Capítulo 542: Chapter 542: Next guests

Ivan was not as calm as Caresius, and the quick run he had just made drained most of his strength.

He slowly slid off Buckbeak's back and felt his knees shaking. Every muscle ached now, and even his breath stung.

Buckbeak turned his head and his large amber eyes looked inexplicably at Ivan, who was clinging desperately to his body.

Ivan smiled bitterly and asked Buckbeak to leave.

He walked slowly towards Hagrid's hut. Although he was very tired, the fruits of this expedition were beyond imagination.

After seeing the powerful magic, Ivan decided to change the direction of his research. He was going to focus on ancient magic and the magic recorded in The Book of Abraham, in order to understand the magical theory involved as soon as possible.

Ivan sat in Hagrid's hut for more than an hour, drinking tea and discussing questions related to the upbringing of the Scripps.

He did not know the ultimate fate of the Skrygutes, the Fire Crabs and the Manticore within the ruins, but in a collapse of such magnitude, they should all have died.

If Hagrid knew, he would surely weep with sadness.

When it was almost five o'clock and the sun was slowly setting, Ivan dragged his tired body back to the castle.

He had just entered the entrance hall of the castle and saw a large crowd of students, all milling around a large sign that had been erected at the foot of the marble staircase.

"What happened?" asked Ivan, next to him was Ernie MacMillan of Hufflepuff house, who emerged from the crowd, his eyes shining.

"It's only a week away!" said Ernie excitedly.

"What's only a week away?"

"The Triwizard Tournament!" replied Ernie quickly, trembling slightly with excitement. "The school just posted the announcement. The Beauxbatons and Durmstrang delegations will arrive at six o'clock on Friday evening, October 30. Classes will end half an hour earlier. Students will return their bags and books to their dormitories and gather in front of the castle to greet our guests before the welcome party."

"Oh, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang are coming?!" Ivan was in a trance. Time had passed so quickly.

He had just recently received a letter from Gabrielle telling him that the Beauxbatons students were ready to leave.

It was no wonder that his sister Fleur was doing very well in the school's internal primaries, and was highly regarded by Madam Maxime. Gabrielle also became the only Beauxbatons junior to have the opportunity to visit Hogwarts.

"Ivan, you're here, I haven't seen you all day, where have you been?"

Harry, Ron, and Hermione stepped delightedly out of the crowd, and finished reading the notice.

"I've gone to see Professor Moody to ask him a few things about the course," Ivan said simply.

"Well, I'm off!" said Ernie. "I wonder if Cedric knows. I'll go tell him."

"Cedric?" Ron said blankly as Ernie hurried off.

"Diggory!" said Harry. "He must be entering the tournament."

"I remember him. That idiot, Hogwarts champion..." said Ron frowning as they made their way through the chattering crowd towards the Great Hall.

"He's not an idiot. You just don't like him because he beat Gryffindor in Quidditch," said Hermione. "I hear he's a really good student...and he's a prefect."

Hearing her tone, it was as if the fact that he was a prefect settled the matter.

"Oh, yeah?!" Ron frowned, as if he wanted to refute Hermione.

But in the end, he said nothing. Since the last incident, the two had been getting along very cautiously.

Over the next week, as Ivan focused on magical research, there were obvious changes in the castle.

Now, wherever he went, there seemed to be only one topic of conversation: the Triwizard Tournament.

Rumors flew from student to student like highly contagious germs: who was going to try to be Hogwarts champion, what the tournament would consist of, how the Beauxbatons and Durmstrang students differed, etc.

Naturally, Ivan was a popular candidate to be Hogwarts champion, even though he did not meet the 17-year-old requirement set by the three Headmasters.

However, there were still many who thought he would find a way to compete and become champion.

After a period of heated discussion, this rumor came to an abrupt end.

The news that Ivan would not be champion to compete in the tournament came from the Gryffindor circle.

While they felt sorry and grateful for Ivan, the young wizards also selected the strongest students in their minds.

Most of the older wizards who were seventeen seemed to think they had the potential to become champions.

At the same time that everyone was talking about it, the castle was undergoing an extra-professional cleaning.

Several grimy portraits had been scrubbed, much to the chagrin of their subjects, who sat huddled in their frames muttering under their breath and wincing as their faces felt raw.

Suddenly, armor gleamed and moved without creaking.

Argus Filch, the janitor, kept watch at the door of the auditorium every day while he ate.

Other staff members also seemed strangely tense, trying to make everything look in the most perfect state.

When they came down to breakfast on the morning of October thirty, they found that the Great Dining Hall had been decorated overnight.

Huge silk banners hung from the walls, each representing a Hogwarts House: red with a gold lion for Gryffindor, blue with a bronze eagle for Ravenclaw, yellow with a black badger for Hufflepuff, and green with a silver snake for Slytherin.

Behind the professors' table, the largest banner of all bore the Hogwarts crest: lion, eagle, badger, and snake joined around a large letter H.

Ivan, Harry, Ron, Hermione, Hermione, Colin and Ginny looked around and sat down at the Gryffindor table.

Next to them, Fred and George were, once again and unusually, sitting apart from everyone else and conversing quietly.

Ludo Bagman avoided them, and the letters the twins had written to him long ago were returned intact.

"It's a nuisance, no doubt." George was saying grimly to Fred. "But if he doesn't want to talk to us in person, we'll have to send him the letter after all. Or we'll shove it in his hand. He can't avoid us forever."

"Who's avoiding you?" Ron said curiously, and he came over and sat down next to them.

"No one, I wish they would," Fred said, looking irritated at the interruption.

"What's a bummer?" asked Ron to George.

"Having a meddling jerk like you as a brother," replied George.
