A week had passed since the trial, and Xu Anyi has remained alone inside her new cage until now.
She did not know that the prison had private visiting rooms, and she also didn't know who had come to visit her, but there was no one she cared about anymore, except one person. . .
The door creaked open and Xu Anyi lifted her arm up to cover her eyes as the sunlight from outside spilled into the dark space, lighting it up for a quick moment before the door was shut again.
Xu Anyi slowly opened her eyes again and they landed on the two people standing across from her. It was a man and a woman. . . Or more specifically, her husband and her best friend.
She stared at Lu Yuzhe, the man she loved since she was 8 years old. She could not seem to recognize him.
Lu Yuzhe frowned slightly as he did not like the way she was looking at him, and he grabbed onto Xia Yiwei's hand as he walked over to the two chairs set across from Xu Anyi, separated by a glass partition.
He sat down, pulling Xia Yiwei down as well, who sat next to him. Xia Yiwei looked at Xu Anyi, her eyes filled with sorrow, regret, pity, grief. However, the act she was putting on her face did not matter, for Xu Anyi didn't even bother to look her way.
Lu Yuzhe made eye contact with her, but after a few seconds, he looked away under her piercing glare, reaching down to pull a folder out of his briefcase.
He set it down onto the table, and looked up again, expecting her to say something. However, Xu Anyi remained silent.
After a while, Lu Yuzhe's patience finally ran out as he slid the folder over to her, "Xu Anyi, let's get divorced."
A mocking smile crept onto Xu Anyi's face and it soon broke out into an empty chuckle as she leaned back, laughing coldly.
Lu Yuzhe and Xia Yiwei both frowned as they watched her, confused at her reaction.
"I never liked you." Lu Yuzhe confessed, lifting up his hand which was intertwined with Xia Yiwei's hand, "I always loved Yiwei."
Xu Anyi's laughing slowly died down as she looked up at the ceiling blankly. After a marriage that didn't even last one year, he wanted to divorce and was telling her that he never loved her. . . Yet she had loved him for all her life. How funny.
And he loved Xia Yiwei!
Xu Anyi's eyes darted towards Xia Yiwei, who flinched at her piercing gaze and looked away towards Lu Yuzhe, pulling their hands down together like a frightened bunny.
Xia Yiwei was the daughter of the butler of the Lu family, so she grew up with Lu Yuzhe and Xu Anyi.
She was also Xu Anyi's best friend, although Xu Anyi didn't have many female friends.
How long has there been something between the two of them. . . Xu Anyi scoffed. She must have been stupid to have been around them every day but never to have known or even been suspicious.
There must have been signs, perhaps in the smallest actions or quickest glances they stole at each other, but she probably willingly ignored them to protect herself and her persistent love.
Xu Anyi felt a strong pain pierce her heart, although she tried not to show it. She had liked Lu Yuzhe since she was a little kid, and this attraction towards him only developed as he grew up to be tall and good-looking, especially in Xu Anyi's eyes.
He liked to wear thin golden-framed glasses when working, and he always appeared very calm and well-mannered, which was something about him Xu Anyi really liked.
And since her parents always spoiled her, when Xu Anyi was 20, her parents agreed to let her marry the young master of the Lu family, Lu Yuzhe.
Even though the marriage didn't even last one year, her love for him stretched much longer, and everything that Lu Yuzhe told her today was enough to shatter her heart into tiny ragged pieces.
She looked down at the folder on the table.
"Xu Anyi-" Lu Yuzhe began impatiently, certain that Xu Anyi was going to throw a fit or refuse to get divorced.
She had always followed behind him annoyingly since they were little kids, and they had finally just gotten married ten months ago, so of course there was no way she would agree to get divorced so easily.
However, he was going to divorce her no matter what! He loved Xia Yiwei, and what's more, Xu Anyi was a parentless murderer now. Did she really think that he would stay married to her when she was in prison?
"There is no point in staying marr-" Lu Yuzhe suddenly stopped when he saw Xu Anyi open the folder and flip to the page where she was supposed to sign. Was she going to rip it up? That would be useless.
Xu Anyi placed one hand over the paper and slowly looked up at the two of them, "Give me the pen."
