The Race
SS 2 A students were all noisy and ill mannered since most of them became officials. Some of them used the opportunity to get back at juniors who were once arrogant while others did a responsible job of taking care of the school and its students. On getting back to school Vivian, Sophia and Jackson were told to take up the reserved offices. Sophia was reserved the office of the Deputy Senior Prefect, Vivian on the other hand was reserved the office of the Disciplinarian and Jackson was reserved the office of Sports Prefect. This three were shocked to hear this. Vivian was shocked the most since she doesn't want to participate in any of this. Sophia convinced Jackson and Vivian to accept the responsibility and of course they had no choice.
" I just don't get it" Vivian said. " I thought I was not in school ? How come I have an office to be responsible for ?"
" I hate stress " Jackson said and threw himself on the bed.
" It's okay guys, let's talk about how Jackson would organize the forthcoming Inter-house sports competition"
" Won't I be working with the sports teacher ?"
" A responsible sports prefect should map out things that should be done, organize them and send them to the teacher to analyze" Sophia said
" I didn't sign up for this" Jackson replied.
With the help of Sophia, Jackson was able to compile sports activities.
next day he went to the sports teacher to submit the compiled file.
" Jackson I need your help with something"
" What is it Sir ?"
" I need you to participate in the Race competition"
" I would love to but..."
" It just 100 meter race. As the sports prefect you should be able to do something"
" Sir, I can do anything but race. I..."
" Jackson I'm telling you to do this as an order not a plea"
" Sir I'm sorry but..."
" You have to prepare for it so you should get going".
During the break period, Jackson went to Vivian's classroom to tell them what happened.
" Did he like the compilation ?" Sophia asked
" Why is your face like that ?" Vivian asked
" He liked it but..." As he opened his mouth to speak tears rolled down his eyes. Sophia immediately rushed to him and hugged him while Vivian opened her school bag and brought out his inhaler.
" Hey, it okey. You need to calm down so you can talk to us. Don't let the asthma get triggered" Sophia said Patting his back.
" He ..." He still couldn't speak but instead was breathing fast and deeply. Vivian opened a can of water and handed it to Jackson.
After a while, Jackson opened up to them
" Is that man mad ? Everyone in the school knows you're asthmatic and should avoid strenuous exercises " Sophia yelled.
" Looks like I need to do some research tonight "
" No Vivi, just try and get some sleep. I will do it"
" But you know you shouldn't"
"Nothing will happen "
" Just because you were crying it almost got triggered" Vivian said
" I promise nothing will happen"
" I will call my mom when I get home maybe there may be some medicine you can take"
" You should take permission to go home earlier" Sophia told Jackson
" I have test after the break"
" Then we should grab something delicious to eat"
They left for the cafeteria for lunch. After school that day, Vivian called her mum to verify if there's any medicine Jackson can take to reduce the risks available during the race. That as usual Vivian didn't sleep. She had a research to do. She opened the box she grandfather had given her before kissing the dust. She called the sports teacher's name and asked the box why the teacher insisted on doing something dangerous to her friend. The mirror in it opened only for her to see a date, location and time that she needs to be there.
The following morning,she met her friends in school. She was as usual looking tired and sleepy.
" How are you baby girl" Jackson asked
" As usual"
" How did it go ? Did you find anything ?"
" Well, I was asked to find the answers myself"
" Are there clues"
"Sure. Today by 10 am behind the school library"
"Alright then let's meet by 9:40 am so we would go together"
The three went to their classrooms but were anxiously waiting for the lesson to end quickly. Immediately the rang the bell for change of subject by 9:40 am the three left their classrooms. On arriving at the location, they hid as their eavesdrop on the two men discussing behind the library.
" I really don't have a good reason to do this to him"
" But the boss paid well for this"
" His father won't spare us if he tells him about this"
" The weather broadcast says it would rain on Saturday, so I'm sure we can blame it on the rain"
"What if he dies"
" That's exactly the goal"
" How much is he paying us for such a risky job ?"
" Five million naira, we would divide it by fifthy percent"
On hearing this, they left and went back to classroom without discussing anything. After school they headed straight to their secret lodge.
" The summary is that someone paid them to get rid of of Jack" Sophia said immediately they got inside the lodge.
"Jack do you bear a grudge against someone or did you have a fight we do not know about?"
" Vivian you should know me better like I'm as confused as you are"
" One at a time, let's focus on how to handle the competition first then we will talk about the idiot after your life"
" I got you medicine from mum"
" Thanks"
She handed the medicine to Jackson.
On the day of the inter- house competition. Students did alot of sports activities like match past, volleyball tournament, basketball game, soccer, relay race and so on. The clouds were getting darker and thicker when the sports teacher called out the 100 meters race to start their competition. Even though some teachers tried to stop him but he seems adapt to his decision. Halfway to the race , it began drizzling.
" Vivian please help a friend"
Vivian left the arena and soon came back . To the amazement of everyone, the stopped. Jackson finished the race and came first too. Immediately he finished, Vivian gave him the pills.
