“What am I gonna do? You’re gonna leave me? What am I supposed to do? I’m supposed to just go back to my life and forget you?” He reached out and skimmed his thumb along my mouth. “How am I gonna do that, Allan?”

“Don’t do that,” I said, pushing his hand away gently. “Help me.”

“Help you what? Help you leave me?”

“Yes! You owe me that much.”

He stared at me for a long time and nodded. “I felt it, you know. In the last month, I could feel it. I knew you would eventually get sick of this.”

“You know it’s the right thing to do. I have nothing here anymore. My life is going nowhere. I want to move and give myself another chance. I don’t know how I’ll do it, Davinder. I don’t know if I’ll even be able to, but I want to try.” I couldn’t help taking his hand. “Will you let me try?”

His face contorted as he held back from crying. “Goddamnit,” he said, pulling me into his arms. “It hurts.”
