“Sorry it took us so long to get here,”Miles said as he and Asher stood blinking in the light of a thousand candles.
“Ah, our witnesses,” grinned James.
“Witnesses,” Asher stepped forward. “What did we miss?”
Miles caught sight of Caden and Edith, still standing together holding hands and stared. A look of understanding growing quickly on his face.
“What did you do?” he looked at Caden. His eyes grew wide, “Did you…get married?”
Asher grinned like it was his birthday, “Married? Caden?”
Edith could see a tide of emotions flood Miles’ mind. He was half-smiling as he approached his friend.
Miles politely took Edith’s hand, saying, “Congratulations.”
He then turned to Caden, placing a hand on his friend’s arm.
“My dear friend,” she heard him say. “I am happy for you, but … are you mad? Are you sure this is what you want? You know the consequences, does she? Can you truly be happy as she ages and you stay the same? Are you willing…”
