I look at the distance from the wall, one of the world's wonders, according to the Maester in the Citadel. The Wall, the Ice Wall, is the massive wall made of mostly ice that separates the North and the Wildland beyond.
"What is in front of you is where the wildling lived."
I nod my head at Lord Stark's explanation.
While in the north, I decided to visit the famous landmark of the north, the Wall. Lord Stark decided to accompany me on my visit to the Wall. As a gift for accepting me, I give the Lord Commander of the Black a few tons' worths of food.
It sounds like much to the people down south, but to the people in the north, it was like the gods came and helped them survive another day.
"How big is the land in the distance?"
"It was as big as the north."
"That is a lot of land."
"Aye. However, most of them did not have any humans living there."
"Because of the weather?"
"Aye. There is a reason why that part of the north is called the land that always snows. Because it snows all day every year."
"It never stops?"
"No. It never stops."
That is weird. Some places on Earth always snow, but even then, it was not as big as this. It was like that part of the world always had a snowstorm.
I look to the sky and frown a little. As I release my mana, I can feel some wild mana in the air coming from the distance. But, no. It was not wild mana. Instead, someone controlled it but did not have enough control and could only roughly control it in mass.
I can also feel that its control cannot run past the wall. That is interesting.
I touch the surface of the wall and feel something from the inside of the wall. It is like a pulse pumping mana through the wall. I follow the line of mana and see a massive symbol hidden beneath the ice.
Runic magic. I was not the first person who used Runic magic. However, the language is different. If I use the Runic letter that symbolizes specific words like Heat, Dirt, or even Breeze, this Runic letter symbolizes more general words.
I theorize a symbol of Fire, Wind, and Water inside this runic circle.
The fire and wind are the only ones still alive after a long time. It looks like the fuel of the wall is almost depleted.
The Fire and Wind is the one preventing whatever mana is controlling this weather from getting past the wall. This is the reason why the north did not become an infinite tundra. The fire is the one weakening the influence of the incoming attack, while the wind is the one redirecting the wind that is coming.
As for the water… I follow the line and see that it goes to Castle Black underneath the wall.
"Lord Stark, does Castle Black have or had running warm water before?"
"How do you know? Yes, in the past Castle Black had running warm water going through its wall to make the people inside warm."
"Why did it not work any longer?"
"Because the hot spring underneath the Castle Black has dried up from the constant harsh winter."
"I see."
Now, I know what the function of the Water symbol is. There are many symbols I did not know, but I know the general function of the symbol next to me. Unfortunately, I was wrong the first time. It has the side effect of blocking the incoming attack from the north, but its main function is ensuring Castle Black is alive.
However, because the Water Rune is gone, the other two decide to focus on the other function.
I touch the runic circle underneath me and start feeding them some mana.
"Urgh."
"King Viserys! What happened?!"
I ignore him and continue to feed the wall with my mana. After a few minutes of sucking my mana, I can see the water symbol glow. I can see steam coming out from the castle black.
Bloody hell. It takes me a third of my full reserve to feed this single Runic Circle. Whoever made this made sure that it would last for hundreds or maybe thousands of years if not get fed by mana.
To ensure it will not get back to this, I need to search for the auto feeder rune that lets the mana in the air to fuel the runic formation. However, with this wall this big, finding the right runic formation will take days.
I don't have enough time and reason to fix this mess.
"King Viserys, what have you done?"
"I restored the original runic magic on the wall. With this runic magic restored, Castle Black should have warm water for the next… three hundred years, maybe more."
"M-Magic?"
"What? You are a northerner and not a southerner. The north is filled with magic and even your castle is being built and functions because of magic. Where do you think that hot spring comes from? The north did not have any volcanoes around, hot springs will not appear if there is not a single volcano around."
Of course, hot springs can appear without any volcanic activity, but I have feeling magic is involved in this matter.
"There is a lot of magic flying around Winterfell. The very foundation of your family is being built on magic."
"Magic, huh?"
I can see him look at the Black Castle for a few seconds before sighing.
"I know about magic and how my family used it in the past but I never thought that it was this big."
"Your entire family has magic."
"Truly?"
"Aye. Well, except your wife. Sadly did not have magic inside of her."
"I see."
We stood there for a long time before I decided to offer him something.
"Do you want me to teach your children how to use magic?"
"Pardon me?"
"As we are soon to be an ally, I want to offer your children a chance to learn under our healer and doctor. Unlike the citadel, I will not force your children to give up their title as an heir."
I can see him thinking about it for a few seconds before nodding his head.
"I will talk to my wife first."
"Of course. I will wait for your answer. We will stay for another week."
"Thank you. Shall we continue?"
"Sure"
Lord Stark and I continue our exploration of the wall.
