“Are you all right, boy?” Bull asked, trying the familiar to get him to stop shaking.
“No, but I will be. Will you take me home today? We can pick up Mischief and I can be home by noon.” Jamie looked up, pleading with Bull. Bear slipped away into the courtroom.
“The judge is still in chambers. He could decide not to indict him.” Bull was desperate. He’d decided while holding Jamie’s head last night that he wanted this boy but he felt like he had blown his chance.
“He’ll indict him,” Jamie said.
Bear came out of the courtroom and interrupted. “The prosecutor was looking for you. You can take Jamie home to his house. The prosecutor said the judge took only ten minutes to bring down an indictment. He was remanded to custody; he will probably cop a plea as soon as he and his lawyer discuss Jamie’s testimony. If it goes to trial, Jamie will have to testify, but after his statement to the judge this morning I doubt it will get that far.”
