“S-s-so, what does it mean?” Anurak fumbled over his words, still shook by losing Kun Ice. He asked the question, but seemed disinterested in my response as he focused on his dead packmate’s corpse instead of the child’s brand.

“My husband has that same brand on his foot. But, there’s no way....” Half of me wanted to solve the riddle, but the other half wanted to leave this rancid depot of death first. “Can we go somewhere else to talk?” I suggested.

Anurak and I stood and turned away from the dead carcasses on the ground in front of us and motioned over to Kun Lalisa who was nursing a now awakened Dtengmo. The child’s color had returned, her tree bark-colored irises were now visible, but her energy waned compared to before. Her mouth trembled as she tried to form words, however she couldn’t shape the sounds.
