Remain happy

Joy had been chatting nonstop ever since they left through the gates of the estate. She clearly had a lot of fun spending a day with her grandparents and grandpappy. Natasha and Dom were happy that she had a lot to talk about. They were glad that Joy enjoyed her stay, it made them feel both relieved and a little bit happy that at least whatever problems they had was not in any way affecting their daughter.

Dom had forgotten how much he truly missed having his daughter around. Hearing her cute little voice, hearing her lovely laugh, her sweet smile and the way her eyes went wide whenever she was excited about something.

So he made sure to contribute to the conversation. He did not want her to be the only one talking so he made sure to show her that he was listening. He replied to her comments and told her some things to make her laugh as well.

His heart felt so much lighter whenever Joy was around. She reminded him why he kept on doing what he did, why he decided that peace was the best thing. Above everything he was a father, he had a duty to love, protect and provide for his family.

He really wished that Joy would continue to remain happy, that the ever vibrant smile on her face would never be erased, that she would never have any reason to be sad, or to be filled with unhappiness.

Yet, at the back of his mind he knew that it was unlikely that she would continue to remain happy, not with all the problems he and Natasha had on ground.

Whether they liked it or not, Joy was growing up, becoming more aware of things, taking note of the unsaid words, and sooner or later, she would begin to notice that things were extremely rocky between her parents and she would start to questions things, start to ask Dom the word that he did not like to hear which was, 'Why?'

As much as he wanted to be honest with her, telling her why things were like this would do nothing but crush her little heart. She was young, innocent, she didn't need the cumbersome load of adult problems affecting her life.

That was why Dom made it his mission to make peace and end whatever hard feelings Natasha had towards him, even though she had every right to; But for the sake of their daughter, he was going to make sure that Natasha forgave him and saw how truly sorry he was.

Natasha on the other hand had been silent the entire conversation. Not because she was sad or angry, but because she just felt so calm, she was relaxed. Hearing Joy's voice was enough to make her forget all her problems for a moment.

After all, life was filled with so many problems, but it was your choice to decide whether to focus on all your problems or focus on the things and the people that made you happy and Joy was one of them.

Dom would occasionally glance at Natasha, he was checking if she was okay, she was awfully quiet and even though Joy did not seem to mind, he did. He was worried, he was not sure if she was feeling okay. But she did look fine.

There was even a light smile on her face. She looked relaxed if anything, but this was Natasha, Dom had learnt recently that she might just be hiding how she truly feels on the inside, and he didn't think that was healthy.

"Daddy can we stop for ice cream on our way home?" asked Joy as soon as she finished eating the brownies her grandma had given them.

She was developing sort of a sweet tooth, and her parents seemed to be in such a good mood that maybe, just maybe they would indulge her a bit.

"I don't think so princess, I think we have ice cream at home though." said Dom.

"Okay." said Joy as she smiled, at least there was the prospect of eating ice cream once they got home.

"So princess, what would you like me to make you for dinner?" asked Dom as he smiled and Joy gasped.

"Daddy you're going to make dinner?" asked Joy in surprise as her eyes went wide.

"Yes, of course I am." he replied with a smile, there was no one else back home, Alfred was still with Ernest and he didn't think Natasha would have the strength to cook anything, she had barely eaten well, which left him alone to settle the matter of what exactly they were going to eat.

"Daddy you can cook??!!" asked Joy in shock as Dom chuckled, feeling a bit embarrassed by her shock, had he never cooked for her before? He was not that bad in the kitchen, he was a good cook in his own eyes.

Breakfast he would make excellently, lunch he could also, dinner, he knew how to make some basic dishes.

"Yes of course I can cook princess, have I never made you something?" asked Dom as Joy shook her head, she had no memory of her father preparing something for her.

"Daddy are you sure that you can cook?" asked Joy in doubt, no offence to her father but she had quite a silly image of him in the kitchen trying to prepare something.

"Mommy, can daddy cook?" asked Joy as she turned her head to look at her mother who simply laughed.

"Well my darling, your daddy can cook, but only a bit." said Natasha as Dom was offended.

"How come only a bit?" he asked, curious as to what she thought about his cooking, in the past she had commended him on it, but who was to say that her views hadn't changed over the course of time.

"Well making something as simple as eggs isn't really being a master chef now is it?" asked Natasha as Dom frowned.

"Well yes, but I don't only know how to make eggs, I've made several meals, remember? asked Dom as on a normal day if Joy wasn't here, he wouldn't really care if anyone belittled his culinary skills. But his daughter was here, he didn't want her to think that he was a terrible cook.

"Oh yes I do remember." said Natasha.

"And I also remember that one time where you tried making dinner for the everyone when we went to stay at your grandfather's summer house for spring break." said Natasha as Dom grimaced, already remembering the memory.

"Not only did you almost burn down the kitchen, but you burnt everything from the meat to the vegetables even to the soup, how do you even burn soup??!" asked Natasha with a snicker as Joy burst out laughing.

"In my defence, may I remind you that I was distracted by Charlie, he said he wanted to help and we ended up burning everything." said Dom with a frown as Natasha laughed.

"Yeah right, that may be so, but everything was tasteless, we ended up just ordering pizza, there was nothing salvageable about that dinner of yours." said Natasha as the sounds of her laughter and Joy's laughter rang in Dom's ears.

Even though his culinary skills were being criticized, at least they had something to laugh about. That was why Dom ended up finding himself laughing as well instead of trying to defend his cooking skills.

"Daddy, I don't think that you can cook, burning food isn't cooking." said Joy as she laughed.

"That's a low blow princess, you'll see, I'll make something nice for you, something that you will like." said Dom as he glanced at Natasha trying to see if she had any reservations for him wanting to cook, but he saw none.

Natasha couldn't care less, she didn't feel like cooking at all, so whatever Dom decided she would go with.

"Hmm maybe next time daddy, how about we get some burgers?" asked Joy excitedly.

"Burgers?" asked Dom as Joy nodded.

"Yes, Uncle Charlie got some yesterday and they were delicious." said Joy as Dom sighed and shook his head, of course Charlie that glutton was the spark that ignited this burgers idea in her head.

"So can we please get some burgers?" asked Joy as she smiled.

"I don't know about that princess, that's junk food, you need to eat healthy things so you can grow up big and strong." said Dom.

"But mommy said that there's nothing wrong with eating junk food sometimes." said Joy with a frown as Dom was surprised.

"She did?" asked Dom in surprise as Joy nodded.

"You did?" asked Dom as he turned to look at Natasha who looked at her.

"Well yes, I guess that I did." said Natasha in amusement, she didn't know that her darling would quote her. It was just so funny that she used her words so effectively.

"You see daddy, so can we please get some burgers? Mommy agrees, right mommy?" asked Joy as she looked at Natasha who laughed.

"I do my darling." replied Natasha as Joy laughed happily.

"So can we daddy?" asked Joy as Dom agreed.

"I guess so." he replied, now that he thought about it, there was nothing wrong with them going out to eat together, so as along as Natasha was alright with it, which she was.

"Yayyy, thank you mommy, thank you daddy." said Joy with a happy smile plastered on her face.

"You're welcome my darling." replied Natasha as she smiled and Dom could not help but smile.
