I sat in Baset's lecture hall in my seat neat to Jane and Iris, impatiently tapping my feet while the class waited for Baset to enter the room. While it wasn't normal for Baset to not be waiting at her desk when we walked in, it wasn't the reason why I was so impatient.
The reason for that was the evos that had been growing steadily for the last three days back at the lab. When I checked in them the next morning, the small little blobs of flesh had grown into an infant version of the Ogrest, Void Drake, and Primordial. To say I was excited was putting it mildly, I was pretty sure my joyful screams could be heard all over campus. When I came back to check on them the next day, they were even bigger, and mid adolescents was a fair guess. Yesterday, they looked to be almost fully grown when I checked up on them and added more reagents to the maturation tank. I would have gotten them out this morning, but I didn't want to have to rush. I was regretting that decision now as all I could think about was those evos.
"Chase, calm down! You're making me nervous." Iris commented, then nudged me with her elbow. I frowned but stopped tapping my leg.
"Sorry. Just need today to be over with already." I apologized. Damon snickered softly to himself and shook his head.
"This nervousness wouldn't have something to do with the fact that your duel with Jane is only a week away and as far as we can tell you haven't created a new splicing technique like you so boldly claimed you would." He heckled.
"Damon, don't start. You should know by now not to goad Chase so much, next thing you know he's going to come to the duel with a army of evos all just as strong as that newly evolved one of his." Astrid chastised Damon.
"Yeah, I doubt I can make something that strong right off the bat. The only reason's that strong is because he's a true transcended evo." I said with sigh.
"And to think it was only a few months ago he didn't even have a evo…" Iris groaned. "…now he has a whole host of them."
The door to the lecture hall suddenly burst open, and Baset came barreling onto the hall like she had a demon on her tail with Bo following close behind her. She quickly made her way to her desk while Bo took his seat between me and me.
"Sorry about the wait. Apparently, not all of the guardsmen were notified about Bo's status at the school and detailed him at the gate." Baset apologized as she started looking for something on her desk. "While that problem has been rectified, another has popped up that I need to attend to immediately, so I am giving everyone a study hall today. You are free to go anywhere within this tower except the floors above my office. However, you are not allowed to leave before class ends. Take this time to go over what we went over last class or do some independent study."
"Oh, come on! Can I just leave, I have really important stuff to do today?" I asked with a groan.
"No, no one can leave until after class, especially you, Chase." Baset said immediately.
"What? Why me especially?" I exclaimed. Baset found what she was looking for on the desk and smiled as she picked it up and walked back up the stairs towards the door.
"Does this have to do with that Paragon woman that wanted to fight Chase?" Bo asked.
"Paragon woman?!" Everyone in class exclaimed. Baset stopped just as she was about to reach the door, then sighed and dropped her head.
"What Paragon woman? Is he talking about The Morgan?" I asked, standing up from my seat. Baset turned around to face the class and nodded.
"Yes. She's here at the school demanding a formal duel against you." Baset replied. Jane, Iris, Damon, and Astrid all paled at those words and looked to me.
"Well then let me at the bitch, I'll knock her out and we can get on with our lives." I said flexing an arm. It is grabbed me by my shoulder and spun me around.
"It's not that simple Chase! A Paragon is demanding a formal duel against you! Duels involving a Paragon are different than a duel between two normal splicers! They're to the death!" Iris exclaimed.
"WAIT! WHAT?!" I yelled.
"Which is why I need to defuse this situation. The Morgan is currently with the dean who is trying to persuade her to not go through with this. Honestly the last thing I need right now is one of my students killing a paragon…another Paragon!" Baset groaned. Bo froze and looked up at Baset.
"What do you mean another Paragon?" Bo asked. Iris patted Bo on the and smiles innocently at him.
"Just pretend you didn't hear that…unless you want to be an accessory after the fact." Iris said.
"Accessory to what? I heard nothing." Bo said quickly.
"Chase, please stay inside the tower." Baset said.
"I will, I will." I groaned then plopped back down in my seat. "The last thing I need or want is to deal with that woman again."
"Thank you. Bo if you want to study some more the library is on the fifth floor." Baset said. With that Baset walked out the door and left the class to our "study hall".
"Why is it always something with you?" Astrid groaned as she stood up and walked up to the lecture hall door.
"Where are you going?" Damon asked.
"To the splicing floor, we still have a evo we need to make for the Grand Royale at the end of the year. Figured I might as well do those exercises that Lady Baset taught us." Astrid said then walked out the door.
"Wait for me!" Damon called out as he ran after her leaving The girl, Bo, and me alone.
"What are you two going to do?" I asked. Jane stood up and walked up to the door.
"I'm going to use the training room upstairs. This new evo I spliced needs a little more coaching before our duel." Jane said.
"Gotcha." I said. Jane paused at the door and turned to look at me.
"I know better than to count you out after everything we've been through Chase but you know you are going to lose, right? Techno-splicing is Inferior to traditional, no matter what you…or anyone else says. Trying to combine the two will only result in Inferior evos." Jane said.
"Yeah. I know it's inevitable!" I sighed dramatically as I leaned back against our table and struck a pose like a fighting damsel. Jane groaned and turned to leave. Iris stood up and started after Jane.
"…good luck…" Iris whispered softly as she passed me.
Soon only Bo and I were left in the lecture hall. I was about to ask Bo what he was going to do when I saw him pulling a book out of his backpack. I was surprised to see that the book was titled Lysdale script, an introduction to the world of techno-splicing. The book had several bookmarks in it and looked like it had been used frequently recently.
"You're learning lysdale script?" I asked then motioned to the book. Bo nodded then opened the book to one of the bookmarks.
"You said that lysdale script was how you planned out your evos so I figured of I learned it I could better plan put my evos and maybe one day get better at splicing." Bo said.
"Awww…" I said looking down at him. Bo frowned and pointed at me accusingly.
"Don't aw me! I'm doing this to get better than you not to be like you!" Bo exclaimed. I chuckled then sat on the edge of the table.
"Sure whatever you say man." I said then scooted back on the table and crossed my legs so I was in a meditative pose. "You need any help understanding something just shake me. In the mean time I'm going to visit my evos for a bit. When class is over shake me." I said then closed my eyes.
I focused on my farm crystal and the space where my evos inhabited and was pulled there almost instantly this time. When I opened my eyes I found myself inside the station with my five evo doorways in front of me. I walked over to the golden doorway with the Chinese esthetic and blank name plate and stepped inside it.
I was transported to a massive throne room looking space. I stood at the bottom of a jade staircase that seemed to stretch into the heavens. Every five steps stood a massive jade pillar that had gold etching depicting some heroic looking figure.
As I walked up the stairs I saw a scene start to play out in the figures on the pillars. It showed a young man bowing before a emperor or queen, hard to tell with the etchings. The young man is then shown performing a ritual that I quickly realized was splicing, it shows the young man bringing a divine gold qolitz into being.
As I neared the top of the staircase the young man's image became darker and less shiny, he was depicted talking with people who were made with black stone. Corrupt people I realized. As his images went on they became darker and more warped until they depicted him talking with another figure in black stone, him now completely black as well, with a divine gold qolitz in a cage.
When I reached the top of the stairs I saw my new evo laying elegantly on what could only be described as a golden throne. It was actually a nest however the twigs that made the base were made of solid gold. Stuffed between the twigs were swaths of luxurious silks in regal golds and reds. A canopy of solid Jade covered this nest fit for an Empress as an emerald light shined down on the occupant.
The divine gold qolitz sat at attention, it's long, sharp peacock like tail feathers curled around it's body, in an attempt to hide the healed yet scarred nubs where her once majestic wings stood. Still despite this she looked regal with her golden feathers glistening in the light. The divine gold qolitz eyes widened when they set on me and she stood up even straighter.
[My Lord!] She exclaimed.
"Hey I came to check on you and see how you were doing. Sorry I haven't checked in much." I said. The divine gold qolitz shook her head.
[No worries my lord! General Alpa'nagia has informed me of the various responsibilities that you are in charge of and at times you will be silent to us but that it doesn't mean you've forgotten your soldiers!] She said.
'Soldiers? Is that how she sees herself.' I thought.
"The pictures that are on the pillars…are they showing how you ended up in the possession of that splicer at the evo fights?" I asked motioning behind me. The divine gold qolitz nodded and chirped.
[My creator was once a good man but he became corrupted by greed and sold me to a scoundrel before he fled our home country.] She said then looked away. [I lost my respectability, my purpose…my wings. All because of that man's greed.]
"Well I'm not sure about your respectability but I can give you back a purpose and your wings." I said. The divine gold qolitz eyes widened yet again.
[My wings? How?] Divine gold qolitz asked.
[Body modification, I can alter your genetics to heal them however your appearance will change and possible your size.] I said.
[Oh! This is the great mergence that The general and commander told me about.]
"Great mergence?" I asked inquisitively.
[General Alpa'nagia said that you altered his DNA, selflessly adding your own to ease his pain and it was this mergence that changed his appearance.]
'So they've been calling it a mergence? Why do I feel that name came around just so Alpa'nagia can tease Bone-lasher about not being a transcended evo...?' I thought.
"I see…" I said aloud.
[I am unworthy of such a honor my lord.] The divine gold qolitz said lowering her head in a bow. If she still had her wings I bet the bow would have looked much more elegant.
"I see it as less of a honor and more of a necessity. My evos are my responsibility and if one is injured it's my job as their splicer to do all I can to heal them." I said as I approached. The divine gold qolitz eyes lit up at my words. As I neared her I placed my hand on her head and started channeling mana into her body. "Let's see if we can't have you looking like an Empress again."
I closed my eyes and let my mana scan her DNA and translate it into a lysdale script. While I couldn't see the damage translated into the divine gold qolitz genes I knew what had been missing and damaged thanks to my mana. Looking over the script I thought about what would be the best way to alter the divine gold qolitz genes.
'Quail, porcupine, and peacock dna…I see…let's try this….' I thought.
I channeled some of my own DNA into the divine gold qolitz genetic sequences. The sudden insertion did what I had hoped and blew open the completed sequences. Using my mana I prevented them from completely unraveling and closed the ones that I thought didn't need any adjustment.
I suddenly remember that I had scanned some of those blood samples that I had obtained from that gangster hideout and that one of the samples I scanned was the harpy eagle. I found the sequences for wing span, size of wings, as well as number of wings and used them to alter the divine gold qolitz sequences for the same.
On a whim I added more four more sequences for wings and increased the size of said wings. As I increased the size of its wings the size of the divine gold qolitz body increased as well. I plugged in my DNA, I saw the same redundant gene sequence pop up from Alpa'nagia and Grimm-Guard. The same gene sequence that I now knew was the sequence for the mana crystal.
On another whim I altered the sequence for the mana crystal. I saw a few genes that looked similar to one's found in the gallbladder and appendix, two redundant organs, and picked them out. Replacing them with genes for increased size and a custom one that I hoped would increase capacity. When I was done I checked over my work and made sure that I didn't leave any sequences open. When I was double sure I had closed then all I stopped channeling mana and opened my eyes.
I was suddenly knocked back by gust heated wind that felt like it singed the hairs on my arms. I quickly jumped to my feet in tike to see the divine gold qolitz nest erupt into flames and a column of fire engulfed the canopy. The flames suddenly shot out in a wave from the nest revealing the new divine gold qolitz.
It was now more than twice the size it was before, at least six feet tall. It had six golden wings that glowed with embers of flames. It's tail feather now held a mixture of red and gold feathers, they looked sharper and more lithe and even though she was flying they were spread open showing off a majestic plumage. It's head, which has been more peacock like before, now looked more like the harpy eagle that I replaced a lot of the genes with.
The Devine gold qolitz slowly descended back down to its nest which was still slightly on fire. She folded her wings and looked down at me with a look of reverence and respect then bowed to me.
"My Lord…I…I can't believe…" The divine gold qolitz gasped as she unfolded her wings and looked at all six. Her voice was regal and smooth as silk.
"A look truly befitting a Empress…hmmm….Empress…that's what I'll name you, Empress." I said walking back up to Empress nest.
"Empress…" Empress stood at attention and snapped her wings open and made a elaborate gesture with them before folding them back closed, the divine gold qolitz version of a salute. "…I shall do my best to live up to your expectations my lord!"
"I'll be counting on you, I tried a few new things when I modified your body. I can sense mana coming from you so that means they worked." I said.
"Mana?" Empress asked.
"The energy that I was just using. You can use it too now thanks to a crystal that is just behind your heart. Of all my evos only you and Alpa'nagia can use it right now but I plan to change that eventually. In order to do that I'll need you to become proficient at using mana." I said. Empress nodded in understanding.
"Yes my lord. I will do my best to master this new power you gave me!" Empress said.
"CHASE! COME ON! CLASS IS OVER!" A voice boomed around me.
"Just in time." I said looking up at the ceiling.
Evo Fact: The Skuzard is an evo that is commonly used by splicing tribes in eastern Africa. It was an odd combination of a hyena and a great African Condor. It was mainly used for hunting and travel. Being over nine feet tall, they were perfect to transport. They have a very thin later of skin that is nearly transparent but also surpsingly tough. Able to withstand the claws of a lion, which they usually hunt. Skuzzards are a common sight in eastern Africa as the means to splice them was lost.
