For the rest of the trip I stopped bothering Fillia. If she starts trying to fight me and I have to move quickly I may slip up and reveal myself making things a lot harder. So I followed them at a distance trying my best to stay off the ground to avoid discovery. Then I began to see it.
After half a year of running around in that forest I finally began to see the end of it. The light filtered through leaves at the edge of the forest as we came out. I nearly shouted out for joy as I looked upon the town we had reached. The river ran through the middle with several water wheels being attached to granaries. Many of the buildings were low to the ground with only a few having tiled roofs. There were three large buildings near the town centre with one being a church, the other being some kind of governmental office and the final one being something I didn't recognize.
High walls surrounded the city with the only openings being for the river and a large gate. Patrols of spearmen walked up and down the walls like ants crawling upon a decrepit corpse. Amusing but in the end they were just more small-fry.
Fillia stopped and turned around, obviously looking for me. Her eyes shifted to vertical slits as she searched for me.
I was going to ignore her but why not mess with her one last time? We already reached the city so to be honest even if I was revealed to the world that would be okay.
So I de-cloaked my arm and waved. Her jaw dropped as she stared at my floating waving arm which then promptly disappeared.
She then shifted her eyes back, turned around and walked away. I laughed as I watched the shocked woman walk away. This was simply too good. My entertainment had been top quality recently.
Instead of trying to go in through the gate I would wait. I could try to follow the party in but there's no point. I would likely get caught due to the distance issue. I will just jump the wall at night and then investigate the town before trying to find a way to self employ.
Now why do I want to self employ and not just find a random job? I need money but I don't want the subservience and rules that come with working under someone. I also won't be like those stupid shits in light novels who blatantly introduce modern tech to the world.
It has its own charm and should develop on its own. It's not up to me to make this place Star Trek. With all that in mind I waited for nightfall in the embrace of a tree's branches. Thus I slumbered off as the sun slowly crawled across the sky.
...
I awoke slowly, careful not to jump myself out of the tree. I slowly slid down and looked around. The light of the world's three moons shone on the path to the city. Bonfires lit up the wall's watchtowers. I rushed forth fully cloaked in darkness, my form beautifully concealed by pure dark element. I ran and leapt over the near 20 feet walls and landed on the other side, my wind element making it so I did nothing more than swirl the dirt. So began my adventure in Elden town.
I spent the night walking around town investigating the layout and doing some checking around looking into inn's and such. I found that the town was made up of 4 districts. The governmental district, the residential district, the religious district and the business district. Anything from mercenary guilds to pottery shops could be found in the business district, although I would need more time before I could fully understand the place. However I found I could read anything as I had the damage core translating for me and I could already understand most of the speech. The religious district was weird as I kept feeling odd pulls toward the church which made me leave immediately. My intuition said that I would likely be put on the spot if I went there. The residential district on the other hand was split into the slums and the middle class streets. Neither interested me but I memorized their layout just in case. The governmental district I couldn't bother with. There were rich people's buildings and that was it.
In the end I simply decided that eavesdropping in the morning for info would be good. I would also search for some quick change that I could use to rent an inn room. Thus I ended my investigation of the city.
…
In the morning I decided to go to the adventurers guild, a place where people put in requests for tasks to be completed. Why was I going? To become an adventurer? No. Adventurers at a moment's notice could become slaves if an emergency request is put out and they have their personal information taken and recorded. I would let neither happen to me. Instead what I came for was information. In my concealed form I gained a lot of information simply from sitting in a corner.
First, the guild had a library, this was a big win for someone like me who at most knows jack**** about the world besides the creation story and its races. The second being guild regulations and protocol. First off after registering adventurers have their info recorded once a week to observe their growth and are assigned a rank from F-A. There are whispers of S rank but it seems to be some kind of trap for the kingdom to find powerhouses and lock them down. I instead focused on the recruitment process. If you didn't choose to join the guild you could still do requests, which was the most important thing to me. The catch was heavy though. If you took the request anyone from the guild could take it from you at anytime. They reduced the rewards keeping the 15% and also offered no form of protections. In return you could choose any request below A rank without any problems. A small but significant advantage.
So I began to plan my way around acting as a guild volunteer. It had a lot of downsides but having no true connection to any government organization makes a huge difference.
Thus I deemed the sacrifices acceptable.
...
So I decided to take my first request the next morning, sleeping and eating in a nearby tree. I walked in half de-cloaked. The merits of doing so? I was now not invisible but really inconspicuous even if I was 6'9 (6'5 out of armor 6'7 without horns) . There was no reason to look at me as focusing on me was difficult.
I walked up to the front desk looking at the request board behind him. Apparently B class quest would be something on the level of the bear I beat, while A would be the lizard. I looked around before settling on hunting down and defeating a wolf pack leader. It was something I was more than capable of. I knocked on the desk causing the receptionist to jump and look up. he pushed up his glasses and looked up from his book.
I decloaked slightly more and looked down at his seated hunched over form.
"How c-can I help you t-today" {Receptionist}
"I would like to take the wolf request" {Astaros}
He looked at me incredulously then looked closer seeing that I was wearing armor.
"Are you s-sure" {Receptionist}
"Yes" {Astaros}
'seriously just give me the request man I could probably wipe out the whole guild on my own'
"Can I-I have your g-guild card" {Receptionist}
"I will be taking this request as a guild volunteer." {Astaros}
He paled further. He then turned around and gave me small sphere. When the request was complete it would turn green.
I took it and left walking out of the guild. Time to make some bank.
