“What if something goes wrong up there?”

“It’ll be fine, Elsie. It’ll be beautiful.” Davinder had educated himself on solar power, plants, herbs, cooking and preserving goods, and he’d read every book he could find on alternative living. This idea had kept him sane and focused, and when he’d finally decided he would make it happen—he would live independently and self-sufficiently—he’d crushed out his last cigarette.

“And he wants to live there with you? He’s a hundred percent sure?”

“Yes.”

“And you want to live there with him?”

When he’d explained all this to me, I’d laughed a little. Did he really think he could show up again and convince me to leave my house, my friends, my whole life just because he believed it was “what we were meant to do”?

But Davinder had looked at me with those intelligent dark eyes of his and had said, simply, “Yes, Allan. We’ll be so happy there.”
