On unsteady limbs, I shuffle my weight over to the living room window, sucking in lungfuls of air through gritted teeth despite only travelling a short distance.

Back in high school, I had always envied the other kids who broke their leg cheerleading or playing football. It always seemed so cool to glide around the hallways on crutches. They would receive a free pass to use the staff elevators and skip out of PE.

But the reality was it sucked. I had only been using the crutches for a day, and already my hands were blistered and aching. My lack of upper body strength and balance made moving even a few meters a challenge of endurance and skill. Carrying anything out of arms reaching was downright impossible. And If I drop something? It might as well have fallen through a portal to hell, which made looking after poppy downright joyful. How Sam thought it was a good idea to leave me alone with a baby was beyond me.
