48.66% Wretch: Exception To The Rule / Chapter 91: Dark, Damp Caves

Capítulo 91: Dark, Damp Caves

The place had a somewhat rocky ground, highly uneven and full of sharp edges, though, much like the walls and probably the ceiling too, it was covered in thick moss, which oozed water at the slighest of touch.

The sound of hacking didn't stop nor slowed down for a long while as Axio did his best navigate the area, at least, he could eat the moss without problem, that was one problem solved and since it was gorged with water, it also solved another.

The water of the ocean was clearly not fit for consumption after all, it was already irritating on the outside, he didn't want to test out the inside.

The air inside was so humid that he felt like he was sweating when it was just water drops forming directly on his body, the caves were actually cold, very much so.

As he neared the source of the noises, after hours of moving around in utter darkness, always following the wall to his right, because as everyone knew, that was how to get out of any situation, follow the right.

However, as he got closer, the sounds suddenly stopped and instead, he began hearing the sounds of multiples sets of footsteps converging in the position the hacking had been coming from.

It sounded like something, multiple similar things in fact, were being dragged as the owners of the footsteps moved around, they were clearly walking on two legs and from the rough, rubbing noises they also emmited, it sounded like they were armored.

Someone spoke up, it sounded like something the wretch could comprehend but he wasn't close enough yet to make out all of the words, all he knew was that it sounded off, like the person speaking wasn't in their right state of mind.

No one responded to the voice and it was clear that battle ensued immediately after, sweapons struck one another, equipement was shattered, blood splattered for a few minutes until only a single set of footsteps remained, casually walking back from where it had came from and resuming hacking away at whatever.

Axiolypito was no expert, but it had definitely seemed like a group of well-armed people, knights perhaps, had landed an attack on a single man and that only that last one had come out of it with his life.

The confrontation had lasted that long either, it now definitely seemed like a terrible idea to go in the direction of this guy, but Axio knew no fear, even after getting beaten to near death not so long ago, he couldn't fathom this happening again.

He didn't have tons of his troops at the ready on a battlefield anyways, so he wouldn't be able to pull up the same thing as before anyways.

Axiolypito advanced still, until he reached the designated area, where there was light!

Now, he could finally see again and the sight was pretty gruesome, yet, expertly done, the filthy, vagrant-looking madman hunched over a pile of corpses, relentlessly bringing his strange axe down on the inanimate mass was most definitely a skilled killer.

The wretch was able to confirm what he had guessed with his hearing alone, the attackers did appear to be knights, although, very much in the spirit of the place they were in.

Their armors weren't made out of steel but scales, most likely taken from some sturdy water creature and since they all wore the same sort of scales, it should be present in abundance, the ocean might have seemed quite empty but it was definitely not the case.

He supposed that he would need to go deeper to encounter the fauna, the two things he had had the displeasure of encountering had most likely been straying away from there usual spots, the light-bearing one because it had somehow noticed Axio and the second because it had seen the first creature.

Speaking of light, the source of it wasn't torches or some luminescent crystals or whatnot, the light the knight's had been carrying appeared to be the appendages of some monster or beast, perhaps the one Axio was more familiar with.

The limb had been cut off but retained its capacity, implying two things, the knight's couldn't see in the dark but their killer either could or didn't need to, because the number of lights was the same as the amount of knight corpses, each close to a body as well.

'...' Axio silently inspected the knights, they definitely weren't humans, they were fish-like in appearance, big, globular and protruding eyes, oddly sized jaws considering their overall, humanoid appearance.

Axio wanted nothing more than to devour their corpses as fast as possible, even their armor perhaps, since they were made from the remnants of a corpse as well, even their swords were more like the pointy protuberance of a swordfish, so probably edible too.

The wretch licked his lips as he turned his gaze to the peculiar man that had easily slain them, he didn't appear wounded, at least from his back alone.

Firstly, Axio didn't believe him to be a native, because he looked very human, his hands, although bloodied were rough and fair, his white hair, falling just over his nape and the small piece of face that could be made out, a white beard clearly visible.

He had nothing to do with these fish people, he was wearing a long, grey coat, burdened by the strain of time and use, blood had spilled many time over its surface.

On his head a round hat, much in the same state as the coat, those weren't meant for submersion, he had no business here and yet, definitely appeared to have been in this cave for a long time.

The most curious thing however, was his axe, having rarely held any sort of weapon, Axio wasn't knowledgeable but it definitely did look weird, he just couldn't describe what was making him feel this way.

Suddenly, the man stopped mid-swing and turned his head a bit, toward the wretch, breathing in strongly and repeatedly from the nose before exhaling from the mouth as he fully turned around and stood up.

"Well, they just keep coming tonight! Grandiose! The hunt has yet to conclude for me..." he spoke in a harsh tone, not displaying any of the joy the words used seemed to want to convey.

Axio now understood.

The man's face was now in full display, he was an old man, but one that hadn't aged poorly, he had been a killing machine in his youth and he hadn't degraded as of yet.

Across his aged face, the clear marks of a beast's claw had left deep ridges, a most dreadful wound as the slashes crossed all of his face diagonally, both eyes were reaped and one nostril was torn asunder with its inside now exposed to the outside

"Oh... You... You! You still live?!"
