Varya hated pain but she would permanently scar her flesh if it made him feel better about his jealousy. 

"Why can't I do that?" she asked. "I don't have a fire aura but there are other ways to heat up the metal. I'll do anything to put your mind at ease."

He brushed her wet hair off of her forehead and his lips were in a thin line.

"You were already burnt because of something I did to you," he said. "Why would I want to do that to you again?"

She stared up at him and her expression was serious.

"I'm going to do it," she said. "What's another burn?"

Basileus sighed, regretting telling her about that tradition.
