Capítulo 90: Chapter 89: Trial

What she said picked up Jackson's interest.

"What do you mean?" he asked.

"If I'm not mistaken, the Wraith represents all the gangs and mafias in the city. The Wraith had a treaty with the city government. They wouldn't allow them to kill as they pleased."

The three men inside the car were speechless!

What she said was true. However, not everyone knew about this.

How did she know about this, then?

"How did you know about the Wraith?" Xavier asked his wife.

The other two were listening in anticipation.

Zarah was caught off-guard. She had a slip of the tongue.

"Someone told me about it," she explained briefly. She didn't want to disclose the identity of the person.

"Don't worry. I trust the person." She didn't disclose the gender of that person, which frustrated Xavier.

She wanted it to be a mystery.

"Let us focus on the assassin's identity first. The assassin is not from Oakridge City," she changed the topic.

"I'll consider your theory, Zarah." Jackson didn't eliminate Zarah's theory.

"Anyways, I suggest you stay at home, for now, Master Xavier," Jackson suggested.

"Staying at home is for the cowardly," he coldly replied.

"Aren't you afraid that they might get you next time?" Jackson asked in both worry and curiosity.

"They have to take the bait to be caught. I'm not afraid of them, Jackson."

How could they catch the big fish if he would hide? He was the bait. He would lure them out.

Xavier did not reach this level of success by hiding from those threats.

"Right! I have forgotten who you are," Jackson commented. He looked at Zarah subconsciously.

He was unsure if Zarah was aware of Xavier's dark side.

Zarah pursed her lips as she listened to what Jackson was saying.

"Are you already tired of looking after me? Just say it. I'll look for someone better than you," Xavier coldly said to cut him off.

He had not told Zarah this side of him yet. He was on the stage of slowly revealing this side of him to her. Jackson's words might shock Zarah.

Zarah might divorce him should she find out he belonged to the underworld.

Meanwhile, Jackson felt troubled. Should he do that, Jackson would lose his position.

'D*mn you dummy! Idiot! I was only looking after your best interest!' Jackson cursed inwardly.

"It's not what you think, Master Xavier. You're not as invincible as you think. Do you want Zarah to be a young widow?"

What Jackson said managed to knock some sense in Xavier.

He looked at his wife, and he could see her eyes turning red.

Zarah was so scared earlier. The thought of losing Xavier pained her heart. And so, what Jackson said reminded her of what she felt during the shootout.

Xavier pulled her closer and gave her a tight hug. He wanted to comfort her.

"Did it scare you?" he asked her softly.

"I'm more scared of losing you, Husband. I want to grow old with you. I don't want to be a young widow," she honestly said.

That word had not crossed her mind before. She hated that word now.

"You won't be a young widow. I promise you that," Xavier reassured her while caressing her back. He was also glaring at Jackson for spouting nonsense.

Zarah swore that she would not let herself be a young widow. She now had a mission to protect her man. She was even more determined to find the assassin.

Her expression turned cold, and she wanted blood.

The temperature in the car dropped drastically.

"Is the heater not working?" Chris mumbled. However, he was shocked to see the cold aura wrapping the hugging couple.

He could feel the strong sense of bloodlust coming from the couple.

It was understandable to see this from Xavier. However, he least expected to see this from Zarah.

The scene ruined the angel image he had for Zarah.

"We should double your security details," Jackson suggested while ignoring the affectionate couple.

"My security details are good. What I need now is permission from the leader of Wraith."

What he said was not only meant for Jackson but also Chris.

"We're still working on it, Master. Wraith had not answered our emails yet," Chris explained.

Zarah could feel Xavier's sigh in their hug.

Xavier looked at his watch and saw that the trial was about to start.

He broke off the hug and asked Jackson, "I have a court trial to attend this afternoon. And I'll attend it."

Meanwhile, Dwight received a call from Antonio. "The sniper failed to execute the mission. The subject had become aware of the assassination attempt. Hence, it would be hard to kill him next time," Antonio reported.

Dwight was infuriated to know this.

"Do something, Antonio! I'll pay him twice or thrice the agreed amount. He must do it today!"

Antonio hung up, leaving him furious.

He threw his phone on the tiled floor and broke his phone.

"Professor Dawson, are you okay?" The male student asked in concern.

Dwight adjusted his mood and forced himself to smile.

"I'm okay."

Then, he left the place to report to his next class.

Hope happened to bump into him in the hallway.

The documents that Hope was carrying in her hand had fallen on the floor.

"I'm sorry." Hope immediately apologized without looking at him.

She was looking down when the collision happened. She knew she was at fault.

Professor Dawson ignored her apologies and left. He didn't even help in picking up her things.

Hope did not mind his rude attitude.

Back in the courtroom, everyone was preparing for the trial to start.

The jury started occupying their seats. Xavier was sitting with his lawyers while Zarah stayed on the bench behind him.

"Don't worry," she reassured him before giving him a comforting hug.

The judge entered, and the trial began.

"All rise!"

Both the lawyer and the prosecutor had their opening arguments yesterday. It was now time to call in the witnesses.

First to take the stand was the police, who responded to the abduction.

Both sides had the chance to ask questions to the witness.

The prosecutor also submitted the omitted police report as evidence.

The next to take the witness stand was Xavier.

Zarah focused her attention on Xavier. She didn't want to miss any detail.

The prosecutor asked him before the defendant cross-examined him.

"Can you please state your name?" Xavier's lawyer asked.

"Xavier Lockhart."

"Address?"

"*** Oakridge City."

"How are you related to the case?"

"I was the victim of the abduction incident which happened *** years ago. I am also the son who lost his mother because of them."

"When you mean by them, are you referring to the defendants of this case?" the prosecutor asked, and the defense lawyer objected.

"Objection, leading!"

"Sustained!" the judge said.

"Are the mastermind of your abduction present in court?" he changed the question.

"Yes," Xavier confirmed.

"Can you point them out for the jury to see?"

Xavier did not hesitate to point at them.

"Mr. Lockhart, can you please narrate what happened that day for the jury to know?"

Xavier started narrating the events that happened that day.

He could hear gasps from the audience, especially after he narrated how gruesome the incident was.

It was so cruel for a child to witness.

However, they knew that they should listen to the other party, too.

"That's all, your honor."

The defense lawyer then cross-examined him.

"Mr. Lockhart, are you certain that the defendants are the people behind your abduction and the death of your mother?"

"I'm a hundred percent sure that it's them that day," Xavier answered firmly.

"You stated under oath that you were from the hospital when it happened. Are you certain that you're not hallucinating that time?"

"Objection, leading!"

"Your honor, this is very important for my clients. Please allow the witness to answer it," he said.

"On what grounds?"

"Due to doctor-patient confidentiality, I could not ask for his records from his doctor. So, I asked my friend, who's a doctor, about Mr. Lockhart's condition. He explained that patients like Mr. Lockhart had a high dosage of medication. And one of the effects was a hallucination."

Everyone gasped.

"That is true," Xavier admitted.

"The medicine used to treat my illness made me hallucinate. However, my mom asked my doctor to find another treatment plan. I was off the medication for a month."

That was why he had gone weaker.

"Then, may I ask your doctor to attend as a witness in the next session."

"He can't."

"May I know why?"

"He passed away days after the abduction."

"Then, can we ask for your medical records?"

"The hospital where I had been staying caught on fire. The fire burned my medical records," Xavier answered.

Everyone gasped in shock.

Meanwhile, Carla Kent smirked. She thought this was the loophole in the case.

It was not hard to guess who was behind that fire.

"However, we managed to find the culprit behind the fire. He's willing to testify against the person who paid him," Xavier dropped the bombshell.

"Carla Kent also paid my doctor to misdiagnose my illness."

"Mr. Lockhart, it's illegal to slander someone in court," the judge intervened.

"Judge Martin, I'm not slandering her. I have evidence."

The prosecutor representing Xavier got up to submit the evidence to the judge which was then presented to the jury.
