I slipped out of bed once I was sure she was asleep. I’d heard Mom’s ringtone earlier, but I was otherwise occupied. I shouldn’t put off calling her back for much longer, or she’d keep calling and wake my girl up. No doubt she’d been calling to give me an earful for not coming to see her, but I’m sure I can get her to calm down and erase whatever hurt she’s feeling.
I hadn’t thought this thing through very well, I realize, knowing how sensitive Mom can be, but my only thought was of getting Silla home and settled before her life here began. I think I’m beginning to see why friends in the past always seemed to change once they got married and settled down.
It seems to be a given that once you change your life in that way, there’s no help for it. I’ll be the first to say I never expected to fall victim to the same malady, but here we are, day one, and I’ve already fallen down the rabbit hole.
