I wake up in a great mood, warm and content. Burrowing deeply into the warmth, I feel a happy smile form on my face for three seconds before reality crashes in and my eyes fly open. I stare into gold eyes looking back at me with an expression that is both hopeful and pleading.
"What's the time?" I ask when I notice that it's still dark outside.
"It's not yet morning. Just a bit after 2 am," he tells me.
"Oh."
"You should go back to sleep."
"Right," I say, turning around and closing my eyes.
But I can't sleep because I am too aware of his presence behind me. I know he's not sleeping either because I can feel his nervous energy.
After several minutes of neither of us speaking, I wonder if I should be the one to break the ice.
"Sunshine?" He finally calls, so quietly that I might have missed it.
I turn to face him again, staring dumbly at his handsome face in the dim light. I feel a lump in my throat at the familiar endearment.
"Yes, Kai?" I manage to croak back.
