“No, I don’t. But I, I…” Carlos knew he was trapped. He had to come clean, regardless if he wanted to or not.

“Babe, please, you need to tell me.”

“I did see Mami again. At the creek. Her reflection was in the water. She didn’t say anything this time, but it was clear she was worried about something. I know this sounds crazy, but this feels real to me. I wasn’t stressed. I was happy. I was happy to be there with you. I was happy that we were together and we were alone. I didn’t think about anything else. So the doctor can’t be right. He just can’t. I don’t know what to do though. I can’t tell Beto. He’ll send me away somewhere, and then we’ll lose this all. Please don’t tell him until I figure this out. Please.”

Eugenio was hesitant to respond. He wanted to say yes, but he also was afraid that Carlos could be slipping again, the way he had when he was a kid. He didn’t want to see that. He cared too much for him.
