The room turned silent. That is, until Meira broke into a fit of magical laughter. Her usually beautiful facial features contorted into something else entirely as she wiped away her tears.
"Daphne, I thought you were smart. How foolish of me that I actually thought you were someone I could talk to." Meira clutched her stomach in pain, as if she had laughed so hard that her muscles were protesting. "Do you not know what the only way to not stand in a shadow is?"
Daphne took a small step back as Meira leaned in closer.
"Only the highest peak is not overshadowed by anything."
"Why are you admitting all of this to me?" Rubbing her temples, Daphne didn't know if it was too late for Meira.
"What's the point of hiding it from you? You need my antidote to live, so why would I be scared of telling you any of this?" As usual, Meira's proud response was straight to the point.
