“You had to know it wasn’t her. She went along with everything he said. For Christ’s sake, she was dying of cancer, and she didn’t divorce him or try for child support or alimony. It wasn’t hard to find him. Carlo did it in four days.”

“And Carlo is…” Gray’s grandfather asked.

“Carlo Del Monte, my cousin, who is a partner in Del Monte and Cohen of Princeton and now Eatontown.”

The older man had a speculative look on his face. “That would make you Enzo Del Monte, the engineer who founded EDA. I may be semi-retired, but I keep up. You’re on the hospital board. Where would my grandson have met you?”

“I told you, Grandfather, I work at the Sunset Club, an upscale gay bar in Asbury Park. They had a terrific insurance policy for their employees and their dependents. I waited on a list for six months to get a job there. Before I took my leave of absence, I was promoted to manager.”
