You shrugged your EMT jacket on as your partner drove fast, tying your hair back. You prepared yourself for what was to come. You had been assigned as an extra ambulance to Firehouse 51 for the time being. Boden asked for you and your partner to stay back while the others began to race inside.
Pulling up that the scene, you jumped out and gathered your gear. People ran towards you, and you began to access what needed to be done. You helped those that were outside. "Stay safe!" You screamed to your older brother, Kelly Severide, as Squad began to enter. He waved a hand in your general direction.
The building was leaking smoke, there was flickering of orange and black shadows, even at your far away spot you could feel the heat. You helped those who had been injured that were outside. You kept an eye on the fire, and an ear on your radio listening out for your brother. Boden was pacing, still in his suit from his wedding. The white rose and the flowing white fabric that was still attached to the trucks seemed out of place. There was a clacking on the radio, Severide getting everyone to fall back. Then there was a moment, a silent moment where nothing happened. Suddenly the inside of the building exploded. You were blown back, as was your partner, Boden was also knocked off his feet. You all stood, the dust caked itself into every sliver of skin it could find. Boden's black jacket was greying with the dust. You looked into the building where dust had only just finished pouring out of the door.
"Kelly!" Your broken scream cracked the air and you began to race towards the building, your partner reached for your arm, but you slipped past her. Boden caught you, he pulled you back. "You can't go in there." Boden's strong voice shock a little.
You choked back a sob, your partner called your name, getting your attention. "Need you over here." You felt Boden's arms loosen but not leave you until you headed back to help. It felt like hours, listening to the crackle of the radio, nothing but static. Then you heard it the best sound you had heard in what felt like months. Your brother calling the Squad and the team into action. After a short while some exited, some helping Mills who had a broken leg. You and your partner began to tend to him. Your hands shook as you helped Mills, you looked over at the door, which had smoke pouring out of it.
Soon you saw Gabby exit with her patient, Casey helping her with a couple of squad members. Your brother soon left the building with smoke trailing in his wake, he was helping Shay who had a bleeding headwound but otherwise seemed unharmed. You paused, "Go." You looked over at Mills, "She's hurt and he's your brother. Go." You ripped your gloves off and grabbed your spare bag, racing to your brother and friend. You hesitated when you reached them, but your instincts took over and you snapped on gloves beginning to help Shay. You sat her down by one of the trucks and gave your brother a lingering look that conveyed your relief he was still alive. After you patched up Shay, you switched gloves and checked your brother over. Once you finished, you flung yourself into his arms, the heavy smell of smoke filled your nose. You sobbed in relief, his arms wrapped themselves tightly around you.
