As the group arrived, the sight that greeted them was a small town with no tall skyscraper-like buildings. The only biggest building in this shelter was a military one, which was only three stories high. The texture of the ground that they were standing on was rough, hard, and orange in color, probably made of some kind of sandstone found there. Let's not forget the different stalls that were selling all kinds of things, starting from jewelry to food to weapons, and many more.
As the group looked around, taking in their surroundings, Peter noticed that one of the persons in their group was missing (insert dramatic drum roll); it was none other than Rayne.
"Hey, where is Rayne? I can't see him," Peter said with slight panic. This comment caused Quinn to look around frantically, thinking that Rayne got separated. But his search was stopped when Erin pointed in one direction where they could see Rayne sitting in a food stall drinking something along with eating chili cheese fries. So, all of them made their way towards Rayne. As they made their way Quinn needed to use an umbrella as he was sweating talk about perks of being a vampire.
"What are you doing? I was so worried. I thought I lost you," Quinn said.
As the group reached the place where Rayne was eating, they were horrified by the sight before them, except for Peter and Erin.
Rayne grabbed a handful of chilli fries and shoved them into his mouth, his cheeks puffing out as he chewed noisily. Chunks of fries fell out of his mouth and onto the table, as he continued to shovel in more. He wiped the ketchup and chilli sauce off his chin with the back of his hand, leaving a trail of grease on his face. Then he grabbed his glass of cold drink, gulped it down and slammed it back onto the table with a loud burp. "Whaddya talkin' 'bout? I jush went to buy a map while you guys were wassin' your time admiring your surroun's," he said, still chewing and talking with his mouth full.
"Let him eat first before we talk," Erin said. She continued to stare at him eating before deciding to order what he was eating. She sat down opposite Rayne and also started to eat. This time, seeing the scene in front of them, most of the people in their group were shocked. They had this mental image painted in their mind where she was this high, arrogant princess-like figure. But now seeing her eat alongside Rayne made them think maybe their perception of her character was wrong all along.
Seeing the scene in front of Quinn made his stomach grumble, but alas, he was now unable to eat anything worth food to humans. This caused him to become sad, and all Layla and Vorden could do was pat his back and give him condolences.
After finishing their food, Rayne motioned for them to sit down. After they sat down, he took out a map, which was some kind of digital paper. After that, he went on to talk about what kind of beasts are found in which place. He then went on to talk about hunting in the green area, which is mostly populated by teethworms before moving up the rank. After discussing the plans they went on before, Rayne paid for both his and Erin's meal, and they made their way towards the green area.
As they made their way towards the green area, Rayne asked Peter to make him an earth spear. After reaching the area and getting into formation, Rayne directed Peter to stomp on the ground with the intention of creating vibrations with his earth ability and attract the beasts towards them. Soon enough, the beasts started springing out of the sand and lunging in their direction. Rayne instructed Peter not to kill any until they reached his perimeter and surpassed the first layer of defense.
As the group continued to fight, Rayne, feeling bored, asked Peter to create 10 spears before walking to the forefront and starting to kill the beasts, using 10 of his spears and mostly flexing his skills. Within a minute, he easily killed 5 beasts, with 3 being impaled and the other being smashed by brute force, probably with kicks. On Quinn's side, there were also 3 or 2 beasts that were able to wiggle past him.
"Hey Peter, this is boring. Why don't you use Almighty Stomp and make them all come out at once? Let's do a competition to see who can kill the most amount of beasts the quickest," Rayne said, looking at both Erin and Vorden with a fire of determination burning in both their eyes.
Hearing Rayne say one of his childish technique names made him embarrassed, but he still did it. He entered a martial art stance, the horse stance, before raising one of his foot up and concentrating all his energy on stomping heavily on the ground. The whole ground trembled, and suddenly around tens of teethworms started to jump out of the sand, not being able to handle the vibration of the ground. Rayne took the pre-made earth spear and started to throw them like javelins while throwing some of them with his legs. He looked like some kind of martial arts master, while Vorden and Erin were trying to throw ice spikes and spears as fast as possible. By the end of the match, Rayne killed 4, Erin killed 5, and Vorden killed 2. In other words, Vorden lost the match. But due to their little competition, they were able to make a whole lot of crystals, exactly 21 crystals. When Rayne asked if there were any beasts in the area, Peter shook his head and said that there were none. They had killed most of them, and it seemed like the others were not coming. Feeling satisfied, Rayne advised them to return to the shelter and register the crystals before making their way towards a new area.
All their actions were being monitored by a group of students who, when looking at Peter, thought he was an outcast as he was not talking to the rest of the members. This caused them to make a plan which would cause their own demise.
They then headed straight for the military base, which was located at the center of the Shelter. It was a square-like building that had several different departments. But for the next week, just in front of the building, there was a small stand for students. At the stand was a single adult soldier, and behind him was a large digital screen. They handed the man the crystals they had collected, and after counting them, he took two of the crystals and returned the rest. The digital screen behind him suddenly updated, displaying the name Layla and the number 21 next to it. Out of all the numbers on the screen, Layla's name was placed fifth from the top. Towards the top of the screen were higher numbers, and towards the bottom were lower. Some groups hadn't handed in any crystals yet and had a score of 0.
"Hey, do you see that?" Layla said, pointing at the screen.
Towards the top, a single group had managed to obtain 30 crystals. Almost 9 crystals more than our group.
After that, they decided to rest for the night, as they were all exhausted due to using their abilities continuously. The soldier behind the counter instructed the group where to go next. They did as he ordered and were led to a building near the edge of the Shelter. It was a two-story accommodation block that was used for students during their outing missions. A room had been given to each team. There were also several blocks nearby for other students, and it didn't seem like there were any residents nearby.
When they entered, they were surprised to see how large the space was inside. It was a lot nicer compared to their rooms at the military school. They each had their own individual rooms, and there was also a cooking area and a living room. Even from Rayne's standard, it was much larger, considering that he had a whole room for himself due to it being considered cursed. The cost of living was cheap on shelters, so they were able to provide bigger spaces for the students. Before they were to head off to sleep for the night or day, they decided that they should have a group meeting on the kitchen table.
The six of them sat down, and Erin was the first to speak. "I would like to make a suggestion," she said. "As you all know, my goal is to come out as one of the top teams during this assessment. Right now, we're just above average, and I can't accept that. That's why I think tomorrow we should head into the red zone."
"I think we're strong enough," Vorden added. "But the problem is with these three, although they are strong in their own way, like both Rayne and Peter are versatile with their weapon, I don't think they would be able to do anything in front of the big ones. Don't take offense to my accusations."
"I thought of that too," Erin said. "As you can see on the map, there is a safe zone just outside of the red area. Most likely, it's a territory where two different beasts clash, so they don't cross each other's path. The two can wait there while we go inside and attack."
"Well, since the three of them haven't rejected the idea, it looks like we have a plan," Erin said.
After that, the group went on to rest for the night, but at that moment, Rayne's wristwatch started to buzz, making him open it. A hologram appeared with Mr. Winter sitting in it. "What's the report, Condor One? How was your day?" Arvon Winter said.
"Meh, normal. Nothing interesting," Rayne replied.
"Baby Eagle has arrived just now," Arvon said through Rayne's wristwatch.
"Pfft, Baby Eagle? Are we doing a Resident Evil roleplay? But I have a question, how are you contacting me?" Rayne asked in disbelief.
"I am on this planet, that's how I am contacting you," Arvon stated matter-of-factly.
"Sleep now, tomorrow you have a very important job to do," Arvon said with a serious tone.
"Yes, sir. Condor one out," Rayne replied before the line was terminated, and he decided to get some sleep.
