Capítulo 12: Chapter 12

The hallway was insidious, it had an eerie feel to it as the warden made his way passed the rooms containing inmates, all looking at him as though he was a saint amongst sinners.

"I found my rats yesterday ward'n." One of the inmates yelled at the warden as he went by.

"Canon to the left of them, Canon to the right of them…" Another yelled in a British accent.

It was always a riot in the Asylum when the warden came around. It was like an angel was walking through the midst of condemned.

Soon, he came to a room with the numbers 23 written on it. He then braced himself up a bit, gave a sigh of preparedness and swiped in his admin card to unlock the door. He pushed the doors ever so gingerly into the well-lit white room, covered in padding all around from floor to wall to ceiling. It had a table and two chairs in the middle and on the table was a chess board with pieces made from marshmallows, in case the inmate tried to get harmful with it. There were cameras in each corner of the cubed room, all pointing towards the middle where a man sat quietly, staring away from the door of the room and unto the wall which was opposite. The man was buckled in a stray jacket and had long hair which fell down to his waist.

"How are we doing today, Mr. Vee?" The warden said as he shut the door behind him. Vee did not respond to the question but just sat there in silence staring at the wall in front of him.

"Well, you seem ok but you know you have to communicate with me because…"

"That's how therapy works." Vee completed the wardens sentence as the warden said it. He then stood up from his crossed legs as straight as any person possibly could without any need to stagger, after which he turned to look at the warden.

Vee was a man of straight stature, he was well above six feet almost hitting the seven-inch mark. His dark hair covered his face due to it unkept nature but the lower half of his face was a bit visible revealing his bearded jawline. He had a tattoo around his neck of Japanese marking that resembled a choker and rows of piercing on his left ear lobe.

"Don't you know I of all people cherish our therapy sessions?" Vee said to the warden.

"Well, I think you do, after all, I try my best to make it as fun as possible…" The warden was talking when Vee raised a leg to signify that he stopped talking. He then walked over to the chess board and sat on a chair and then crossed his legs, gesturing the warden to sit on the opposite chair which he did.

"I only like our therapy sessions, not because of your awful attempt at trying to fix a broken mug like me but because it's the only time you open that door and a little part of reality from the outside world flows into this blank space." Vee said as he looked around the room before using his mouth to play his chess piece.

"Well, I personally feel we are making progress because the first time you came in here, you couldn't even sit still without the urge to… disembowel." The warden said as he played his piece. There was a bit of silence in the room, the warden looked at Vee who just kept staring deeply at the chess board. The warden then tried to come closer to inspect the inmate to see if he was fine. Immediately, Vee let out a laugh which startled the warden.

"Disembowel… such a funny word." Vee said still giggling a bit.

"Well, yes…" The warden was about to speak but he was hushed again by Vee.

"I have always been fine." Vee said looking at which chess piece to play next.

"All I did was 'disembowel' flaws." He said as he finally played his turn. The warden paused for a bit before speaking.

"You cut open birds and rodents." The warden said which made Vee look him dead in the eyes then gestured with his chin for the warden to play which he did.

"I only carved the ones that were not perfect." Vee replied.

"I always told you Mr. Vee, you are not to judge."

Vee looked at the warden with a death glare which made him retreat a bit.

"Wait, your turn." Vee instructed the warden then looked down at the board to think of another piece to play. He then picked up his knight and set it in his desired location.

"Look, Vee, I so far am convinced that you're making progress but you need to stop jeopardizing your chances when the welfare officials come to check on you." The warden said.

"Don't you want to get out of here and live a normal life?" he asked Vee as he played his turn. The inmate looked as though he was worried which made the warden smile a bit for he thought he was getting through to the patient but all hope was dashed when Vee began to laugh again.

"Welfare? You mean those clowns in suits that only come here to find faults they can sight so they can inflate the cost of fixing and give to the mayor who gives them double or triple the amount they actually need? Those guys are the most flawed of all." He said with a devious grin then moved his piece to kill the warden's which he ate.

"They aren't flawed… they are your only ticket out of here." The warden said with a look of desperation. Vee then gestured that he played his piece to which the warden did then looked at Vee who thrust his face close to the warden's startling him.

"How much are you getting from my release?" Vee asked the warden who seemed confused.

"I…I don't know what you're talking about." The warden said.

"I listen to the walls ward'n, I know when those clowns come into your office… I know that they will get payed when I get cured because then, I'll be a testament to the 'good standard' of this Asylum." Vee explained to the warden who was just speechless. He then proceeded to sit back in his chair and play his turn.

"Look, just see it as a win-win situation, I get my cash and you get your freedom." The warden said as he played his piece with a relaxed look.

"Check." He said with a smirk. Vee looked at the warden for a brief moment with a straight face, then slowly began to smile too.

"Freedom? To go back out to that flawed reality?" Vee said with a look of disgust as he moved his king to avoid a checkmate. His attitude was already getting on the warden's nerves who was already visibly getting angry.

"Mr. Vee, now I suggest you overlook the flaws and come to a realization that nobody is perfect." Upon hearing that Vee froze up and looked slowly at the warden before bursting into a teary laugh. The warden was once again confused at the behavior of the inmate. Soon Vee comported himself and beckoned the warden to play which he did. Almost immediately, Vee spat blood into the eye of the warden who clenched at his eyeball. Vee then began to pull out the eye with some form of blood manipulation. He had already extracted the bloody eyeball before he then kicked the table toward the warden which hit him in the gut.

"What the hell!" the warden yelled.

"No one is perfect, that's just what I needed to hear, all the flawed must be carved, starting with you!" Vee said as he ripped the stray jacket with a sickle he conjured from blood revealing his ripped body full of self-inflicted scars. He then took the sickle and walked slowly toward the warden.

"How…are you… doing… this?" the warden asked still holding onto his eye socket which was gushing with blood.

"Wouldn't you want to know?" Vee said as he cut himself and manipulated the blood to pierce the wardens arm and lifted him up.

"You see, no one can hold my freedom except me, it's not that I couldn't leave, but it's that I didn't." Vee said with a wide grin as he tore through the warden's belly spilling out his entrails covered in crimson.

"Such a beauty." Vee said as he watched the warden go into shock and die.

"One more thing, I never liked Chess." Vee whispered in the corpse's ear. The white room stained in red as he made his way out the room by blasting the door wide opening, setting off an alarm. He then went into the hallway and carved a hole through a wall which led outside into the night. He manipulated his blood to act as extra arms to carry him atop the building where it was cold and breezy. He could hear the alarm he had set below him in the hallway as other nurses and security guards came searching for him.

"I'm coming brother." Were his last words before disappearing into the night.

"Face it John, I'm not going with Alexander or whatever his name is." Will said as he paced around the hospital room.

"Look, you're not looking at the bigger picture here?" John tried to talk calmly to his brother. His leg was already almost healed but was still in a cast.

"You heard what he said, it's an opportunity to find out the real cause of our parent's deaths." John said.

"Like we don't already know?" Will said with a raised eyebrow.

"Don't do this again." John said with a sigh after which he put his fingers on his nose.

"You're the one trying to convince me to go with Alexander."

"Because all I want is a way out of our obscurities, now we have a person who was as close to mom and dad as we were, trying to take care of us and you're gonna pass up the opportunity just because you don't like magic?" John gave Will a stern look.

"What about you?" Will snapped back.

"What about me?" John asked sarcastically.

"You're only trying to follow Alexander because you like magic and now you see it as an opportunity to learn actual magic and not just your usual dumb tricks and illusions." Will yelled as he sat down grumpily.

"It is a matter of life and death Will." John tried to make Will understand the importance of the situation.

"The reality as we know it is at stake." He continued.

"Barely a day you knew em and you're already sounding like em." Will said with disgust.

"You saw what he could do okay, as far as I know he's doing it because he knows the bigger picture." John yelled at Will who seemed to be startled by his brother's tone.

"We lost our parents, it's an already established fact, no one is happy about it, not me, not you, not Alexander." John took a pause to which Will was about to speak but he cut in.

"I don't know if you saw it but Alexander felt the guilt of not being there to save them the same way I feel the guilt of being the one that started the fire that took their lives." Both brothers were silent for a brief moment before John spoke again.

"If this is an opportunity for Alexander and me to redeem ourselves… then sorry I don't know about you but I'm definitely going with him." John said with conviction and a bit of tears in his eyes. Will looked on as his brother let out his frustrations and, in that moment, he understood what this was all about.

"You haven't had a seizure since we got here." Will said as he walked over to sit beside John on his bed.

"Well I haven't been stressed much." John said with a giggle as he looked at Will.

"You sure you can deal with the stress that comes with being a mage?" Will asked jokingly to which John roughed up his brother's hair.

"Well if it's anything like what I saw Alexander do, I'm gonna have to suck it up and push forward." John replied then he looked out the window into the afternoon sky.

"We don't really have the luxury of time now do we?"

"No, we don't." a familiar voice came from the door of the door which was now open.

"Alexander! What are you doing here?" Will asked.

"Well, someone's in a chatty mood." Alexander smirked at Will.

"I came to check on both of you and find out if Will had had a change of heart." On saying this, the brothers looked at each other and then Will walked toward Alexander, stopping when he was in front of him.

"If this is the only way to make things right, then we have no choice." Will said with an air of confidence as he looked up to the mage which sort of reminded Alexander of himself back in the day.

"Very well." Alexander said to the brothers. Wills eye caught a glimpse of the hallway and in the waiting section was a familiar face.

"Is… she with you?" Will asked as he pointed to the girl in the hallway. It was the pale faced girl he had bumped into on his way to deliver things for Mr. Woo.

"Oh, yes she is." Alexander said as he beckoned her to come over.

"I believe you've met Dalia?" Alexander asked. Both John and Will just kept staring at the girl in awe.

"She was actually the one that notified me of your aura." He continued.

"Was she the girl you told me about bro?" John asked.

"Yeah… yeah she is." Will said still staring at the girl who felt embarrassed and then hid behind Alexander.

"Anyway, it's good to have you guys with me on the same page cus I arranged things with the doctor and he said by tomorrow I can have you guys out of here and take you both home." Alexander said with a wide smile.

"So, you both rest up and by tomorrow I'll come get you." Alexander concluded before making his exit with Dalia behind him. The brothers looked at each other and smiled. It felt like a fresh start was beginning for them. They were going to finally investigate the truth about their parent's deaths and they were going to be part of an event that would save the human realm.
