Hiro Akatsuki was an eighteen yeard old esper. He lived in a two-bedroom apartment with his father, stepmother, elder biological sister, and a step-sister. While his step-sister was kind toward him, his father and stepmother hated him because he resembled his dead mother. The school was adamant, as his powers were seemingly to create low-level illusions, so he was a constant subject of bullying by other espers.
*Two days before a disaster.*
Hiro walked to school together with his step-sister Jane. He wore a pair of black jeans and a white tank top. She wore a blue dress, a light pink blazer, and flats. They reached their destination just in time for school to start, which Jane liked because it meant more time to spend without any family drama.
Hours went by, and Hiro found a letter in his locker from the cutest girl in his class, Erika. Before they entered high school, she was his friend, but after entering high school, she found new friends and became distant.
"Huh?" Hiro looked down at the letter and noticed it was written on lined paper. He opened the envelope, but nothing came out. There was nothing else inside besides a few crumpled pieces of paper that he quickly realized belonged to his math homework. It read, 'I love you! Please go out with me.' In neat, elegant handwriting.
As the bell rang, signaling the end of the school day, Hiro took out his phone, texted Erika, and asked to meet up. She agreed and asked to meet up on the roof of the school.
The school itself was on the top of the business building, which was a thousand meters skyscraper. So it felt a little weird for her to ask him to meet her on the top of the building as Hiro feared heights, and she knew that.
But decided to take his chance and go there anyway.
Hiro made his way to the top floor, where a staircase led to the roof, and saw the blonde guy talking to a girl with a smile on his face. When the two of them saw Hiro, they began to giggle.
Something isn't right. Hiro thought as he got a bit nervous. When he reached the roof, he saw Erika. She wasn't alone. There were about twenty people around her, including some of his classmates.
"What is the meaning of this?" Hiro asked, raising an eyebrow. He tried to look intimidating, but he was sure that he looked like a puppy trying to be scary. The group laughed again, and Erika said, "Well... This was supposed to be our date, but we decided it didn't feel quite right. But..." Erika started. "... I have changed my mind. You can stay here."
They began mocking him again, making fun of his height. Some of his classmates started laughing.
"Why are you doing this?!"
Hiro yelled. He turned to walk away when another boy stepped forward and grabbed Hiro's shoulder. Hiro tried to yank his arm away but couldn't because the boy had a grip on him too tight.
Suddenly, Hiro could see the sky and the sun behind his back. His breath caught in his throat. He wanted to scream.
Erika stood next to the boys. He could still hear her voice. "Jacob said, if I do this, he will be my boyfriend!" She exclaimed.
The boys cheered and laughed while Jacob smiled. Jacob then whispered something to the others. They nodded, and one of them put his arm around Erika, pulling her against his chest. She giggled. Jacob then spoke louder and pointed at Hiro.
Hiro gasped, looking at Jacob.
"Sorry, Hiro," Erika said, placing her hand gently on Hiro's. "But I love Jacob."
Hiro glanced at Jacob. He saw Jacob smirking and shook his head lightly. He could feel tears forming in his eyes, and he shouted angrily.
"Who the fuck said I wanted to date you?!" Hiro yelled in anger. He tried to pull away, but Jacob's friend kept holding him captive. "I came here to reject your love!" Hiro pulled out her letter and threw it at her feet with 'NO!' written. "Go screw yourself! And everyone else! Fuck off!" Hiro screamed.
When she saw that Hiro had written 'NO' in her letter, she felt enraged and humiliated.
Everyone started laughing and Erica's fists clenched, and she started screaming and crying. She walked over to Hiro and began punching him with enhanced strength knocking Hiro's teeth out.
"Oy! That's enough!" Jacob yelled. He rushed over to Erika and tried dragging her away to no avail. She was using her super-strength, so Jacob couldn't even pull her away from Hiro.
"You might kill him!" someone from the group shouted.
On the other hand, the rest of the group started cheering Erika on, chanting, "GO GIRL GO! GO GIRL GIRL GIRL GO!".
After she was done, Hiro was lying on the ground. Blood poured from his mouth and nose, staining his shirt red. Everyone who was watching started laughing. Erika stared at Hiro until he stopped moving.
"Let's get out of here!" one of the boys said. Everyone ran away and locked the entrance to the roof so nobody would find Hiro's beaten body.
*Later at night.*
Hiro woke up and lay on the ground, as he couldn't move his broken body. But soon, he heard a door unlocking and noticed an unfamiliar person entering the rooftop. A white-haired man with silver eyes. When he saw Hiro's state, he quickly rushed to help him and healed Hiro with his superpower.
"Jeez, what the fuck happened?!" the man asked, helping Hiro into a sitting position.
Hiro sat quietly and stared down at the floor. He looked up only when he heard the man asking,
"Is your name Hiro Akatsuki?"
"Huh?" Hiro looked up and stared at the man with shock. "How does he know my name?" Hiro thought. "Could this guy be sent by Erika's family? But why would he heal me?" Hiro couldn't understand what was going on. He believed that if Erika's family sent this person, he would have come here to ensure that Hiro was dead, not heal him.
"Who are you?" Hiro asked cautiously.
"My name is Loki. Would you mind explaining what happened?" Loki knew about Hiro's suicide that would occur in this building in two days, but he had no idea why. It was never mentioned in the novel. "Would you mind telling me?"
"Uh... Sure." Hiro answered and explained everything. With tears in his eyes, he complained about his family, about the abuse in school, and Loki was shocked and disgusted.
Little did they know, but this was the birth of a friendship that might doom the world's future.
