Capítulo 4: Chapter 4

“What is a Shade wolf, what does that mean? Nymia, why did she get out of the car!?”

“Wolves that don’t worship the Moon Goddess like Sara are called Shades, they worship a deity that focuses on darkness and power rather than anything about protecting the natural world. What’s important right now though is you get down and stay in here, I’m going to help Sara. We won’t let anything happen to you.” Nymia said with a determined smile on her face, getting out of the car as Jeremiah crouched in the back seat, hidden but able to still watch what happened.

As she stepped out of the car and walked to stand in front of it next to Sara, she smirked a bit, her fangs elongating slightly and her red eyes glowing a more brilliant crimson. “You dogs are making a mistake, I suggest turning tail.”

Sara rolled her eyes “Enough with the canine based threats, they aren’t going to run. Let’s get this over with.” With that she let out a loud howl as a swirl of moonlight enveloped her body like a chrysalis, after a few seconds it shattered like glass and standing there was now a brilliant pure white wolf, easily the size of a draft horse. Her fur seemed to catch the moonlight and send rivulets of pale light along the road as she stepped forward.

The Shade Wolves seemed to falter slightly at this display, Jeremiah wondered if this was a special type of transformation or if the type of appearance she had marked her as some special kind of shifter? He made a mental note to ask that and many other questions after this.

The moment the first of the black wolves took another step forward, Sara snarled and launched forward with a force that cracked and buckled the street beneath her feet, slamming into her adversary with enough force to knock it to the ground almost instantly. It tried to snap its jaws at her, but she was faster as she clamped her maw on its neck and began squeezing, wrestling it to keep it on the ground as she began to rip its neck.

The other four wolves quickly moved to descend on Sara but Nymia moved like lightning, a swift kick connecting with the rib cage of one of the wolves, sending an echo of cacophonous snaps ringing out across the deserted roadway as it collided with another wolf, as she used the momentum of the kick to spin around as four small droplets of blood seemed to form and fire from her hands like darts, impacting into the other two wolves causing their charge to falter.

Jeremiah looked on with wide eyes as this gave enough time for Sara to bite down one final time, the wolf beneath her shuddered and twitched a moment before falling limp. As Sara brought her head back up from the corpse, a drifting cloud of ash surrounded it before it turned back into a human man no older than Jeremiah. Sara snarled at the two wolves to her left, her once snow-white muzzle was just as red as Nymia’s eyes, slowly dripping blood onto the asphalt beneath them.

The other wolves seemed more hesitant now, three of the wolves began to circle them, staying a bit farther away, while one stayed even further back, limping and breathing raggedly, more than likely nursing multiple cracked or broken ribs. All three of the wolves lunged at once, moving with incredible force and speed, but none quite as fast or powerful as Sara’s first outburst.

Two wolves converged on Sara, circling and weaving around her and one another, nipping and snapping their jaws at her throat or back legs, trying to get her down to the ground. Sara, though, was stronger than the two of them managing to back away or block their attacks with her greater size, knocking them out of the way with a spin or body check as she bites back, tearing into one of their tails with a well timed attack, causing it to roar in pain and try to retreat while the other lunged forward to cover the other.

Meanwhile Nymia was currently dodging the other wolf with little hardship at all, dancing around its strikes almost like this was a game. Jeremiah could hear her laugh and taunt the thing each time it missed her.

“Missed me again!” She said as she dodged another attack, but this time she seemed to plant herself steady, she wasn’t going to dodge this next attack. “Someone should teach you-” The wolf attacked before she could finish, its jaws opening wide to slam down on her, but as it came down, she grabbed it with both of her hands, keeping its mouth from closing.

“I was going to say how to aim this gigantic mouth of yours, but it seems you also need to be taught some manners!” She began pushing the upper jaw further up, and the lower jaw further down, with one final hard push with her incredible vampiric strength, both jaws snapped and with a loud grunt of exertion Nymia threw the body of the wolf like a ragdoll into the injured of the two harassing Sara.

As it made contact with the head of the injured beast it let out a loud whine that was fast cut off as its head slammed into the pavement, both of their wolf forms dissipating into ashen dust.

The distraction gave Sara the opening she needed to get under the neck of her last attack and with a swift and utterly brutal motion, tear the bottom of its throat out leaving it to bleed and splutter for a few moments before collapsing and turning back into a human, just like the others did.

Nymia turned her attention to the other wolf and smirked “I think you should ru-” she was cut off by a bolt of black energy lancing towards her from the wolf’s opening, snarling mouth, piercing into her stomach and straight out the other side.

Nymia screamed out in pain as she fell onto the road, clutching her stomach as Sara raced over to her.

Sara didn’t notice the other wolf preparing another attack, she was so focused on Nymia. Jeremiah’s eyes were wide as he watched “No, no no Sara! Come on, pay attention!” Without even thinking about it he threw open the door to the car and sprinted towards the black furred wolf.

It turned to face him, its red eyes meeting his gaze as Sara looked up and saw him. She let out a loud bark as if to tell him to stop, as the Shade wolf let another bolt of energy fly like a bullet towards him, too fast for Sara to stop.

He threw his hands up at the last moment, cursing how stupid he was, how did he think he would help them!? Now he was just going to die too…but the pain of the attack never came. When he opened his eyes after a second the bolt was hovering in front of him, shuddering and shaking as tendrils of blinding light snaked from his hands and held it like wire.

He shook his hands for a second and without thinking about it the wires vanished but not before a loud twang sounded and the bolt rocketed back towards the Shade wolf, who turned in shock to try to run but was far too slow and was carved nearly in half by its own attack, the remains of its ruined body thrown into a light post at least another twenty feet away as it changed into what was left of a human form.

Sara quickly turned back, her transformation was like snow drifting in the wind, but its beauty was ignored by Jeremiah as he rushed to Nymia’s side. Nymia groaned and let out a few strangled sounds of pain.

“Oh god…that hurts much more than it should…Sara. Sara, is it even healing?” Nymia managed to get out in between labored breaths.

Sara and Jeremiah both look at the hole it left having gone straight through her, and much to Jeremiah’s relief and horror it was healing and closing before his eyes, but it was also leaving black pulsing veins on the flesh.

Sara grabbed her hand and nodded “Yeah, yeah Nym it’s healing. Shade wolf magic has a kind of curse or poison in it, there’s some…weird markings. We’ll handle it ok? You’re gonna be ok.” Sara was nearly sobbing as she reassured her friend.

“Hey…hey no tears…” She said with a shake of her head, “Jeremiah…help me up, I may need to take up the back seat for a while…”

Jeremiah nodded and quickly put an arm behind her and gently lifted to help her sit up, she winced and let out a loud gasp as she finally made it to her feet, Sara supporting her other side as Jeremiah held the other.

“I could get used to you two carrying me around…” Nymia said with a weak laugh.

Jeremiah smiled a bit, but Sara shook her head “Stop joking around, you’re hurt…”

Nymia leaned into her a little as they walked “I’ll be fine…you’ll take care of me, Jeremiah too…” Nymia stared at Sara’s still bloody mouth and neck.

Sara glared for a second “What, why are you staring at me?”

“Have I ever told you red looks good on you?”

Sara blushed and rolled her eyes “Oh shut up…”

Jeremiah laughed with Nymia at Sara’s reaction before opening the door and helping her slide into the seat, making sure there were some bags to support her head like a pillow.

“Thanks…ah god this hurts…Sara, do you mind using some of your moon juju to put me under for a while?” Nymia asked with a half smile, to which Sara nodded.

“Yeah of course…” She walked over and placed a hand on each temple and began softly muttering in a language Jeremiah didn’t understand.

Nymia took his hand and said to Jeremiah “I am gonna be fine, don’t let her freak out, okay? Promise?”

Jeremiah squeezed her hand and nodded “Yeah, I promise Nymia. We’ll make sure you get better…”

Nymia nodded a bit, but her eyes quickly fluttered closed, and she started to breathe evenly. She was asleep, Sara looked at him as a few tears streamed down her cheeks.

“I don’t know if she’s going to make it.”
