Leaving the basketball club, Ilia goes to the guard room to pick up his ice cream. He was relieved to find his ice cream hadn't been ravaged by security guards who sometimes lost control because they were hungry.
He is tired and he wants to sleep as soon as possible. With that, his footsteps were faster than usual as he walked home. He didn't even use the usual path he walk on and decided to take a shortcut through the park.
Peace and a relaxing atmosphere were the things he felt as he walked under the trees. Their shadows made by the afternoon sun gave him coolness. Looking up, he could see an orange sky that was more beautiful than he expected.
Ilia didn't know why, his body and mood became lighter, so suddenly.
"It's weird," he said, slightly tilting his head.
He takes the other twenty-three steps until...
"Hiks! Hiks ... hiks."
He heard the faint voice of someone crying.
Ilia knew that the faint cry was made by a woman as he recalled how gentle the voice was. He's curious and because of his desire to be a good person, he decided to look for the crying person. He wanted to know, did the person need his help?
Ilia searches for a while and he finds a familiar back.
"Jeanne? Sobbing? Why?"
Seeing Jeanne crying, Ilia couldn't just walk away as if he hadn't seen anything. More than that, he felt worried after noticing something was wrong with the girl over the past few days and especially after he found out, the girl threw away her favorite earrings.
With a thought - she may need my help - Ilia decides to approach Jeanne.
As he walked over, he picked up one of his ice creams. He didn't hesitate to put the ice cream over the girl's head as he asked, "Something's wrong, Jeanne?"
And it all happened so fast. Shortly after the ice cream touched Jeanne's head, she stood up, turned around, and launched a punch towards Ilia's face! That quick and accurate punch didn't let the boy getaway.
Dwagh!
Ilia could feel an excruciating pain stinging his nose as he made a strange outcry, "gobuh!" Spontaneously.
His head bounced back while the ice cream he was holding fell. A moment later, he crouched down and covered his nose with his hands.
"Gaah! That hurts," Ilia said in a shaking voice. A moment later he turned up to look at Jeanne. He opened his mouth to say, "what are you-" and didn't continue when he saw the girl's face.
He don't know when, the girl had left her bench and now, she was standing right in front of him. The boy was so shocked as his eyes fixed on the girl's face.
Monotonous expressions, eyes that lost light, and black lines on her cheeks as tears melted her makeup. Those were things he didn't expect.
Shivers crawled through his body before he froze. A moment later, his feet become weak. The girl terrified him.
Jeanne clutched the collar of Ilia's jacket. With an impossible strength for a girl, she pulls him up. The girl then withdraws her free arm to launch another punch.
Seeing the danger approaching, Ilia shouted, "Wait! Wait! I'm not a punching bag!"
"You are, in my eyes," Jeanne said in a flat voice. A moment later, she launched her second punch.
Dwagh!
Ilia's nose became a victim once again! Blood has been shed!
"Wait! Wait! Don't punch me! I just want to cheer you up and return your favorite earrings!" Ilia pleaded a second time.
Jeanne stopped her third already launched punch after hearing the word 'your favorite earrings' coming out of his mouth. She was eager to punch him in the face considering that right now, her fist was just two centimeters in front of his nose. Yet, she lowered her fist and decided to listen to him.
Ilia who was freed hastily retrieved Jeanne's earrings from inside the pocket of his jacket. He put the earrings in his hand then present them to the girl. "Here's your earrings, please take them."
Jeanne's eyes were wide open and she was frozen for a moment. She cried again before taking her earrings.
"Thank you," she whispered. A moment later, she returned to the bench she had left and then sat in there again.
Two thoughts appeared inside Ilia's head when she saw Jeanne wearing her earrings: she was so angry and sad, should I leave and give her some time to be alone? Or... Maybe it's a good idea if I stay to accompany her while trying to cheer her up. She can't be left alone, right?
Ilia thought about which thoughts he should choose as he picked up the fallen ice cream. He decided after he put the ice cream into the nearby trash can.
A moment later...
Ilia sat next to Jeanne as he takes out a small towel from inside his bag. His hands that holding the small towel moved to stop the blood flowing from his nose. Meanwhile, Jeanne wipes her tears along with her makeup using her handkerchief.
A few moments later, Jeanne peeked at Ilia. Annoyedly, she asked, "now what!?"
"What is it..." Ilia did not continue his words. It's not that he doesn't want to say something but he doesn't know what to say. Especially when his nose hurts so much and he's busy stopping the blood.
Hence, silence enveloped the two of them.
It's not good, Ilia thought. He decided to sit next to Jeanne because he wanted to cheer her up. If he keeps quiet and does nothing, he strays far from his goal.
So, "Are you okay?" Ilia begins.
His body shivered again as he received a sharp gaze from Jeanne. He thought he will get another punch from her but...
"Are you stupid? Have you seen me and you asked me that question? Seriously?"
Those questions stabbed Ilia's heart deeply. He made a grasping gesture in front of his chest while making a sound, "Gah!"
As Ilia hung his head weakly. Once again, silence comes to them.
A moment later, Jeanne broke the silence by saying, "You need to know, I don't need any help. Don't waste your time on me, you can leave now."
Did Ilia go? Did he give up? Did he leave Jeanne?
No! He's not! That steel-hearted boy wouldn't stop until he got the outcome he wanted!
Ilia wants Jeanne to feel better and he won't leave before that happens. So, he pulled out his last weapon and pointed it at the girl.
"Here, for you," said Ilia softly. His last vanilla ice cream was in the palm of his hand.
Jeanne faced Ilia. Her blood-red eyes watched his expression and eyes. The girl tries to find the hidden intent, lies, and act he does. But, she found nothing of those things in him. Reluctantly, she took the ice cream out of his hands.
