Mercy Hall

The thump of Mercy's hearts roar in her head.

A cliff, she thinks to herself, I almost stepped off a cliff.

She drags her gaze away from Ambrose and calls on her inner beast.

Thirty-five feet below, water rushes into the chamber. The white, frothy liquid flows like a single organism bent on consuming anything in its path.

"How are the two cavities connected?" A shiver shakes her body. "The one we left and this one?"

"Through tunnels and cracks woven within the walls." He drags her with him.

"The water? How does it travel? I mean, through the walls?"

He laces his fingers with hers. "When the surface level reaches the fissures and eroded cracks, it'll spill over, flooding the space below."

"How does it drain?"

Ambrose releases her. The loss of his body warmth leaves an emptiness deep inside her bones.
