The Mysteries of Mithras started off as a small cult of worshippers beyond the Eastern Parts of the Empire, in a land without a patron god and among a polytheistic population. The original cult worshipped Mithras as a solar deity who was also a god of justice, covenant, oath, and light. In addition to being the divinity of contracts, sun, and light, Mithra is also a judicial figure, an all-seeing protector of Truth, and the guardian of cattle, the harvest, and of the Waters.
The declaration of the Holy War by the Patriarch of Ravenna is a modified version of the Speech of Urban II at the Council of Clermont, because I want the novel to be as realistic in its elements as possible.
