I Will Eventually Embark on the Path of No Return Called a Hero [Arc2] - 55. Bring Them Happiness

What is hell?

Never-ending despair?

Never-ending slaughter?

No, any place could become hell; hell is different for everyone.

Yet, Cyd and the others could all agree that this is hell!

The Hanging Garden had disappeared. What lay beneath their feet was a road, surrounded by buildings cloaked in a chill and dense fog, the stench of decaying flesh, vomit, and organs enveloping them.

This is hell…

In their eyes, there is no hope—only the struggle to survive for the next second.

Why were they born?

Shouldn't children be the fruit of love? Shouldn't they be born blessed?

Why must they face such things?

If you don't love them, why make them be born!

This is hell.

There are no strong ones in hell; only the wretchedly weak, who abuse each other. And they are the lowest of the weak.

Selling their own bodies to survive—why is there a world where children must sell their bodies to live? Why must they be plundered as well! They are already unfortunate enough!

Atalanta knelt on the ground, holding her head. Dark material spread from her hands towards her core, but her eyes were only on the ragged children before her and everything that was happening.

"I will save you, because I was saved in the same way…"

"Big sister, you're really sly," the cold aura slithered up Atalanta's neck like a snake, "Why were you saved while we can only exist in this world?"

"Come with us."

"Stop talking! I will… save you," Atalanta covered her ears.

But is it really useful?

That era is long past, and they are vengeful spirits eternally bound in that hell. No one can trace back to save them; their era's ugliness is proof they will suffer forever.

"Let this end," Jeanne slowly stood up.

"What do you want to do?" Atalanta looked up.

"Exterminate them."

Even seeing such hell, even knowing these children are merely victims of their era, Jeanne remained unmoved, her calm face showing no pity or sympathy.

"Why!" Atalanta's eyes widened, "Aren't you a saint?"

"I can save lost children, I can purify those still attached to the present world through prayer, but I cannot save Jack the Ripper," Jeanne shook her head, "They have been absorbed by the Servant known as Jack the Ripper. All I can do is defeat them."

"I won't let you do that," Atalanta stood up, "They cannot suffer any more. If you want to kill them, then I will have to kill you. No one protected them in the past; at least now I want to protect them and then save them!"

"You should understand too! These children… are evil spirits, with no names, and no one can save them."

Does she not feel pain?

No! She feels more pain than anyone. If she could save them, she would reach out to hold them. But it is precisely because she wants to save them more than anyone that she understands they cannot be saved.

The painful past is etched into them. For every second they exist, they are tormented by that past.

"I must… destroy them…" Jeanne said firmly, as if compelled.

"Then I can only…" Atalanta tightened her grip on her bow.

"It's time to end this," Cyd raised his head, his left hand gripping the scythe and sweeping it, the black light slicing through the hell.

The stench disappeared, the fog vanished, the children were gone. All that remained was Jack, standing before Cyd with vacant eyes, and Reika Rikudou, holding her tightly with her back towards Cyd.

"You are loved."

Cyd reached out and gently rubbed Jack's head.

"The only thing you must deny is that you are not loved."

"Jack, I'm sorry I'm late," Reika Rikudou cried as she held Jack, her tears falling on Jack's neck.

What is this?

Not blood, not sewage…

Tears, tears shed for them…

"Mom… Mom?" Jack dazedly felt Reiko Rikudou's warmth.

"Yes, it's Mom. Mom will never leave you again," Reiko Rikudou held Jack tightly.

"Mommy… Mommy! I'm so scared!" Jack opened her mouth, letting the small knife fall to the ground as she clung tightly to Reiko Rikudou and cried, "I'm so scared we'll be abandoned. No one loves us!"

"Don't cry, Mommy won't cry either. Mommy will always be by your side," Reiko Rikudou tried to smile, but the tears wouldn't stop.

"Even though it's late, I'm here now," Cyd said with a light smile, "This time, I've come to save you."

The black scythe was slowly raised, the intense death energy starting to spread.

"Your existence is wrong. You should be loved, but the past hell is firmly binding you. But don't worry, I will send you to true hell."

Reiko Rikudou looked panicked, but Jack calmed down, looking at Cyd with innocent eyes.

"Big brother, do you want to kill us?"

"Yes. You should no longer suffer. You've endured enough pain," Cyd said softly, "I will send you to hell, where you can leave all your pain behind and no longer live as Jack the Ripper."

"No… don't kill Jack!" Reiko Rikudou picked up Jack and tried to run, but Cyd's words stopped her.

"You've seen that hell. Do you want Jack to stay there?"

"Mommy, it's okay," Jack tilted her head and smiled, "As long as Mommy is with us, hell doesn't matter."

"Please…" Reiko Rikudou bit her lip and knelt before Cyd, holding Jack, "Save Jack."

She saw it—a hellish illusion. But she knew it was a shackle engraved deep in Jack's soul. As long as Jack continued to exist as Jack, this shackle would keep causing her pain.

She actually understood, just unwilling to admit it…

"Yes, I have heard your wish."

Cyd swung down the scythe, no blood splattering. The black light swept gently over Jack's small body. The Command Seal on Reiko Rikudou's hand disappeared, and Jack in her arms began to disintegrate. Countless children in tattered clothes appeared around her, but their eyes, once void of light, now glowed. They gathered around Reiko Rikudou, smiling at her.

"Thank… you…"

"It's really… so good to meet you…"

"Mommy."

Jack disappeared, and the surrounding children also vanished.

"Ahhhhh…"

Reika Rikudou clung to the vanishing light as if she were going mad, but no matter how she embraced it, the light continued to slip from her arms, finally collapsing weakly on the ground.

"My… child…"

Jeanne looked dazedly at Cyd's back.

"You must live with a smile," Cyd extended his hand to Reika Rikudou.

"They have reached hell, waiting to truly live."

"Live hard, find someone who loves you, build a beautiful family with them, and then let them be born again, fulfilling their wishes."

Reika Rikudou's eyes widened.

"They want love, so give it to them. Let them be born into the happiest family in the world, let their most beloved mother give birth to them, and let them grow up happily."

Cyd took Reika Rikudou's hand and pulled her up.

"This is also your wish, isn't it?"
