Out from an interior pocket, Yuuki produced a half-consumed chocolate bar with the packaging folded over. Spoils from a gas station on their way here. She offered it to Ken. “Hungry?” she asked in a soft voice. “It’s been like six hours since we had anything to eat.”

Ken had no appetite. She hadn’t had one during the entire trip, despite eating regular meals out of necessity. But she did feel a little weak. Accepting the gift, Ken pealed back the foil and took a bite. “You’re a pretty good assistant,” she said eventually. “At least with stuff like this. Time comes for the killing, I dunno. You think you’re up to it? This isn’t like movies or TV. Real people get hurt and die. Even if we come out on top. If we find the bad guy, I’m gonna waste him.”
