Capítulo 7: Monster extermination
Three days ago Vernos revitalized the land. After that, he gave some instructions and went into seclusion to break through to 3-star magic apprentice. As you advance in stages it gets harder to break through. Even though Vernos had the best cultivation technique it still took him three days to break through to a 3-star magic apprentice.
These past three days Lucas was training the army. He passed on the imperial knight technique to the troops. Using the technique all of them broke through at least one star. The talented ones broke through two stars.
Vernos planned to develop a mage unit in the future. Mages are harder to find and train. Usually, only viscounts or higher would have mages in their territories.
The land in his territory is full of monsters. The only path that was clear and safe to travel was too red city. Every once in a while the troops would go out and clear the area full of monsters. There was no road to red city as it would be too expensive to build a road. Today he plans to hire citizens to work on a road from Vermont city to the sea. Vernos first needed to take the army to clear the way. They won't be able to build the road until the monsters are exterminated.
The monsters aren't very strong so even though most of the troops haven't reached the first stage they can still deal with them. For the trip, he brought one thousand troops and split them into 10 groups of 100. Every group would have a stage 2 great knight leading them. He also sent a mage apprentice with each group.
Mages are useful in many ways. They can support knights and cast large areas of attack spells to easily kill large groups of monsters. Mage apprentices don't have any large area of attack spells and they can only cast simple spells and support spells.
"My lord, a group of wind wolves are approaching." A soldier hurriedly reported. Vernos group had the high combat power out of every group. Lucas was here to make sure nothing went wrong and Vernos was safe.
These wind wolves are stage 0 beasts that can use wind magic. Beasts like knights and mages also had stages. Wind wolves individually are not a problem but, they hunt in groups. In this group of wind wolves, there were 5 wolves.
"SQUAD ONE ENGAGE!" The stage 2 great knight called out. Vernos wanted the troops to get combat experience. If all one hundred soldiers attacked the group of wolves it wouldn't be a challenge and they wouldn't learn anything, so he split the group into 10 squads.
Seeing ten soldiers coming out to attack the wolves pounced on the nearest one. The soldiers worked together to parry the attack. Seeing that the attack didn't work the wolves fell back and used wind blades. Since the wolves were only stage 0 the wind blade was slow and easily dodgeable. It didn't take long before the wind wolves were quickly defeated. The soldiers had no injuries but they were tired from continually dodging.
After a quick rest, the group packed the wolves' corpses and continued forward. Beast meat is very nutritious, the fangs can be used to make weapons and the hide can be used to make clothes. Every part of the beast's corpse is valuable. Higher stage beasts have beast cores that are worth thousands of gold coins but the beast has to be above stage 3 for a chance.
After fighting 3 more packs of wind wolves the scout found a group of goblins. Goblins are like humans but their skin is green and they have low intelligence. Normal goblins are stage 1 monsters. Sometimes if a goblin group is advanced enough a goblin mage, goblin berserker, or other special types can show up. According to the report, this group of goblins had a stage 2 goblin mage and 15 stage 1 goblin spearmen. This would be a tough challenge for the current troops unless Lucas steps in.
"Lucas don't interfere unless you have to." Vernos wanted to take this opportunity to train his troops. Most of his troops are stage 0 so this will be a tough challenge even with the number advantage. Mages are stronger than knights at the same level so the stage 2 group leader will have a hard time fighting the goblin great mage without support.
"Implement rotation tactics to wear the goblins down." The stage 2 group leader named John quickly gave orders.
"Minor shield"
"Speed enchantment"
Vernos and the mage apprentice started using support spells. Sadly these spells are only single target or these goblins would be much easier. The target of the spells was naturally John.
"Fight me you ugly green monster!" John yelled as he ran towards the goblin mage. The goblin mage wasn't stupid and threw fireball spells while retreating. This slowed John down but it wasn't enough to stop him. Seeing this the spearmen stepped forward to stop John. Of course, the soldiers wouldn't let them and quickly moved to intercept them.
Even though goblins were one of the weakest monsters the stage difference made it hard for the soldiers to relax. One mistake would cost them their lives.
"AHHHH" One soldier screamed as one of the goblin's spears impaled him in the stomach.
"Be careful!" Another one screamed as he moved to protect his comrade.
One soldier quickly used the opening the goblin left to cut off his arm. Another didn't miss this opportunity to cut off its head. After one goblin died the soldiers that were fighting it moved to assist the other soldiers. Using the momentum they finished one goblin after another and quickly finished them all off. All that was left was the stage 2 goblin mage.
"Quicksand!" Vernos didn't disappoint and used a spell that normally can only be used by stage 1 mages.
Everyone was surprised, they didn't expect vernos to use a stage 1 spell. Especially the goblin, it didn't sense any stage 1 mage so it got caught in the trap.
John didn't let this opportunity pass and quickly rushed to cut off its head.
"Finally! We did it!"
"Hooray!"
The soldiers started cheering.
"Enough clean up and move before more monsters come!" Vernos knew that the soldiers were happy but he couldn't let them stay here.
This was a good victory they beat a tough enemy with only minor injuries, the most injured was the soldier that was impaled by a spear.
"Soldier, what is your name?" Vernos asked the soldier who was injured.
"Sir, my name is Bryan." Soldiers on the battlefield usually called their noble sir instead of lord because he is in command of the army.
"Ok Bryan, I am gonna use a minor healing spell on you it might sting a little bit but it will stop the bleeding" Vernos didn't wait for a reply and directly used the spell.
"AHHHHHHHHH!" Bryna screamed, the wound was pretty big and the healing spell directly closed it so it hurt, a lot.
