Capítulo 2: Chapter 2: Karna's birth (Omniscient's POV)
Essos Continent- Sar Mell
Sar Mell was a Rhoynar city that sits on the eastern bank of the Rhoyne river to the north of Volantis in western Essos. Almost directly across the river to the west sits the city of Volon Therys. In this city ancient city, that in originally Asoiaf's history would be destroyed in the Second Spice War, the crown princess Kunti has given birth in secret, while her mother the heir princess of Sar Mell, and her consort Gulian were away touring all the Rhoynar free cities negotiating trade deals.
How this came to be? Did the young princess have some secret affair? The answer is no. It all started nine months ago when the curious girl had of her several adventurous moments of outwitting her guards again. She explored an abandoned old temple dedicated to Mother Rhoyne, there she found a scroll written in the ancient Rhoynar language. It seemed so ancient, that made her wonder how time had not consumed it completely yet. She took that scroll to the palace for her to examine further. While she was alone at the entrance of her small palace with only the sunlight as a companion, she sat in a lotus pose with the scroll in one of her hands and an ancient Rhoynar language's dictionary in another.
"Who made this stupid prank for future generations to suffer translating it? This was supposed to be a water magic scroll, but water magic is not supposed to work like that. This thing will not even work. Even a beginner knows that water magic cannot create life. It is even funny..." she exclaimed.
So, she read this holy scroll. Suddenly, she felt a great influx of magic in herself. But she could not stop somehow. Then, she felt it. In some way, she knew that she was pregnant. The scroll dissolved itself into powder. While this happened, a new energy emerged in Asoiaf's world. None noticed it, but somehow the sun became brighter and started to emanate more power. The Rhoynar would have a new cult appearing, but this was a story for another time.
"How foolish I was, I desecrated a spoken mantra in the name of mother Rhoyne without even suspecting. Please forgive me, great mother of us all." she screamed crying, glad that there was no one to see or hear her around, as she have dispensed the servants a while ago.
She wiped her tears and started to think out loud:
"The spoken mantra was supposed to allow a woman to remain a virgin, and get herself pregnant with the man closest to her. But there was no man close to her. I was sitting in the soil, the earth, that although was not a literal female or goddess, in Rhoyne language we identify sort of identify as her with a feminine article. The sun is not a male god for any of the cultures I know, the closest sun god that I know is the sun goddess that the Yi Ti prays to; but we still use a male article to call the sun." When she said it she felt like the sun was sort of connected to the sun. And when she looked at the sun, it suddenly felt more lively.
Months passed and she stopped traveling outside and lived in her inner palace not bothering to see anyone. Which made her servants worry about her thinking that she was depressed for some reason. Her appetite suddenly increased quite a lot, releasing every possible worry that her subordinates may have with at least her health.
Making some think something along the lines of 'thankfully, young miss is not the type that starts eating less while pregnant.' As a female warrior that was quite muscular, her pregnancy was quite hard to spot, even in the last months. Her pregnancy was quite uneventful, to the point that she could still spear trains even in her last months.
Even though bastards were not looked so much down upon in Rhoynar culture as in the Andalos one and it was common for princes and princesses to have bastards in this liberal culture, being a mother before marriage would surely damage her reputation quite a lot and made marriage prospects much harder.
She felt that today would be the day that she would give birth. So she sneaked out of the city to the point where she usually went to clear her thoughts. It was an abandoned point in the city periphery, with the Rhoyne river at the northeast.
She sat on the dirty earth, with her legs, and a cloth under her pelvic region, and gave birth. So young Karna was born. She used a small aquamarine steel knife she took from the treasury and cut her umbilical cord and tied it to the baby's part so that blood would not start to flow out and kill him. Aquamarine steel is the rhoynar equivalent of valyrian steel.
How did she know how to do this? In one of her sneak-outs, she helped a midwife help a woman give birth. She lifted the child with one of her arms and cleaned herself of the blood with the river water with the other. She unearthed at a marked point a small boat that she crafted before with one hand and was still lifting her child.
Finally, she put the child, covered by the cloth she used to the birth, down at the little boat. She then hid the traces of the hole. She wore clothes on him, but commoner ones. She took out her clothes that were painted in blood, lit a fire, burn it, and buried the ashes hiding their traces.
She unearths a chest with clothing inside exactly equal to the one she was using before. She wore the clothing, buried it again, and hid the traces. Then she pushed the boat at the Rhoyne river, which goes away by a bit, and waited...
"Please, take care of him mother Rhoyne." she prayed.
When her guards and servants were getting closer, she suddenly acted like she heard something and made the crazy decision of throwing herself at the strong waters of the Rhoyne river and starting to swim, the servants and guards became desperate and started to run faster.
If the crown princess, got hurt for sure, at least one of them may lose his head. After a while, she could finally hold with her arms the boat, but the current was too strong for her to be able to get back to the shore. The servants have to get a rowing boat to get Kunti's bag to the land before she got seriously hurt.
"We beg you your highness to not do this again. Although not all of us are young, some are innocent old men and women, who did nothing wrong, and we do not want to die yet. So please be careful next time." one servant bowed his head nearly crying with a bit of relief and fear. The second emotion came to him while thinking about what would have happened to them all if her royal highness Kunti got hurt.
"I am sorry.-She said.-I thought I heard a baby cry and I was right. See this cute thing I found." On earth, her performance could surely win an Oscar.
"Who abandoned their child at the Rhoyne river, when Rhoyne faith has orphanages spread throughout all the Rhoyne free cities to sent them Poor thing. We understand your majesty. Though next time can you be at least a bit less reckless, please?-Said the captain of the guards." I know a good orphanage matron, that is quite caring and a good caretaker, I think we could send the child to her.
She thought that no way in hell she would send the child away after all this troublesome performance.
"I think at this moment I got myself quite attracted to this child I will adopt him." she said feeding the shield with her right breast.
"Your highness will be a mother." the captain asked appearing even more worried."Are you sure?"
"Stop teasing me, captain. I can be a good mother."
"Yes, you can." the captain said trying to show confidence in his words, but falling miserly.
She ignore him, looked at Karna, and said to him:
"Your name shall be Karna."
Strangely for her, the newborn seems to nod in understanding.
