Capítulo 43: Mated to the Demon Lord (1)

No one dared to utter a single word as they looked at the dead mage near Iris. Iris had no idea what just happened as she was still feeling groggy from the effects of her clash between her magic and the mage's spell. The silence around her was deafening and she looked around in confusion, wondering why no one was saying a thing.

"What's wrong? What happened?" She asked Amelia, whose face was as white as a paper.

Iris followed her friend's gaze and saw the dead mage lying on the floor. Terror rushed through her. Did she do this to the mage?

"I…" She stuttered. She wanted to explain, but she didn't know how to as Iris had no idea how this test ended up killing the mage instead.

She hadn't done anything or tried to use her magic due to Yuri's warning. It hadn't been a day since she arrived in Asnar and she already took the spotlight by killing another mage.

The demon lord, Asheera, the High Queen of Shayla Kingdom, waved her hand and lowered the glamor that was keeping the rest of the demon lords from the human maidens.

"What happened?" Someone from the thirteen, asked.

"Kieran, mind telling us why you marked this human with your geas?" An elderly man gave the Undead Lord a pointed look. "Your geas has killed Aleera's high mage."

This man was King Eldas, one of the three strongest demon lords in the Court of Shadows. It was rumored that he was stronger than Xanaros and Kieran Fleurnoir, but he willingly stepped back and allowed the Red King to lead the thirteen of them.

"I blessed her." Lord Kieran corrected the elder demon lord. "She did a great favor for me, so it's only natural that I give her a fair reward."

Iris looked at the Undead Lord in disbelief. So she wasn't the reason why the mage had died. It was because of this 'geas' that Lord Kieran had bestowed on her. She wasn't even aware of what this geas entailed.

"You better give me a better answer than that. In case you are forgetting, we aren't allowed to seek or touch any of these tributes before arriving here." Queen Aleera wasn't pleased with Lord Kieran's answer. Just like King Eldas mentioned, the one who was facilitating the test of the tribute maidens was a high mage from her court.

"I didn't break any rules." Lord Kieran insisted. "Our paths crossed even before the selection happened. Just like what Lady Iris said, the one who should be here was her younger sister. She only stepped forward and volunteered to replace her. It has nothing to do with my encounter with her."

"Milord, this won't go without punishment, right?" Queen Aleera turned to her husband, Xanaros. "I would never let this impertinence go overboard. Lord Kieran has no doubt broken one of our rules when it comes to the tributes."

She then turned her gaze to Iris, giving her a cold look as if she was blaming the mortal for bringing such disaster to their land.

The Red King said nothing and only cupped his chin as he gave Kieran an amused look. The Undead Lord looked at Xanaros straight in the eyes, seeing that the other demon lord had known that he had blessed Iris from the very start.

"Then what do you suggest, my Queen?" Xanaros asked Aleera, without breaking his eye contact with Lord Kieran.

"Kill this mage and bring the younger sister here." The Red Queen replied. "This mortal isn't supposed to be here anyway."

Iris trembled as soon as she heard those words. It seemed that her sacrifice was futile after all and Junifer was still destined to come to Asnar, regardless of what she'd done.

"Remus, what else has changed?" The Red King asked the golden haired demon lord.

Remus's eyes flashed blue as he tried to peek into the future of the three mortal maidens below them.

"I cannot see the future of these three maidens. Lady Iris's presence here has disrupted and changed the course of the fate of those two maidens with her. I'm not sure whether this is good news or not. She also possesses an exceptional amount of mana that could easily allow her to use a fourth tier magic spell."

"We should let Lady Iris stay then. If we are facing the unknown by having her here in Asnar, then we might find something that could lead to what we are looking for." The Red King hummed.

"Wouldn't that mean that we are allowing danger to loom over us?" Caelea questioned.

"We've seen magi amongst the tributes that were sent to us before, but I have to agree that their mana is subpar compared to Lady Iris's raw mana. Which house is she born into?" A female elf with silvery white long hair asked. Her amber colored eyes look at Iris with interest. She was wearing a slightly revealing blue and gold armor that barely covered her chest and midsection.

"There's no magical crest on her that could tell us the affinity of her magic." Remus replied. "There's no telling if her ancestors are one of those who fled to the mortal kingdoms centuries ago."

"There's no need to kill Lady Iris. It's not her fault that Aleera's mage ended up dead. Since she and her friends would be staying in Shayla Kingdom, it would also give us enough time to decide whether her existence could create a ripple in our fates or not." Riasa commented, then turning on her left to regard the demon lord seated next to her.

"What do you think, Asheera? Do you think your sister is right this time?"

"With such an exceptional amount of mana, it would be a pity to waste Lady Iris's potential by killing her." The High Queen of the faeries replied, receiving a scathing look from her elder sister, Aleera.

Capítulo 44: Mated to the Demon Lord (2)

Lord Kieran was seething in anger. It was obvious to him that Xanaros was using this opportunity to undermine him by using the mortal magus against him. It would be unfair for the mortal human to take the blame for the death of Aleera's high mage.

However, it only proved that Iris's magic was extremely deadly to the extent that her magic was able to repel the magic of a high mage. The memory of the creation magic Iris showed that fateful night showed that she was more than just a fourth tiered magus.

No magus would be able to resist such a mental attack and restore one's health and life, unless they reached a certain level. Her creation magic was almost comparable to the High Queens of the faerie kingdoms. It was said that life bloomed anywhere they walked on, but Iris had practically restored the woods in a blink of an eye and dispelled the vampire lord's eternal winter spell.

Remus, a saint who was able to use divine magic, assumed that Iris was at least able to cast fourth tiered spells, but it was only because the Undead Lord placed a magic limiter on her. There was no telling how strong Iris could be if once she was capable of utilizing her magic at its full potential.

Perhaps this was why Aleera wanted Iris dead. There hadn't been any magus that were able to reach the seventh tier after the Black Mage's fall. Did she perhaps think that Iris would follow the footsteps of the Black Mage once she learned how to utilize her magic? Or was she afraid that another Black Mage would appear amongst the magi in Asnar?

"It still doesn't change the fact that Lord Kieran has marked one of the maidens as his people." Aleera insisted. "Dravial has sent us the list of the names of the tributes for us to forecast their fates. Bringing a marked tribute here has put Remus's hard work to naught."

"Kieran wouldn't take back the geas from Lady Iris." King Eldas pointed out. "Now that she's one of his people, I assume that he will take responsibility for all of this."

"She belongs to him now." The Red King nodded. "Since that's the case, let's push it one step further, shall we?"

The Red King snapped his thumb and forefinger together and Iris felt like she was being incinerated alive. She dropped on her knees and cried in pain. A rune appeared on her back, burning a part of her shirt in the process, exposing the rune for everyone to see.

"Iris!" Amelia cried. However, before she could take a step towards her friend, Ricci appeared behind her and stopped her from going near Iris.

"You can't touch her, Miss Amelia! You will die!" Ricci said helplessly as Amelia struggled in her hold. It was clear that Iris was being punished by the Red King.

Panic rose in Amelia's eyes as she looked at Iris then to Lord Kieran, hoping that the demon lord would do something to help her friend. However, her stomach dropped when Kieran ignored Iris's pain.

"How dare you?!" The Undead Lord hissed towards the Red King. A scalding sound followed and a wisp of smoke appeared behind him. "You dare to mark me with this mortal woman?!"

He was betrothed to Iris Scarborough now and will be bound to her through magic and mating rune that were embedded on their skin. The hardness in his eyes showed displeasure at the sudden turn of events.

Xanaros cocked his head on one side and clasped his hands together. It was obvious to everyone now that he was taking delight in seeing the Undead Lord try to spare the human magus from being killed.

"What? Think of it as I'm extending an olive branch to you. I'm merely helping you reach your goal. Aren't you curious whether this mating rune would be able to kill you?" He said arrogantly. "If this human dies, you do. Or is it an exception as well? Your curse surely has an exemption at some point."

Lord Kieran's jaws hardened. He then looked at the human who was crying out in pain on the dais below them. He waved his hand and Iris suddenly passed out and lost consciousness.

Seeing what he'd done, the Red King burst into laughter. His mask did nothing to hide the amusement on his face and the wicked smile on his lips. It curled deviously, showing his perfectly white teeth.

"You act like this mortal human meant nothing to you and yet you took her pain away. How the mighty have fallen. To think that there would come a day that I will see you protect a mortal human - the creatures you've despised the most? Do tell us, Kieran, what kind of spell has this magus placed on you?"

The Undead Lord said nothing, but the way he looked at the Red King, it promised slow death and torture. He would have killed Xanaros right here, right now if they weren't all bound to a blood pact they made a millennium ago.

The pact was to keep the thirteen demon lords from murdering each other. However, it wasn't enough to stop them from scheming and trying to use others to kill one of them. Xanaros had been trying to kill Lord Kieran for centuries, but to no avail. The Red King kept failing every time.

"Eldas, do you think this is enough punishment for Kieran and Lady Iris?" Xanaros ignored Kieran's deadly glare and regarded the other demon lord instead. "This way, if something happened to Lady Iris, Kieran would be affected as well."

"Do as you wish, but this better not bite your arse in the future, Xanaros." King Eldas warned him, but Xanaros shrugged it off.

"We'll see." He said nonchalantly. Xanaros didn't care if Iris died in the process. He was merely curious if the mating bond between the two would be able to kill Kieran as well.
