“Michalski is an old geezer,” Joanna announced in the car en route to the prosecutor's office. “Don't let him intimidate you. You made a fool out of him by getting the defendant acquitted and he had to use all his contacts to avoid being thrown into the deep end.”
“It puzzled me that he is still in Warsaw.”
“His father-in-law is a Supreme Court judge and his uncle works for some minister. But if he doesn't strangle Kwiecień now, he'll be fired for sure, so he can try literally anything.”
“I'll be careful.”
“Good. How do you want to play this?”
“Play what?" Adam didn't understand what she was asking him.
“Kwiecień. I know you believe in his guilt.”
“And you don't?” he quipped.
“Not people like him walk free.”
“You are talking about someone who raped, tortured and killed four boys” Adam got indignant.
Joanna didn't answer right away, but her face spoke instead of her mouth - to her a serial killer was a joke.
