Capítulo 23: Chapter 23 - You're Too Cute

I'm really working on getting these out, but I'm getting trained at Subway and I've been getting more and more shifts... between that and college I've been having a hard time getting chapters out. I'm hoping to get somewhere between 2-4 chapters out a week. If I can't pull that off I'll try and make them up the week after.

===============================

The son of Joseph Stone, the president of the Devon Corporation, future champion of the Pokémon League, a Steel-type Pokémon specialist- with a hobby of collecting rare stones- Steven Stone! This hobby made him ascend to the throne of the top of the three Pokémon NEET royal families. Two other examples would be Volkner and Riley.

"NEET" originally refers to a group of people who don't go to school, don't work and aren't looking for work, and do almost nothing but stay inside all day. Here, it's used to describe someone like Steven who spends his entire day digging stones in a cave to be a champion, someone like Volkner who plays with electronics all day and shuts of the cities power grid, or someone like Riley who trains with Lucario on Iron Island all the time.

Quinn still remembers a quote from Steven in the games, "Part of my goal was to traverse the land in search of rare stones, but more than that..."

Looking at the trainer's debut pictures that appeared on the TV, Quinn fixed his eyes on the boy with silver-blue hair and silver-blue eyes. Now Steven should be about sixteen years old, and has a face filled with unshakeable confidence.

"It's starting!" Nishida yelled excitedly.

Because he knew the result of the match, Quinn didn't react that much.

As the referee's whistle sounded, amidst the cheering of the audience around the competition venue, the trainers released their Pokémon.

Steven's first Pokémon was a perfectly bred Skarmory, and the rando trainer who Quinn was already having problems remembering sent out a Golem.

The League Tournament, no matter what region it's held in, it's regarded as a top of the line competition. Trainers who can get there are all insanely talented trainers. With Steven's calm command, Skarmory flew forward and hit Golem with a powerful Steel Wing! Golem was knocked back and hit the ground hard- creating an explosion of smoke.

When the smoke had dissipated, Golem had fainted and was recalled, while Skarmory nonchalantly landed in front of Steven without a scratch.

"What... one move?" Nishida said in shock.

With the remaining members of the random trainer's team, Steven showed no mercy and knocked them all out with a single move- only switching out once. What was even more frightening is that during this process, Steven's face was always calm and kept a steady expression, almost as if everything was within his expectations. By the time the match had ended, Quinn didn't get to see Steven's ace- his Shiny Metagross.

Using only two Pokémon, he flawlessly defeated his opponent and won the match. This kind of crushing battle makes it hard for someone to not be shocked.

'Can I become a trainer that strong?' Quinn wondered.

Quinn recalled every calm decision and prediction of Steven in the battle, as he repeated that question in his heart.

The battle in the finals of the League Contest is like a college class, while the battle between Budew and Nishida's Krabby was a kindergarten... They're not anywhere near the same magnitude.

'How will I know if I don't try?' Quinn thought, making up his mind.

Together with the Pokémon, they'll work hard to make it to the top of the Pokémon League! However, the most important thing now is to save money...

——

Early the next morning, Quinn cleaning up in the bathroom, preparing to continue to familiarize Budew with her new move. While Quinn was looking in the mirror, Gengar suddenly appeared behind him with a creepy grimace, and floated out from the mirror.

Seeing this, Quinn showed no change in his expression- and merely continued wiping his face with a towel. Gengar started to doubt his ability to scare people, and asked, "Are you really not afraid of me?"

Quinn looked and Gengar, and decided to tell the truth, saying, "Honestly, you're just too cute to be scary."

Gengar was made out to be scary by ancient humans. The so called 'Curse of Resentment' was just nightmares, and the natural cold that he radiates can be used as air-conditioning in the summer... Compared with other ghost-type Pokémon, he's actually quite kind and simple. Moreover, he also wants to eat cute foods like ice cream and cakes. Combined with its somewhat insidious and cunning expression, it gives off a cute feeling of contrast.

Being described as cute for the first time, Gengar blushed and said in a very small voice, "I guess I won't tell you the location of the treasures anymore."

After saying that, Gengar sank back into the mirror and disappeared.

After washing his face, Quinn went out with the Budew and Cramorant as usual. It was now late autumn, and it would be winter soon. The weather had started to get colder, and as soon as the bitter autumn wind blew, Budew's body couldn't help shrinking into Quinn's arms.

"Bud~"

Quinn noticed how cold Budew was, and thinking about it, he went out with the two of them and bought a scarf for both of them from the store.

"Okay." Said Quinn as he finished tying Budew's scarf. He then went to tie Cramorant's scarf.

He patted Cramorant's head and said, "You don't need to wear this when you go in the river, it will wet the scarf, and there's no shortage of food at home, so you don't need to bring anything home with you."

Quinn didn't notice it at first, but later he realized that Cramorant's behavior of bringing food from outside seemed to be because Cramorant feared he would starve.

"Gah?" Cramorant tilted his head blankly, still unable to understand him.

Quinn sighed helplessly when he saw this. In any case, he had decided to stay with Cramorant for the rest of his life.

This time out, in addition to the scarves, he bought some daily necessities, such as basic potions, snacks for grass-types, and so on. Most of these things are prepared for Budew and Cramorant. He doesn't have much need for extra food, clothing, shelter, or transportation, as long as he can eat something and stay warm.

Looking at the mess in his bag, Quinn suddenly felt like he was raising a child...

Shaking his head and throwing out those thoughts. He was going to take some things home and take Budew to the forest to train.

Gengar looked at the scarves around Cramorant and Budew's neck, a little envious. He couldn't help but think, "If only I met this human sooner."

Unfortunately, there is no if only. Gengar felt lost and returned to the Sealed Orb.

Quinn naturally noticed Gengar's movement, and pulled out a pink scarf with a Eevee chibi printed on the side he had gotten for Gengar.

Gengar is a poor wandering spirit who is temporarily staying with him. While in the store, Quinn thought of the conversation with Gengar in the morning, and when he saw this scarf, he thought it was suitable for Gengar and bought it. After paying, he remembered that Gengar couldn't touch anything, but he had already bought it as a winter gift for him.

Quinn grabbed the orb and wrapped it with the scarf, after placing it back down he went out to train with Budew.

The room quickly fell silent. Gengar suddenly appeared from the orb, and was stunned seeing the scarf. He floated in front of the desk, starting at it. Although it can't be touched, he still gently stroked the scarf with his paw.

The autumn wind came blowing from the open window, opening a book on the desk- flipping back and forth between pages. Staring at the scarf and hearing the calm noises, Gengar felt like crying.
