Aurora and Stephan exchanged a handshake with a wide grin stipulating a common acceptance of both terms. The traveller would get a chance to experience her theories and the apprentice mage would get training in the combat field. This way, even if the boy returned to the present tense, he would have learnt something useful.
When they walked down from her chamber, they found the rest of the gang gathered around tankards of ale. Aurora was excited to join them but Stephan stopped her saying he didn't want his master to be drunk and put his face to the ground. The group talked about many things, not specific to any topic. They were just teasing and verbally abusing each other.
The conversations didn't yield anything of use to Stephan; he simply stared at his plate, full of eggs and bacon. There was something that bothered him about Aurora; she insinuated she had been observing him from the moment he stepped into the tavern. However, how could she do that when she was joking around and having fun? Certainly, she wouldn't focus on two things at once, either you were silent acting as an observer or an actor in the play. No one could watch and act in the play at the same time.
He turned his head attracted by anything that seemed different from their stupid behaviours. The hybrid that greeted them when they arrived at Revampirina pushed the door open, accompanied by the dwarf Gillibrian; it seemed he returned his brain to the usual place and decided to come back. Another person was with them and he was human, looking like a merchant. The hybrid pushed the peasant on his knees. The action attracted all attention and stopped everyone from talking.
The hybrid had noble attire suggesting he was a man of rank. It was different from that time. He looked at Stephan who was observing his every movement. The mixed-blood moved with his hands behind his back and a head raised high. His eyes kept rolling from side to side, looking at each face distinctively. There was an air of dignity and pride, also something else that suggested he was looking down at everyone except one. He brought his head down and greeted Aurora with a wide smile.
"This visit is unofficial! Do not share your greetings which I won't need. I brought something you let rot on the road. It seemed so miserable that I thought it would be of great pleasure to bring it back to the owner."
Gillibrian clenched his fists, his pride completely crushed. He had the impression he was treated like an animal, a worthless being. Even animals provided something to eat. Somehow, he was thankful for the mixed blood. There were many that took dwarves as slaves and made them work endlessly creating weapons. He didn't want to be a slave. As soon as the hybrid waved a hand, Gillibrian walked to Stephan, his head held low.
"I am glad that the disposables are with you," he swept the group with a glance. "When will you set about your task? I thought you would come to find me yesterday but it seems you had some…" his eyes landed on Stephan disgusted. "…Important matters to deal with."
"I intended to do it today but it seems I got some important matters and I won't be able to finish them today. Therefore, four days from now, I will make sure to finish the task and obviously, you would prepare my gold. I am only doing it for the gold after all."
"You will be hindering the task because of a human, master mage. I thought you didn't care about other matters."
"It's true but the rule doesn't involve my disciple," Aurora glared at the hybrid. "I think there are some thanks that need to be shared. Thank you for bringing our friend the dwarf and you can be assured that I will be successful. However, what's the use of the peasant?"
The hybrid exchanged a weird look with her then turned his back and left. The peasant was still on his knees. He couldn't bring himself to raise his head as the mage master was a respectable one even amongst the hybrids.
"Who was he?" Soprana had her eyes fixed on the door, thinking the man would come back. She was repulsed at his sight; she always hated half-bloods, except when they were good for being servants.
"The acting Overseer of Revampirina until the Ambrosia decides to shut the town once and for all," Aurora replied.
"Why are we called disposables?" Richard frowned. "Do you think you can use us as you wish lady mage? Your company was delightful but, what to expect from human mages? They are nothing but researchers for their own selfish desires," he got hiccups.
"You don't have to worry much about it. I have my own rules. I don't touch others who don't consent to my experiments. Furthermore, you will only be in the way. I don't want burdens, because certainly if you are in danger, I won't step out and save your arse. Each for his own, bud. You acted that way when humans were in a threat so Do not expect more when you are on these lands."
Richard grew gloomy. He put down his tankard and checked his pouch to pay but it was empty. He had to leave before the next day. He didn't have anything to pay for himself or his two companions. In the end, he left and Soprana followed him with her eyes. She found it pitiful that she didn't have any interest in him after that hot night.
"Isn't it bad they are leaving?" Stephan asked.
"I know you wanted to use them, Stephan, but it's not worth it. They aren't worth it. Their pride will get in the way and they won't listen to you. Before long, you will find them dead. If what you told me is complete truth, then it would be best to let them go and you have both messengers, right?"
She looked at Agandaur then Gillibrian. "Once you get the weapons, you will state your favour and return." Her confident smile made him understand she was enough for the whole thing.
