"What?" Yasmin exclaimed, her pupils dilating in shock. "His mother!" She blinked, speechless. It took her some time to gather her thoughts. "Why is he so upset with her?"
Derrek shrugged, sighing in dismay. "I don't know much about her. All I know is that she cheated on Dad. Declan caught her with another man." He shook his head and added, "I can't even imagine the pain of a five-year-old boy watching his mother make out with another man."
"He saw it!" Yasmin got another shock before she could even recover from the first.
Derrek nodded. "That's why he dislikes women. He thinks all women are cheaters like Grace. And unfortunately, his bride eloped with her boyfriend on the wedding day."
Yasmin looked ahead in a daze, gradually realizing why Declan had gone mad last night after hearing Grace's name. She had no idea how much pain he was holding in his heart. At the same time, she remembered how possessive he had become after seeing her with Caleb.
A shudder ran down her spine when Caleb's name crossed her mind.
Caleb had not stopped following her despite her warning. He didn't approach her or say anything to her. But he always showed up when she was in the library or cafeteria.
Yasmin shook her head, trying to dispel the unwanted thoughts. "So, she is now with that man."
"Yes. She has a daughter with her second husband. Listen, Yasmin…" Derrek's expression turned serious. "Don't ever mention her to Declan. And, please… keep your promise. Otherwise, I am a dead man."
"Hmm…" She squinted at him. "You are scared of your brother."
"Me…" Derrek pointed to himself. "Humph… I am not scared of him. It is my respect for my older brother. I don't want to hurt him, you know."
"Uh-huh… I get it." Yasmin tossed the key to him. "Take me home." She looked out the window.
Derrek caught the key with one hand and sulked. "Are you really taking me as a driver?"
"My husband told me a driver would come to pick me up," she said flippantly. "Then you showed up. What should I think?" She threw him a stern glare.
Derrek wrinkled his nose and muttered something that Yasmin couldn't understand.
"Don't curse me," Yasmin said. "You better drive me home fast."
Derrek's lips quirked into a wicked grin as a mischievous idea crossed his mind. "Why are you in such a hurry? Let's have some fun."
"No, no." She turned him down right away. "I have got a lot of homework to do."
"You can do it later. If you want, I can help you. I am a genius, you know."
Yasmin cocked her head and peered at him.
"How about going shopping?"
"Shopping?"
Derrek grinned when he saw her excitement. No woman would refuse to go shopping. "Yes. You can buy anything you like."
"Are you paying?" Yasmin asked, her eyes sparkling with anticipation.
"Of course."
"Let's go."
"Alright, Madam."
Derrek drove away, a sly smile on his face.
They arrived at a luxurious mall several minutes later. Yasmin stepped out of the car and stared at the brightly illuminated building. Her gaze was fixed on the word 'Elite,' which was glowing red. It was the costliest mall in the city. She never got the chance to come here.
Derrek gave the key to a valet and approached her. "Let's get in, shall we?"
"Yeah."
They walked into the mall.
Yasmin looked around with zeal. She could see the outlets of various brands. She didn't even know the names of some of them.
"In this way." Derrek led her into an outlet of Hermes.
When Yasmin looked at the apparel, her eyes dazzled. She liked everything in the shop, whether it was a dress, a scarf, shoes, or belts.
And those bags…
She couldn't resist checking out a brown sling bag.
"Don't waste time staring at it." Derrek approached her with a shopping cart. "Take it if you like." He snatched the bag from her and dropped it into the cart.
"Let me check the price at the very least," she whined.
"Who is paying?" Derrek waggled his eyebrows up and down.
Yasmin wanted to say something but ended up saying, "Fine."
She took a blue silk printed scarf. The fabric felt soft and light to the touch. The blue reminded her of Declan's eyes.
A smile crossed her lips. She wished Declan was here instead of Derrek.
"Take a look at it." Derrek's voice drew her attention. She saw him holding up a blue sleeveless dress.
"It will match with that scarf," he continued. "Go try it." He threw the dress at her.
"Oh…" Yasmin caught the dress. "Why are you being so generous to me?" she asked, her eyes narrowing. "What is your intention?"
"To please my brother." He grinned. "Don't ask anything. Go try on the dress."
Yasmin went into the trial room, muttering, "Don't know what his deal is with his brother." She put on the dress after taking off her skirt and crop top.
The dress ended right below her knees. It was slim fit until the waist, where it flared and fell symmetrically.
Yasmin put her hands on her flat tummy as she stared at herself in the mirror. She liked the dress, but she wanted to confirm it with Derrek. She went out to show him.
Derrek rubbed his chin as he stared at her from head to toe, wrinkles forming on his brow.
Yasmin's excitement waned when she saw his serious look. "Don't you think I look good in it?"
"Tsk… The dress is nice. But…" He came in closer and peered at her face. "Why are you wearing these big round glasses?" He pulled her specs out.
"Wait…" Yasmin blinked frequently. Her vision turned blurry. "Please return my glasses." She extended her hands towards him.
"See… You look stunning. This is the problem." He held up the specs in front of her face. "Declan won't be able to take his eyes off you." He smirked.
"Give me my glasses back," she snapped again.
"Alright, alright." He handed her the glasses.
Yasmin put on her specs. She heaved a sigh when she was able to see everything clearly. "Don't pull such a stunt with me. I will kill you." She gave him a scathing glare.
"These glasses are ruining your beauty. You have no idea how stunning you are without them. Why don't you try some contact lenses?"
Yasmin was furious with him. She went back to the trial room without answering him. His words, however, continued to ring in her ears. She looked into the mirror, wondering if he was telling the truth. She never used contact lenses because she thought it would be uncomfortable.
"Am I not beautiful with my specs?" She murmured. "Forget it. I don't care. I am comfortable with these." She was about to take off her dress. But she paused and returned her gaze to her reflection. Then she took off the glasses.
Everything went blurry. It was difficult for her to assess her appearance without the glasses.
She blinked and squinted to get a clear view. She even inched towards the mirror. Nothing was clear. At last, she sighed in defeat and put the specs back on.
"I am fine with my glasses," she mumbled as she removed the dress. She got out of the trial room after putting on her skirt and crop top.
"Let's get the bill." She turned to leave.
"Done already?" Derrek frowned as he gazed at the nearly empty cart. This was not what he had planned. He wouldn't let her leave until she filled the cart. "Try this." He took a red dress and tossed it on her.
"No more dresses."
"This one, this one, and this too." He grabbed black trousers, a white casual blouse, and a pink midi. "Try these." He gave her the dresses.
"Have you gone crazy?"
"Why are you so nervous? Who is paying?"
"Very well. I will drain your wallet today." She stormed into the trial room.
Derrek smirked. "That's what I want."
