Caden waited for Edith’s nod before opening the tall dark door.
No sound came from outside, but there was a dim light that highlighted the sky.
Edith stepped through the doorway into the front garden of the Tenebris Domus, also known as the dark house of Byrne. From a sky the color of the deepest ocean, shone a dull silver moon. Its light fell on a cobblestone path leading from the door through the garden to a tall, iron gate. There were smaller paths shooting off from the main walk, lined with black-flowering plants and shrubs. The manor and garden were surrounded by dull grey stone walls.
“It is nothing like your world,” Caden began, “...But this is where I am doomed to wander in my darkest times.”
Glowing like an oil lamp low on fuel, Edith looked out over the cold garden, “Is there anything that can be done?”
Caden stared at the woman he loved, “You must not be serious…”
