"You...you're willing to marry me??"
Madeline's eyes had grown wider in astonishment. She already assumed she'd have to give a proper reason as to her motives for wanting to marry a man like him, considering the rules that would oppose their marriage, but now that he's accepted her proposal without putting more questions forth her way, Madeline felt the need to be cautious.
Looking at him up close in the lit up carriage, she noticed the dark tiny mole that was beneath his left eye. It rested there, looking like a beauty mechanism that allured her interest..
She was thrown off guard when the young lad suddenly winked at her.
"Lord Cassian, what are you saying??" The Coachman's panicked voice snapped Madeline out of her dazed situation, and her eyes were now fixed on Amadeus.
The old man was currently at the verge of grabbing the young man's collar, shaking him as much as he could till his senses returned from wherever he left them.
"Are you listening to me?"
"Loud and clear Amade." He looked at the old man, "hush." He silenced him, knowing where the conversation would definitely head to if he let him speak further.
Madeline on the other hand was speechless, and he looked at her, "tell me, do you have our wedding rings with you?"
"I_didn't know…..you."
He let out an exasperated sigh as she continued to speak, "it's obvious that man was your uncle, speaking without a proper sentence seems to run in your family."
"I am just_"
"You brought the proposal yourself, which means whatever response you get shouldn't be of any surprise to you." He remarked. "So, do you have the rings?"
She shook her head honestly, already feeling bad she didn't plan the whole thing properly. "It was a decision I made abruptly, I don't have any ring with me."
The coachman suddenly stopped the carriage. The church wasn't too far ahead and to their luck, the lights were on which means someone was available.
"What do we do?" He asked, looking at Madeline who cracked her head for a better solution. Her eyes suddenly lit up like she just thought of something.
"Just a minute, I have an idea but it might take a bit of your time. You two can go along without me, I'll join you when I'm done." She got down from the carriage and headed towards the flowery path, giving the two men no opportunity to ask her what her plan was.
"Where is she going?" Cassian questioned as he watched her slender figure go down the path.
"Running away?" Amadeus hoped that was the case.
"I thought you wanted to see me get married someday, stop being a killjoy." Cassian got down from the carriage.
He instructed the owner of the carriage to wait for them before heading up the stoned stairs with a worried Amadeus by his side.
"Lord Cassian, do you really want to do this?" He asked again.
"If I didn't, I wouldn't have agreed." Cassian quipped.
"But why? Your father won't accept this, and your mother won't spare you for getting married behind her back. You're in enough trouble as it is. It will be better not to add to it."
"Father wants me to marry one of those bunch of sticks he brought home last year," Cassian clicked his tongue, "they're like insects prickling on my skin whenever I see them."
"But your father wants you to marry the daughter of a Marquees, or even the King's daughter, someone worthy of the status you'll bear."
"Do you not like my choice?" He stopped walking and turned to look at the blabbering Amadeus.
"Pardon?"
"Miss Albert is my choice, do you not like her??"
"Why wouldn't I?" Amadeus admitted, "Just these few minutes we've spent with her, I can tell she's a really good girl, and that is why I'm trying to stop the Mayhem you two are bringing upon yourself, cause I care for the both of you."
"You like her, and that is enough for me. I don't care about my father's choices regarding who I like. As for mother, I know how to handle her, so stop worrying and be happy, I'm finally getting married and making your wishes come true."
Giving the old man a friendly pat on the shoulder, he stepped into the church. Amadeus searched for his handkerchief and wiped his face with it.
"Lord, give me strength to survive the dramas of today." He prayed before going into the church.
Stepping inside, the church was a medium sized church. It wasn't that big, but it looked comfortable. Long seats were lined in rows as Cassian made his way in, and Amadeus quietly followed behind, praying for strength.
"Do I see visitors?" A man in a white robe stepped out of a corner, adjusting his brim glasses at the bridge of his nose so he could see his visitors.
"Lord Cassian?!" His eyes went round in surprise, and he stepped out quickly to stand before the young lad who was busy scanning the area.
"What a surprise to have you in my church." He bowed his head in greeting.
The people from the upper east quarters have nothing to do with the rest of the quarters. They had their own churches and every other thing, so he's a bit shocked to see a man like Cassian in his church.
"What can I do for you?" He asked with a welcoming smile, and Cassian finally settled his gaze on the man in a white robe.
"I'm getting married, and I need you to join us legally."
"You're getting married?!" The priest sounded shocked, but instantly cleared his throat after realizing his shock was obvious.
"I_I mean it is not a problem, just tell me what date you planned for the wedding and I'll take care of the rest."
"Today."
"Eh?"
"Right now." Cassian looked at the priest, "I'm getting married right now."
"Right now?? To whom??"
"Lord Cassian!" A feminine voice called him, and when Cassian turned around to see, Madeline was running towards his direction, holding two small little rings in her hand.
When she reached his side, she showed him the ring she made, "I couldn't buy a ring since I had no money with me, so I made one myself."
Opening her palm, she showed him the beautiful golden colored metallic wires she twisted into a ring, and at the top, it was designed with different flower petals, blue, white and pink.
She did the same thing to the second one, and it looked like a twin ring. "I know this is nothing compared to the expensive rings you have, but I asked the Coachman if he had glue, fortunately he did, and so I decorated them myself."
The priest and Amadeus were impressed by the result of her work. One of the rings was a bit bigger than the other, and Amadeus was sure that it belonged to Cassian.
"I see." Cassian took hold of the smaller ring before letting his eyes scan his bride, "why are you wet?"
At first Madeline didn't get his words, but when she felt the wetness of her wedding dress sticking against her skin, it finally dawned on her that she was a bit soaked.
"It started raining while I made the rings, so I got a little drenched because of it."
"That is not good, you could catch a cold." Amadeus worriedly added, and she smiled appreciatively.
"I am fine, I wasn't completely drenched, so I can handle it."
"Let's make this even then." Cassian asserted with a hint of humor, and no one understood what he meant until he headed for the door, to everyone's disbelief.
"Don't tell me he plans on getting drenched as well?" Amadeus facepalmed, unable to understand how his Young Lord's mind worked. He spent 25 years watching the young lad grow to the man he was, and still, his actions were always a surprise to him.
When he returned, he was equally drenched like Madeline, and the priest's mouth hung open that someone like Lord Cassian would take it upon himself to get drenched for his bride.
Is this how Young love works??
"Jesus! Lord Cassian!" Amadeus nearly had a heart attack. The only reason he was still standing was because the God above was granting him the strength he asked for.
What if he catches a cold?? Doesn't he think before deciding to do something??
"This wasn't necessary." Madeline, who was just as surprised, was against the idea. She would have stopped him earlier if she knew this was what he meant by getting even.
"And let you suffer from the cold yourself? No." He stared at the pretty ring in his grasp, "you went into the rain to do this, so this is the least I can offer you as appreciation, it's a pretty work." He complimented.
The priest, who was lost in the conversation, cleared his throat and gained the attention of the three people.
"The bride is here, what about the families? Friends? Witnesses?"
"He's the witness to my wedding." Cassian pointed at Amadeus who's eyes momentarily widened, "he's part of my family, his presence is enough."
"B_but you can't wed without having your family present."
"My parents are dead." Madeline told the priest, "I have no family, so the same can't be said for me."
"I'm so sorry." The priest held his tongue. When he looked at Cassian, the young lad wasn't smiling at all.
"Listen here, it's not advisable to ruin my bride's mood on such a beautiful night like this. If you can't do what we've asked then say it and we'll leave. Spit another rubbish and you'll be dead, then I'll seek forgiveness in your church."
"This way please…" the priest was obviously done asking questions. It would be better to wed them quickly before he loses his head in his own ministry.
