Ma-ri's dark Mercedes Benz sped along the road as they headed towards the hospital. Seo-yeon, who was drunk a few minutes ago, is now okay. She couldn't cry or do anything, sitting at the passenger's seat while looking like a statue.
She had avoided this news since the previous year. She was sure the probability of him getting surgery was very high.
Immediately after they left Do-yun's place he was diagnosed with glioblastoma. They had been using all sorts of medication to control his illness and he seemed okay but now…..
She wondered what could have possibly happened to her little boy.
"Don't worry too much Seo-yeon," her friend tried to ease her aching heart with a soothing word, "The hospital is owned by Ge-un, I'm sure he would take him to the VIP ward and give him the best treatment. I messaged him already." Ma-ri comforted her friend who was busy biting her lips, so hard to the point of almost bleeding.
"I don't want him to get diagnosed with some other illness, recently he has been complaining of chest pain and he's been having high fever for the past couple of days" Seo-yeon sighed.
"Don't worry too much Seo-yeon, he'll be fine."
A Mercedes Benz drove into the underground parking lot of Yun Hospital. Seo-yeon and Ma-ri quickly got out of the car and rushed to the elevator.
When they made it to the top floor, they met with the receptionist who led them to Ji-hoon's ward.
His doctor, Ge-un, who was also Ma-ri's boyfriend, was standing in front of Ji-hoon's ward talking with a nurse.
"Ge-un, how is he? What happened?" Seo-yeon asked without delay, unable to control herself after sighting the doctor who was in charge of taking care of her son, tears lingered in her eyes but she made sure not to let any drop.
"His case this time around isn't his glioblastoma. We're conducting some tests right now and in the case of his glioblastoma, he has to get his surgery done within two months." Ge-un professionally informed Seo-yeon who grabbed on to Ma-ri just to make sure she wasn't having another episodic nightmares again.
"How much will the surgery cost?" Ma-ri proceeded to ask for her friend who had gone mute.
"Normally, it cost ten million won but I'll beat it down to seven million won for you. I'll pay the rest of the surgery bill." Ge-un replied. "Ma-ri has paid for his ward bills and care bills before the surgery. I'll advise you to let him stay in the hospital till the day of the surgery because his glioblastoma is getting worse, the drugs aren't working on it."
"Where will I get seven million won in two months?" Seo-yeon fell to the ground, it felt like she was having another emotional breakdown, first it was her home, how it's Ji-hoon. "I don't have where to get that amount of money from."
"Come on Seo-yeon. Let's first check on Ji-hoon's condition." Ma-ri lifted her nearly torned friend from the ground and shot Ge-un a deadly glare. He wasn't the kind of person who slowly delivers bad news. He says it straight and directly.
Seo-yeon rushed to her son's bedside after Ma-ri mentioned his name. The nurse was busy checking the drip connected to his body when she rushed to hold him.
"My sweetheart, my little angel, Ji-hoon, please be strong for momma okay? Don't stress momma." She sobbed and the little boy looked at his mother lovingly.
"Ji-hoon, won't be sick for momma." The little boy said with a weak smile and Seo-yeon couldn't help but smile, he must be in a lot of pain but yet he's smiling like this, her son is indeed a brave boy.
Wiping her tears away, she kissed him on the forehead and stroked his hair lovingly, "that's my sweetheart. You shouldn't be sick for momma. Momma will look for money to pay your hospital bills and you know how hard it is before momma can earn large money. Be a good boy and don't stress momma." Seo-yeon kissed his cheeks and he nodded gently before he started coughing.
"Little sir needs to rest ma'am. You can come back in once he has slept." The nurse politely said to Seo-yeon who nodded in complete understanding.
Giving him a quick peck, Seo-yeon and Ma-ri stepped out of the ward to sit outside in the passageway.
"Where will I get the money Ma-ri?" Seo-yeon commented with a downcast expression, "I also have to pay for the bills of the building by the end of next month and pay for Ji-hoon's surgery within the maximum of three weeks, I have very little time to look for the money…. What….what do I do?"
"I'm so sorry Seo-yeon. Even all my savings aren't up to a million and half won. I had to pay for some bills yesterday. I'll see what I can do to help you alright?" Ma-ri comforted her friend, it hurt her to see how helpless she was in helping her friend at this particular moment when she's needed the most.
"But I'm being a burden to you Ma-ri. No matter how hard I work, I won't get the ten million won on time. No matter how hard I work. No matter how many jobs I get."
"It's okay Seo-yeon. It's okay….listen look at me," she made her friend look straight into her eyes before she finally lost it, "the Seo-yeon I know never gives up, even though there isn't money she's going to keep believing she can get it. Don't worry too much Seo-yeon. We'll get the money soon okay?"
Seo-yeon could see the reassurance in her friends eyes but still...it was only wishful thinking, it's only a miracle that can get her out of this dilemma but this isn't some fairytale story where dreams could be easily fulfilled.
She woke up to face reality the moment Do-yun abandoned her. Ma-ri kept trying to console her friend but the lady won't stop crying which was starting to irk Ma-ri up.
"Okay now what do we do? If you keep on crying, you'll just hurt yourself. Crying won't solve anything." She pinpointed.
Seo-yeon managed to get a hold of herself and walked to the window of the corridor, idly staring out into the busy street. She picked her phone from her trouser pocket and called one of her workers to bring some things for her.
"....Just bring some of the food left. I will talk to both of you when I come back tomorrow. Lock the restaurant and open it tomorrow by twelve pm." She ordered.
"Seo-yeon, Ge-un sent for you in his office." Ma-ri said to the lady who was lost in thoughts already.
"I can't help but feel this is the worst news I will hear about today. If one of my workers brings dinner before my coming, take your own dinner and leave the rest for when Ji-hoon wakes up later at night." Seo-yeon sighed, walking past her like a robot being controlled, she was completely broken down by all of this.
"What about you Seo-yeon?" Ma-ri frowned, displeased that her friend was intentionally trying to skip dinner. "If you skip meals, do you know it's bad for you?"
"I do. I'm not just hungry. I'll be back soon."
Without waiting to hear Ma-ri's next word of scolding, Seo-yeon walked into Ge-un's office nervously.
Ge-un was completely focused on the paper with him, engrossed in whatever content was written on it.
When he noticed he had a visitor, he dropped the paper and gestured for her to sit opposite him.
"Seo-yeon, I told you a few months back to check Ji-hoon's genotype and it came out as AS, we were surprised because of his constant sickness. Now I think these sickness Ji-hoon has are from the genes he carries. The results of his tests are out and again he's diagnosed with pneumonia." Ge-un said gently to look at Seo-yeon's expression. She looked like she was expecting the news already.
"Pneumonia." She repeated while he nodded in response, he felt really bad for the woman in front of him, her expression looked too pitiable.
'What did I do to deserve this?' She thought silently, 'why don't they just take my life instead of making me suffer'
