Capítulo 6: Origin of Magic! (Part-2)

"So there are many theories about Origin of Magic, while some may believe that magic is a sentient higher power and we just channel and shape it to do some phenomenal things, but as early as from 1400's a spell was invented that could measure the power of someone's core..." Dumbeldore started explaining after seeing the incredulous look all of us were giving to his question.

"The current leading theory is that every magical being has a magical core for example..." he waved his wand at me and started muttering some incantations in Latin. A golden semi-tangible thread burst out of his wand circled over my chest and then went back before twisting into '182'

"That is your mana core's capacity to hold mana, every witch or wizard is born with a magical core. Squibs are wizards or witches whose magical core could never reach beyond the threshold of 2 which is normally recognised as the minimum number required to cast any spell. Think of it like this, an average wizard who has mastered the Levitation spell uses 2 units of his mana core every time he or she casts the spell, for every action that requires magic the wizard in question depletes their magic until you reach the state of magical exhaustion..." He looked at lily as if asking her permission before repeating the incantation on her.

'153'

As the number appeared everybody was shocked, "...as you can see your core strength is quite abnormal and we'll get to that later how that factored into your condition. Now..." He said 'Now' loudly gathering everyone's attention, "an average witch wizard has a mana pool of 120-150, Lily's mana pool is superior to an average wizard or witch. If I were to use the same spell on Severus or Minerva then the numbers would be higher than Lily and maybe close to your strength."

"Because of her being Muggleborn?" I asked curiously but upon noticing her uncomfortable look I hastily added, "...not that I mean anything by it, but there should be a difference and it could be a factor-" before I could ramble on Lily gave me a smile so I shut up.

"...Well, unfortunately, there is some truth to that fact but not in the way you think, a Pureblood like yourself has a certain advantage and a larger mana core is among them, but due to high inbreeding in British Purebloods, this has turned into a disadvantage leading to more squibs being born along with weaker mana pool. The spell that I just used is considered dark magic in Britain and thus I needed Lily's permission before I could cast that spell, can you guess why?" Dumbledore asked.

"Because British Purebloods do not want to accept the cost of what keeping themselves pure is doing to them," I answered with a sigh.

"Exactly my boy, now your mother being Italian has done wonders for your mana pool and maybe contributed to your excellent learning ability like with the potion... Anyway, we are getting off-topic here, now that you know every magical being even creatures and house-elf's have a magical core the next question that arises is how does one recover used mana." Dumbeldore seemed almost lost in thought at this point and everyone was hanging to his every word.

"...There are many theories related to this study and to date there is no proof of how or why do we regenerate our lost mana. Some believe that we absorb the ambient mana present in the environment to refill our core while others believe that we produce mana and when we practise and use spells that access mana is what makes up the ambient mana around us that the temporary wards like the privacy ward around us use."

"...Now what the most accepted theory states are that mana is generated by our souls, that is also the reason that soul magic is banned because using soul magic directly impacts your mana core. It is also the reason that one cannot just use potions or rituals to increase one's mana core otherwise there would not be any squibs in our world." Dumbeldore was about to continue his explanation before I interrupted.

"Are you saying that a wizards soul is more powerful than squibs or a muggle's core? How does that even work? What even is a soul? Wha-"

Dumbledore chuckled halting my questions, "These are indeed some questions whose answer you would have to find for yourself because finding answers to those questions is a journey in itself."

"I'll keep it short, A soul is quite frankly who you are, what you have experienced in life to get where you are, how you think, how you feel, how you react these are all the things that are your soul. Your soul makes you who you are, these are all spiritual terms to define a soul but physically soul is like your mana core that is present right beside your mana core..." he pointed his wand to my abdomen and continued, "... Soul of a person can be extracted, souls are very powerful, and are used a lot in the Darkest of arts. A Dementor's kiss sucks out a person's soul and leaves an empty husk behind, because of these magics the theory of a souls existence is confirmed. But what does that have to do with your condition?" Dumbledore asked and a feeling of dread overcame me.

"I damaged my soul because of the potion by suppressing who I am didn't I..." I felt Lily's hand squeezing my shoulder as Sirius moved closer to me.

"Oh! no no! I can see how you managed to reach that conclusion..." Dumbeldore said and I felt myself relax a little, "... You can't damage your soul that easily, to truly damage a soul is a terribly difficult thing with severe repercussions, what you did was dampen your soul's emotions thus altering it somewhat, not unlike having a life-death encounter, plus because of your Occlumency shields your memories are disconnected and dampened thus stopping your soul from healing itself, the potions that Professor Snape brewed today are already helping you heal the damage done and you'll be alright by this time tomorrow... Although I would advise not using that potion again because it does put a lot of strain on your soul and thus shouldn't be used... I suggest you don't publish that potion, it would be labelled as a dark potion."

"Of course Professor, there are only two copies of that recipe, the other one is locked in a safe place." I smiled and relaxed back on my bed.

'Maybe I should go, I don't need to spend anytime more than necessary in the infirmary if I have to.'

As if reading my thoughts Dumbledore said, "Yes, Mr Selwyn you can leave, you aren't in any danger, I just wanted to spend time discussing some magical theory before I go back for a good night of sleep!" and with that, he glided out of the room and the privacy ward dispersed.

All of us looked at him happily walk out while humming the lyrics of what I can guarantee was 'Hoggy Warty Hogwarts'

*Sigh*

'who would think he was talking about soul mutilation just a few seconds ago...'

"I would like to talk to you on the day term resumes Mr Selwyn, take care," Snape said before he glided out of the room leaving me with three Gryffindor's.

"I think there is too much bravery and guts in this room so I better slither away!" I exclaimed trying to get out of bed but three glares stopped me in my tracks.

"You're coming with us, Blaise..." Lily gave me a glare, "...I think we need to have a formal discussion about your genius magical talents..."

I know this chapter has a little too much talk and no action but I needed to establish some facts before we can explore magic in future chapters!! Anyway, this should explain MC's unreasonable emotion's regarding Harry, Daphne and Lily.
