"How did you end up in this situation Professor Quirrell?" asked Dumbledore.
"I was doing my patrol headmaster when I saw three kids entering the 3rd-floor room. I was surprised by the lack of protective measures on the door. I quickly followed them and found a sleeping Cerebrus. I saw the trapdoor and followed the students when I met Miss Granger and an unconscious Mr. Weasly. I asked them to inform the faculty as I went to get Mr. Potter. Mr. Potter was being threatened by Professor Dawlish who removed his turban and had a face attached to his back. It seemed like some sort of possession. We started to engage in battle as he sent a killing curse. I threw the stone and dodged with Harry. Unluckily, the curse hit the stone and something dark came out of it and latched onto Professor Dawlish" I said.
"He wanted to kill me with a fiendfyre but I was able to douse it and push a knife through his heart before more damage could be done". I added.
Most teachers looked unwell. Flitwick and Snape were inspecting the remaining dust that the creature has turned into.
"Why did you kill him, Professor Quirrell? We could have tried to bring him back" Dumbledore said.
'I knew this old goat is insane. I am not going to play to his tunes and contradict him. That should be what he wants and then label me as going dark.' The other Professors including Snape looked at him with a sense of derision. They have all seen and felt the enormous dark magic that the wizard or creature whatever it was, emitted.
"Sorry about that Professor. I tried all my spells and none of them seemed to have an effect on him. Even the cutting spell was healed in a mere second. I wanted to bring him in contained but couldn't. As he started releasing more dark magic, I could only think of the students and school so I jumped at him and stabbed him in the heart" I said.
Dumbledore looked at Quirrell questioningly while the faculty looked at him with respect.
"I say its a job well done Professor. We all saw what a dark creature it was. It could have caused so much damage if it was allowed to stabilize whatever it absorbed from the stone" said Flitwick.
Dumbledore looked at the coal-like stone with melancholic eyes.
"I think I will go to the infirmary and wait for the ministry aurors" I said.
"Now now, there is no need to involve the ministry for this matter is there. This could be solved in Hogwarts itself" grandfather Dumbledore gave his two pence of wisdom.
"Headmaster, a Professor has died. Not only that he was an ex auror. Sooner or later they are going to know. It is better we take the initiative and let the ministry know that one of their previous employees died. We should omit the involvement of the students in this event, it may cause unnecessary worry" I said.
"Yes, Headmaster. Professor Quirrell is right." said a concerned McGonagall. Three of her lions were involved in this fiasco.
As I walked away from the scene, I saw Dumbledore picking up the coal like stone and keeping it in his pocket.
As I reached the infirmary, I saw Ron and Harry on the beds talking with Hermione. An anxious Madam Pomfrey arrived and checked on Quirrell.
"I was thrown around quite a bit Madam. Could you also check upon any presence of dark curses? He was throwing curses left and right." I said while laying on a bed.
"How is everything now Professor Quirrell" asked Harry.
"Dawlish is dead. Whatever possessed him has fled the castle" I told.
"Will he be able to come back Professor?" Harry asked.
"I am afraid there may be ways in which he could come back. Magic is a vast ocean Harry and we all are nothing but people staying on its shores"
I took some potions from Madam Pomfrey for pain and slept soundly.
Once I woke up I was welcomed by a group of aurors, an enraged Madam Bones, head of DMLE, and Cornelius Fudge in the headmaster's office.
The headmaster and several professors were around as well.
I told them what happened to Dawlish and omitted the involvement of the golden trio.
"Dumbledore, what crap are you playing at keeping an artifact any dark wizard would risk his life for in the school?" asked a furious Madam Bones. "After the troll disaster and now this. You even brought a Cerebrus within the castle. How crazy are you?" she vented. Her niece is also studying in this school. What if she accidentally entered that room?
"Nicolas entrusted me the stone as an attempt to steal it happened. I never thought Dawlish would be possessed" said Dumbledore feigning ignorance.
"Could we see the memory of your bout with Dawlish?" asked the minister. I obliged and gave him the memory before omitting the part with Harry of course.
They took out the pensive and started to view the memory. Most were shocked when Dawlish had another face attached to his head, due to the previous burn marks it looked hideous and not at all like the Voldermort they knew. But what scared them most was the wizard's insane healing factor and resistance to spells. Dumbledore was surprised to see the Raven Patronus and how it effectively contained the black threads. They let out a sigh of relief as I plunged the dagger into his heart but felt fear when they saw its black eyes and how effortlessly it pushed me aside.
"Well, I believe that a tragedy was avoided thanks to this young man. I guess for exemplary services beyond the ordinary you should be awarded an Order of Merlin second class I'd say" said Fudge.
"Thank you, Minister" I said and quickly exited.
As the ministry group left to question other Professors, Dumbledore sat in his chair looking stumped. What just happened in the past 24 hours was something that he had no role to play in. He was in the dark the whole time.
'Apparently, Quirrell is antagonistic to the dark lord. But then when he saw the information of wraith I 'mistakenly' slipped up, he was so ecstatic to serve the dark lord. He changed too much during his year of sabbatical. And what crap was in that stone that made Dawlish and Voldermort turn crazy and powerful. He had not felt that kind of threat even from Grindelwald.'
'Damn that bald idiot who threw my stone into the killing curse. It took me a lot of time and energy to fleece...ahem....secure the stone from Nicolas. It seems the origin of the stone is not what he has told me. It does not behave like an alchemical ingredient once destroyed. It more or less behaved like a product of some kind of blood ritual.'
'I want to believe that I was one step ahead, but I need to visit Nicolas and ask him if it was the real stone. Why do I feel like the old bag of bones did a switcheroo?'
'Hopefully, none of them noticed it was Voldermort. Or else it could have foiled all my plans.'
'Amelia and Cornelius do not look at me with reverence anymore. I need to show them soon the power of Albus Dumbledore. I will make them beg for my assistance once Tom comes back. But now its time to go and be the grandfather to a poor child lying in the hospital'
