Dinner was quiet except for the faint clanks of forks and plates while they ate. Buddy, who habitually wags his tail while enjoying a meal, seems to have registered the awkward atmosphere and was silently eating from his bowl without making the slightest sound.

Sophia raised her lids and surreptitiously shifted her gaze between Alex and Vanessa as they ate silently, clearly still unwilling to talk to each other.
