Capítulo 23: Episode 22

Time and eventually are cousins, if you try to elude them eventually time will catch up.

Michael Isaac

Cyril got to Akpara Ekpe's shrine at 12:25am, the wind howled as the trees bent in succession. They bent so hard their roots were almost disinterred from the earth. Thunder rumbled and lightning struck, the whole forest was buried in darkness. The moon gave no light yet visible from beyond the trees. No animal could muster courage to make a single sound, they had all gone to hiding for fear of the unknown that lingered deep in the realm that supersedes that which the eye could see. It is said that "animals have a keen sense of what transpires in the spiritual realm than humans."

And so it was that the birds of the air, the beasts of the wild and the rodents of the earth understood and felt the presence of an unknown than Cyril.

He walked towards where the shrine was but the place was bare. Everything had been brought down except the sticks that stood apart from each other.

He was confused and angry, he felt betrayed. He had lost everything and for what - nothing. "There was no where to go now" he thought, he walked towards a big tree that stood just on the edge of where the shrine was and sat down under it. He sat there thinking what to do next but he found no way out of his predicament and soon he was asleep.

In the morning he woke up and walked out from the forest towards the entrance of the village. A farmer saw him coming out from the road that led to the shrine. The man asked him what he was looking for.

"I am looking for Akpara Ekpe" Cyril replied.

"I went to his shrine but there was nobody there."

"A young man like you what do you want with Akpara Ekpe." The farmer asked.

"Nothing bad sir, my mother is sick and I wanted healing herbs for her." Cyril replied.

"Well I saw Akpara Ekpe and his assistant going into the evil forest, no one knows when he will come out from there." The man said.

"Which way leads to the evil forest." Cyril asked.

"Maybe I will catch up to him before he enters."

"Take this road down towards the highway, when you get to the highway, there is a path opposite this one on the other side of the highway. It leads straight into the evil forest."

"Thank you sir." He said.

He started out towards the highway, approaching the road he saw the path just opposite the one he came from, he crossed the road to the other side and started out for the evil forest. He had to meet Akpara Ekpe for a solution to the problem on ground.

He ran and ran and after about 30 minutes he got to a place deep in the forest. It was densely parked with plants but a path led straight through, under shrubs and trees. The plants he saw were quite different from regular plants, even plants he knew looked quite different. They had broader leaves, and thicker stems. The trees were taller than normal. Those that crept upon other trees had thicker yet snake-like stems. The fruits from the trees were bigger than normal. He felt hungry and a little faint, he had not eating anything since the day before. He walked towards one of the trees that looked like a mango tree and plucked a fruit from one of its branches.

The fruit tasted sour like lime, it did not taste like a normal mango fruit so he threw it to the ground and walked away. After about 10 minutes he heard footsteps behind him, he turned round but saw no one. He continued on and still he felt the presence of someone behind him, he turned around once again and saw no one, only the rustling of dried up leaves.

He had walked for about an hour or so but there was no sign of Akpara Ekpe nor his assistant. He sat down under a tree to catch his breath from exhaustion and hunger. He thought about what to do next, should he turn around now or continue on? While rummaging through the palace of his mind suddenly Akpara Ekpe appeared from nowhere with his assistant. He asked Cyril what he was doing this far into the forest.

"The great Oracle, I have come to ask you to find another way out for me. I have completed two tasks already. At least I should reap from those two now." Cyril replied.

"You have no business in this realm and concerning your tasks it is either all or non.

They are only complete when you perform all of them." The Oracle said.

"No! No! No! Akpara Ekpe, you deceived us." Cyril mustered

"After all i have been through this past weeks, you cannot say that. I sacrificed my girlfriend and more for you. I will not leave you until you give me something."

"Little child, you dare stand against the great Akpara Ekpe? I shall give your flesh to the birds of the air." The Oracle said in anger.

The past weeks have obviously been stressful for Cyril, having the guts to go against the Oracle takes more than just courage - it takes desperation.

Tension got heated between Cyril and the Oracle, Cyril was not going to take no for an answer he demanded fairness. The Oracle on the hand was one not to be trifled with. Cyril got so angry he rushed towards the Oracle and grabbed him by his arm demanding for his share of greatness - a place in this world. Akpara Ekpe's assistant pounced on him with a blow to head. He fell to ground, tried to lift himself up but there was no more strength left in him for a counterattack. Akpara Ekpe looked down at him and smirked.

"Little boy, I shall not kill you but I must let you know something. This place and everything in it belongs to the spirits of the dead. You ate of their fruit and they will come for you."

Cyril watched as the Oracle walked away towards the path that led out of the forest. He could not move nor stand to his feet, he heard footsteps and the rustling of dried leaves, turned around but saw nothing. He became scared, he felt the wind blowing fiercely towards him, he turned towards were the wind was blowing from and he saw something rushing towards him. He screamed with all his might for help, the sound rang through the forest and then there was absolute quiet - Cyril had slept.

Alice had her first court hearing on the second week of her arrest, she was taken from the cell. She had taken her bath and changed her dress. She got into the court room and the atmosphere felt like hell. Her fate laid in whatever was to be said and how good her lawyer was. If the necessary evidences that could help get her out had been gotten or if the prosecutors bench held more sway.

She looked around and saw the detective, she looked at him and he seemed to smile back at her.

She walked to the bench that her lawyer sat in and sat beside him.

A man with a police uniform - the bailiff - stood just beside where the judge was to sit opposite them. He spoke in a loud voice and said. "All Rise!"
