...I swear, when this is all over and I get back home I will block my mother's number...
I promised myself while sitting timidly in between the people I didn't actually know, in the middle of the wild forest, at night.
From what I've managed to overhear from the conversation going on, everyone around me was from the same company, or so it seemed, but for whatever reason, they were calling it a pack, also, during this company party, they were separated into the singles and mates groups – with all the ones with mates casually enjoying the food and drinks on one side while the singles were going wild – with one dark-skinned lady leading them, being the center of attention.
There weren't that many women in the singles group too so that one was all the more prominent.
And there was the thing about the reason for the party...
Apparently, it was all so that someone called Lucian was supposed to pick his Luna – whatever that was supposed to mean, though, from the sounds of it, it would probably mean his mate...
Yeah...
Do I even need to say that I want out?
If I wasn't too scared to open my mouth, maybe I would even explain that I got there by accident – but seeing how everyone just assumed that I was one of them, it wasn't that difficult to imagine that they did so because no outsiders were allowed to be there...
I don't want to get in trouble and in that situation...
Well...
When in Rome... stay put and shut up until it will be safe to leave – or however the saying goes.
Either way, I just picked up one of the grilled skewers Cindy put on my plate and started nibbling on it, using that as a reason for not talking to anyone.
But then...
He appeared.
It seemed like I noticed him first – a tall man came into the light cast by the bonfire from the opposite direction than I did.
He had short, black hair and his eyes were so ridiculously green that they as well might have been emeralds surrounded by thick eyelashes, he had a shapely nose, strong chin, and ridiculously full lips for a guy.
For whatever reason, I simply couldn't pull my eyes away from him and my face turned hot.
When he showed up he was wearing a full suit and an emerald tie matching his eyes but soon he took off the jacket – revealing a white shirt... or rather the white shirt that was about to burst because of all the bulging muscles working underneath.
The man smirked looking at the noisy bunch – which caused my heart to skip a beat - and shook his head while taking off the tie and cast it aside.
I couldn't help but think that I have seen him somewhere before...
"Ah! Lucian!"
That was the moment that the dark-skinned woman, Selene, with seemingly boundless alcohol tolerance noticed him too and called out – somehow being loud enough to be heard over the music playing from the loudspeakers surrounding the tables from four sides.
"Lucian!"
"Yeah! The Alpha arrives!"
Other cheers were raised from the rest of the gathered people and someone was sensible enough to turn the music down.
"Greetings, ladies and gentlemen! Before we start the proper celebration I have some joyous news to share!"
The man called Lucian raised his hand and greeted everyone with a benevolent smile.
"A little under an hour ago I have signed an agreement with the shiny bloodsuckers – and they will indeed forfeit from the southern territory! We did it! Our Latin-American brethren will no longer need to worry about their territory being endangered because of the human greed!"
"OOOOOOUUUUUU!"
"...!"
His words were followed by a deafening cheer of every single person other than me – because, well, truth to be told I almost had a heart attack when even Cindy and Jeff beside me roared out in delight and raised their glasses in a toast.
...I was stunned and scared, but I still couldn't look away from the man in the center of the attention walking to the tables and taking a beer bottle offered to him by Selene.
"That said, tonight we gathered here for a different occasion!"
He said opening the drink with his teeth and spewing the bottle cap to the side.
"As per agreement with our previous leader, my father, since I haven't met my fated mate until the fifth full moon of the year I reached twenty-seven years of age – since a real pack should not exist with an Alpha without his Luna – the Luna will be chosen from the willing single ladies of our pack! Tonight!"
"OOOOUUUU!"
He was like a showman, winding up the crowd that cheered whenever he paused to take a beath, walking back and forth, all eyes on him, including mine.
His looks, his voice, his charisma... everything seemed to be pulling me towards him and my heart was beating faster just by looking in his direction.
Honestly, I even stopped paying attention to the meaning of the words he was speaking and just let myself be drowned in his voice.
Well...
I didn't completely stop paying attention...
But the thing I took from his speech was... he is single, and looking for a partner...
For just a split second I imagined myself embraced by his strong arms – and instantly felt my body heating up – I covered my face with my hands to hide how red my cheeks have become, but thankfully no one really paid any attention to me...
No, everyone was focused on him.
"I must admit that I feel a bit melancholic that I won't be able to experience the bittersweet magic of the fated bond, but I will pledge myself to the one woman that will stand victorious, under the blessing of the moon goddess! For our pack! For our family!"
"FOR OUR PACK! FOR OUR FAMILY!"
Lucian called out and everyone chanted after him.
"Let the real celebration - COMMENCE!"
He roared, downed his drink in one gulp, throwing the bottle to the side, and tore off his shirt to the sound of the breaking glass.
Before I realized what was happening, his body enlarged and he grew thick black fur all over his muscles, his handsome face elongated until it turned into a giant wolf's head with terrifyingly sharp white fangs!
The next moment instead of a man, a massive bipedal wolf raised its head and howled towards the moon.
As I watch that, speechless, the sound of clothes getting ripped apart surrounded me, when I looked to my left – a humanoid wolf with platinum fur was sitting on Cindy's seat, joining the howl...
...and even that wasn't the end...
Each and every person beside me turned into a monster and their voices joined into the choir of a monstrous, primal might.
"..."
Yeah... now that I think about it... this all makes sense...
The pack... the alpha...
Those people...
Like in the legends... and books...
They were all...
They are all...
"...werewolves..."
I muttered to myself cowering in fear on my seat, prying to every single higher power I could think of to somehow make me turn invisible and not be noticed by the beasts around me.
"Hey, come on, don't be shy. Join in."
The werewolf with the platinum fur that was supposed to be Cindy nudged me to the side instantly proving that no one was listening to my desperate prayers.
"Hey! I know her! That girl is a human that applied to work for our company but didn't show up to the job interview!"
A huge hazelnut-brown werewolf called out in the voice of Selene and pointed at me with its clawed finger.
"How the hell did you get here?!"
The werewolf roared furiously, baring its fangs...
...yeah...
…I'm dead...
