET'S GET IT ON
The door broke, and the infected ran to us. They are hungry and crazy ready to eat us alive, but we will not allow it. We have to fight to survive, and I must fight for my mother, which I keep behind me to protect her from any danger that those IT will cause. I heard a gunshot from Lieutenant Roel, who is brave to fight even with his one arm while I and the rest are fighting with the things we have. I am holding a serum holder and using it to protect myself while my mother is holding a hospital knife. I hit the infected with the serum holder on her face, but it seemed to do nothing to her. She got up again and attacked us while I used the holder to stab the other infected in his heart. He falls on the floor, but when I pull it out, he stands up again and attacks us, and the wound he got from my stabbing completely healed, like they are immortal. They are too many, and I don't know if we can beat them or if we will be their meal.
I saw one of the nurses get bit, and I immediately pulled the infected that bit her, which made her arm skin tear. I kept hitting the one who bit her with the serum holder I was holding until I saw it not moving. The other one is trying to bite Luis, and I am about to hit it too, but Roel has already shot it, making it fall on the floor for a while and stand up again. The gun wound on his chest healed when the nurse that got bit attacked me, but Luis accidentally pulled her and shot her accidentally on her head. It didn't stand up anymore. That is why I discover their weakness is hitting their heads, thanks to Luis.
"We need to get out of here," Roel said, ordering us to get out of the room because they are many, and we were only six, but how could we go out? Is the door our only way out?
"Follow me", He added, and he kept on firing to cover us until we all got out of the room, but the infected now are everywhere, and we needed to fight again and run to save our lives even though there was no assurance that we will be safe outside the hospital.
"We need to get out of this place. We need to find somewhere safe from the infected," Roel ordered.
"Let's try to go to Makati to my dad's place", Luis suggested.
"What?" My mother asked.
"I want to get my Craven", She added. I know how it hurts her about what happened to my sister, but saving her is too late.
I stopped at the door where I hid the disabled man who had given me a letter from his family. I want to get him out of the hospital. That is why I opened the door to check for him, but I saw blood on the floor and I got shocked when he crawled fast to me with his bleeding eyes and torn wrist, and besides his wheelchair, I saw a scissor. He cut himself, which killed him and turned him into one of the infected. I didn't know that he will be going to kill himself. Maybe he was hopeless when he heard the commotion outside. Roel shoots him in his head, which instantly kills him. I looked at him for a moment, but my mother pulled my arms to leave the room because we didn't have time.
"Let's keep moving," Roel said because the infected kept following us.
We run to the elevator, but it is not working anymore, so we need to use the stairs. When we hear a gunshot on the fifth floor, that makes us hurry because there is still a human left. They are a group of men. Two are militaries, one is a hospital guard, and the two are a man and woman who I think is a couple. We join them; like us, they want to get out of the hospital.
We followed the soldiers, and while we kept fighting to get those infected down, they were strong. One of them crawls onto the wall and grabs the nurse fighting with us.
"Caroline!" My mother shouted when she saw one of the infected lift Caroline to the wall and start biting her. When the IT was done biting her, Caroline was dropped on the floor after a moment. She starts attacking us.
What are these creatures? They are no longer human. They more like a demon hungry for flesh or a zombie. Yes! A zombie. They are a zombie that I usually watch on Netflix, and I can't believe they are real. That is why when Roel shot one of them in the head. It didn't attack anymore. The head is the weakness and the only way to kill them because their wounds heal every time we hit them in any part of their body.
"Move! Move!" One of the soldiers said, but the infected are many, and we can't move as fast as we want.
"Help! Help! Help!" The Doctor said his head was bleeding because his left ear was torn apart. The IT bite it.
"I am not infected", He desperately cried because Luis's gun was pointing at him, but before Luis pulled the trigger, Linda had already hit the Doctor on the head with a heavy-duty hospital patient record clipboard that she was holding as many as she could.
"Sorry, Doctor Reyes, that is what you got for fucking me and leaving me," She said.
"Don't let yourself get bitten, or else we will shoot you too," The soldier said while we kept moving.
We were on the third floor when I saw a woman crying while looking for her baby. She is wearing a hospital gown, and the umbilical cord is still intact. She is bleeding while walking around and looking for her baby.
"I will name my baby, Zandro because he is a boy, and he looks like his father, and you know what? He is my everything," She cried.
"Zandro, where are you?"
"Your dad is proud of you. He told me before he died."
"My baby's name is Zandro, and because he is a boy. I named him Zandro."
The woman was giving birth when the turning of humans happened, so she kept repeating the last words that happened to her, like what happened to Craven before she turned. She keeps saying about the things that might happen on their Sunday praising. Maybe it is the things their pastor preaches, but where did the virus start? I remember Craven mentioned Betty, the pastor's daughter that came back to life like Lazarus. Is she the reason why this is happening? But how did Betty come back to life, and where is she now?
The woman stopped walking, and I saw blood fall from her eyes and blood appeared on her skin because her skin was melting, like what exactly happened to my sister, and she started attacking and biting the janitor who was holding a mop.
"Ahhhh!!!"
I heard a scream of pain, and the other infected attacked the janitor. It is too late for us to help him because he has already got bitten, so Roel shoots him in the head to end his suffering. We keep running to get out of this hospital, but we are only on the third floor, and we can't get out fast because there are too many.
"Shit," The soldier said when he ran out of bullets on his gun, that is why he used his gun to smash those infected.
"Fuck", Roel whispered when he saw the infected blocking the stairs, and we could not go down because they are too many.
"What are we going to do now?" My mother asked him.
"Get inside the cafeteria," He said. We immediately followed what he said. We get inside the cafeteria and close the door.
We heard the infected running to the cafeteria because they knew we were inside. Roel went inside the kitchen and pulled the gas tank. He instructed the young soldier to throw the tank outside the cafeteria, and he would shoot it to create an explosion and a fire because that was the only way for us to get out of this hospital. The soldier lifted the tank while Luis and the other one were preparing their gun to shoot just in case the infected got inside the cafeteria when they opened the door. My mother, Linda and the couple hid because I knew it would be a big explosion.
"1...2...3", Roel counted, and then they opened the door. The soldier threw the tank, and Roel shot it and closed the door immediately, and then we heard a loud explosion that can shake the whole hospital.
The door got broken, and we immediately went out of the cafeteria. I saw a lot of infected lying on the floor. Some are dead because their heads burned or smashed, while others are still alive and moving slowly even though their bodies were torn apart. I can hear the snarling, and they are still trying to reach us. We run to the stairs to the second floor, but there are still infected waiting for us and ready to bite us. I am using the serum holder that I am holding. I hit the infected hard on their heads while keeping my mother close to me. She is fighting, too, with a heavy-duty hospital record board that she is holding like Linda.
"Keep moving!" Roel said. Even though he only has one arm, the fearless lieutenant still manages to do his duty to protect us.
"Edwin, help! Edwin!" The wife screamed when the IT behind her grabbed her and bit her.
Edwin, the husband, tried to pull him, but one of the soldiers stopped him and pulled him to the stairs. I saw tears in Edwin's eyes, but his wife was already infected, and soon she will be one of them. We went down, and finally, we were already on the ground floor. That surprised me because the ground floor was a living hell. I saw three of the infected eating the dead body of a girl on the floor while the others were eating the dead woman. They pulled her intestine out and started eating it like wild animals. The blood covered the floor, and the other who got bitten shook and gently turned. We went outside the hospital, and we heard gunshots.
"Over there," I said while pointing at the military truck, ready to leave.
"Hey!" The three lieutenants suddenly shouted to get their brother's attention. We ran to the truck while the militaries fired at the infected following us.
We rode in the truck and drove away. While the infected are running following us. The three soldiers threw their grenades to stop the infected from following us, and we left the border of Imus to find somewhere safe. I looked at Edwin; he was crying without sound because of his wife's death.
"Are you okay?" I asked, but he didn't answer. He signs language, and I found out that he is deaf.
"I am sorry," I told him, not because he is deaf but because I am sorry for what happened to his wife. Nobody wants this to happen.
"Are you all guys okay?" One of the soldiers asked, but we didn't answer because we were shocked.
"No bites?" He asked.
"We are safe", Roel answered.
"I am Sargeant Cruz," He said.
"Lieutenant Loyola," Roel said.
"We will go to the base."
"Where base?"
"Tugegarao"
"Still safe there?"
"Yes, the only safe place in the north."
"How about in the south?"
"Legazpi"
"Wait, what?" Luis suddenly asked when he heard what the Sargeant said, but the sergeant just looked at him.
"How about in Makati?"
"Dead"
"No," He said with dismay. He sat back because he couldn't believe it.
"I talked to my father hours ago, and he said he would wait for me. He will lock all the doors and not let anyone in," He said, convincing the Sarge that his father and sister were still alive because he wanted to go there.
"He is probably dead by now."
"What did you say?!"
"Look at everywhere. We didn't expect this to happen and are unprepared for this."
"I want to go there."
"It's suicide."
Luis sits back and sighs because he doesn't want to think that his father and sister are dead. Of course, nobody wants to believe that your loved ones are dead without seeing it right in your eyes, but the Sargeant is right. Infected are everywhere, and they are getting plenty. How can a father and a young girl survive alone? The infected are aggressive. They can run and even crawl on the ceiling and walls.
"I still want to go there", Luis insisted.
"Go, but we will not go with you," Sargeant Cruz said.
"Sarge", One of the soldiers called him and pointed to the things that looked like jaguars because they were positioned like jaguars.
I didn't know that there were jaguars on the coastal road, but when they started moving, we stared at them. We are all terrified because the infected are running like jaguars now.
"Oh shit!"
They ready their ammunition and start shooting the infected before they get us. They are not letting them close to the truck, or we are all dead. I started getting scared again and wanted to panic, but I needed to be strong for my mother, who was sitting beside me, because she was my only family. I have already lost my sister and don't want to lose my mother.
The truck is fast because the infected are fast too. I can't believe what I am witnessing, even if it is already happening. The infected are full of surprises. I thought they could just run and crawl, but now they can run faster than humans and are ready to catch us to feast us down. They are not like the zombies from the walking dead because they don't look like zombies now. They are more like 'Asawang', A Filipino folklore like ghouls and vampires but worsen.
"Ahhh" I heard a scream because the infected grabbed one of the soldiers beside me and ate him before his body touched the ground.
I hit the other infected, who tried to grab me and made my serum holder broken and cut into two. Now I have two, but shorter. I still use it as my weapon to protect myself and my mother.
"Help!" I heard a scream from a soldier.
Another soldier was down because of the zombies. I saw a bunch of zombies eating him like they were very hungry because of their endless hunger. I keep hitting any infected who get near us because I will never give them a chance to grab my mother or me. Even my arms are hurting, and my body is tired. I haven't eaten my breakfast because of Craven, but I will not give up until we reach the base.
"Why is the dead now walking on earth?" Linda asked while fighting the dead.
The truck is getting faster because the infected are fast, too. They throw a grenade again, and when it explodes, its force pushes the truck, making it fly and crash.
I regained consciousness when I heard a growl, and I immediately kicked the zombie, trying to pull me out of the truck. The truck was upside down, and I was under when I heard gunshots that made me crawl to check what was happening. I saw Luis, Edwin, Roel and Sargeant, and the two more soldiers survive the crash. Sargeant's leg is bleeding, and he can't stand up properly. That is why Roel is helping him. The infected followed us and wanted to eat us. We are tired but don't have time to rest because the infected are still attacking with total energy. I looked around, but I noticed my mother and Linda were gone.
"Mom", I called.
"Mom!" I screamed, looking for her.
"Mom!"
When an infected pushed me, that made me fall to the ground, and she tried to bite me, but I was blocking my arm on her neck. She is leaning on me, trying to reach me just to bite me. I saw a swiss army knife, and I tried to grab it before the infected bit me and pierced it hard on her head to reach the brain because it was the only way to kill her. When she stopped moving, I pushed her and stood up to find my mother.
"Alice", My mother called me. She is with Linda and now holding a rifle.
"I am glad you are okay," She said and hugged me.
I am glad that she is alive. I looked at her because it was my first time seeing her holding a gun because she was a doctor, not a soldier. I took the swiss army knife into the infected forehead because I would use it to kill the zombies.
"Come on, let's follow them," She said.
We put the zombies left in a grenade explosion down, and we started walking on a hot sunny day on the coastal road. I looked around while walking. I am looking for the zombies because they are just out there waiting for their prey, and those we killed a while ago are nothing to their actual numbers. The jaguar zombies are still in my head, which makes me worried. What if there were hundreds of jaguar zombies we met on the way? What makes them aggressive compared to the others?
"Wait, wait, wait", Sarge said, and he sat on the hot ground.
"My leg is hurt," He said.
"Let me check it," My mother said with Linda, and together they checked Sarge's leg.
"It is bleeding too much," She said.
"We need to stop the bleeding," She told Sarge.
"Do what you have to do?" Sarge said in pain.
My mother kneeled and wiped the wound with tissue inside her pocket and put a tourniquet on his wound to stop it from bleeding too much. For now, that is the least she can do because we are not in the hospital to stitch his torn skin.
"You will be fine."
"Thank you"
We kept moving before the infected found us even though we didn't know where to go because Makati was way too far, and we didn't know what we would have along the way. I heard a snarling and saw an infected wearing a government uniform walking toward us. He is walking slowly, not like the others a while ago. Luis is about to shoot him, but Roel stops him.
"The others might hear your gunshots. Save it for the aggressive."
I walked towards the infected, and he tried to bite me but was slow. I stabbed him with the knife on his head and looked at him for a moment. He doesn't have any bite marks, but he got infected. It means that any one of us can be infected even if we don't get bitten; that is how strong the virus is.
"Let's go. Let's keep on moving," Sargeant Cruz said.
